For Dior’s Fall 2024 Women’s show, fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri drew inspiration from New York and Paris, creating a collection that fuses femininity with boyish allure. To complement the look, Peter Philips, the French fashion house’s creative and image director for Dior Makeup, combined bare faces with soft, romantic bitten lips, a trend that's sure to take center stage this season.
The two-toned lip stain is a departure from the popular lip gloss trend that has been at the forefront of beauty for multiple seasons, and according to Philips, it's a look that isn't some flash-in-the-pan beauty craze. “A bitten lip depicts a strong woman with a mix of femininity and masculinity,” says Philips. “It’s a style that looks like you've been drinking red wine. It’s raw. It's classic. It’s powerful.”

Philips mastered the “leftover makeup” look by using a combination of two shades: Rouge Dior Forever Lipstick in 670, a pinky-nude color, and topped it with Rouge Dior Forever Lipstick in 111, a darker berry shade. After applying both colors, Philips blended the tints with a lip brush or, in some cases, a Q-tip to smooth the lines. The lip stain is also a slight variation from the fashion brand’s previous season, which showcased a deep, dark lip that defined the rims of the model's mouth.
Lips aside, the bare face perfectly accompanied the controlled waves styled by celebrity hairstylist Guido Palau. The world-renowned stylist described the look as ‘40s glamour, with a nod to old Hollywood. “There’s just something so beautiful about that era,” he said while explaining the assortment of deep waves, side parts, and perfectly coiffed braids.
When discussing the future, Philips is still determining how long the bitten lip trend will last, but he's confident it's for the Dior woman. “When I started with Dior 10 years ago, I wanted to figure out who the Dior girl was,” says Philips. “The brand is constantly growing and evolving, but in every Dior era, she’s always a strong person, and this lip reflects that. She likes to experiment. Don’t mess with her.”
