I am ghostly pale. Some may even call me translucent. That being said, faking a tan is tricky business. Spray tans and self-tanners look, well, glaringly fake. And I try to keep my face out of the sun as much as possible, which pretty much takes a natural tan off the table (because skin cancer doesn't look good on anyone). All of that means I have become really good at knowing which bronzer formulas are ideal for fair skin.

They can't be too orange or red in their undertone—a cool or neutral base is often the best bet. But even products that look good in the pot can sometimes oxidize halfway through the day and turn a funky brown shade. But there are a few formulas out there that are really like Goldilocks for fair skin. They leave me looking, well, not tan per se, but subtly sunkissed. A light dusting (or blending if I'm using a cream formula) gives me a healthy glow and imparts just enough color to my face that you might think I spent a weekend lounging on the beach in the French Riviera.

I'm fortunate to have dozens of bronzer formulas at my disposal, so I set off on a testing mission. Over the past few years, I've swatched and blended over 50 different bronzers from brands like Dior, Chanel, and Physician's Formula. Here, you'll find my definitive guide to the 11 best bronzers for fair skin—an assortment of creams, liquids, and powders that will give even the lightest skin tones a subtle glow and ample cheekbone definition without the chalky, ruddy oxidation.

I always recommend this formula to makeup beginners or anyone who likes to do a full face in under five minutes. The formula is incredibly forgiving—no matter what tool you use, you won't be left looking streaky or patchy; it sinks into the skin instantly and provides a bronze that never runs too warm. I wear the lightest shade year-round, but if you wanted to double down on a tan, you could get away with the shade Clay.

    Finish: Natural

    Texture: Cream

    Shades: 6

What I Love: Creamy; Easy to Blend

What I Don't: Definitely better for cool/neutral undertones than olive

Review for MC: "I've been using this since it launched, which is the biggest sign I'm obsessed with a product. I tap into the formula with my Makeup by Mario brush and the pigment naturally finds the hollow of my cheek. I never worry about looking orange or applying to much—it's dummy proof." — Samantha Holender, Senior Beauty Editor

The Sun Tone Bronzing Crème is designed to mimic the way that the sun hits the skin. With two shades in each—and four duos total—you’re able to sculpt and add definition with the darker shade and create all-over warmth and diffusion on your face with the lighter shade. “The secret to an authentic tan is never just one shade—it’s an expert balance of warmth and depth,” Gucci Westman previously told MC. “This duo gives you both: the range to build real dimension and the control to make it look totally natural.”

    Finish: Natural

    Texture: Cream

    Shades: 4

What I Love: Bronzer and contour in one product; Offers cool and warm-toned shades

What I Don't: They could benefit from one even lighter shade for very pale skin tones

Review for MC: "Honestly, the formula is so creamy and easy to use that you can’t really mess it up, but there is a bit of strategy here. Don’t just muddy the two colors together. Instead, start with the darker shade in the duo and define and sculpt the areas you want to lift—almost like you would use a contour. Then, I use the lighter shade in the compact to diffuse any harsh lines and give my skin a healthy tan." — Samantha Holender, Senior Beauty Editor

While I personally endorse every bronzer on this list, I always go back to the Dior Forever Natural Bronze. The micro-fine powder never applies with streaks, and the pigment doesn't oxidize throughout the day, meaning the color is the same in the morning as it is at night. As the name indicates, it gives my skin a healthy glow minus any unwanted orange tones.

    Finish: Matte

    Texture: Pressed powder

    Shades: 7

What I Love: Has shades for all undertones; Chic packaging

What I Don't: Not the most pigmented option

Review for MC: "I love the way this bronzer really brings my makeup together. I lightly dust it across my cheeks, temples, and just below the chin to add some color and dimension back to my face. It's a subtle step that makes a huge difference." — Danielle Cohen, Contributing Beauty Writer

    Softsculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer

    $34 AT SEPHORA

This bronzer is one of Mario's best innovations. The balm is virtually weightless and can be used on bare skin and over powders and liquids to warm, shape, and even out skin tone. The coverage is perfection—light enough to make it mistake-proof while gloriously buildable. It's my go-to finishing touch for every look, whether I'm rocking full glam or just throwing on some SPF before running out the door.

    Finish: Radiant

    Texture: Balm/cream

    Shades: 6

What I Love: Blendable, sheer natural coverage; User-friendly

What I Don't: A lot of users fail to fully understand the product due to the misleading name

Review for MC: "This might be my favorite Makeup by Mario product—everyone should have it in their makeup kit. The creamy formula blends into the skin like butter and leaves behind a sheer wash of glowy, tan goodness." — Danielle Cohen, Contributing Beauty Writer

Every ounce of hype you've heard about this formula is well deserved. It provides the perfect glow, while sculpting and defining contours with ease (you really don't have to be a pro to ace this application). It's one of the only bronzers I've found that stays on all day and doesn't pill, which is probably why it's one of Marie Claire Beauty Director Hannah Baxter’s favorites.

    Finish: Natural

    Texture: Cream

    Shades: 6

What I Love: Comes in a large pot and will last a long time; Editor-approved

What I Don't: Wish there were a few more shades; Pot can get dirty

Review for MC: “This guy has a steady presence in my routine—I always go back to it. It blends with such ease and the undertone match on my cool, pink-y skin is perfect.” — Samantha Holender, Senior Beauty Editor

You'll find this bronzer in every pro's kit—it's incredibly versatile and perfectly complements fair, warm-toned skin. Use it on your face and your eyes for a monochromatic makeup look. It has a slight golden shimmer that looks healthy, not glittery or sparkly.

    Finish: Radiant

    Texture: Pressed powder

    Shades: 8

What I Love: Editor-approved; Pigmented; Blends easily; Has a healthy glow; Top-rated at Sephora

What I Don't: Some reviewers say the powder cracks easily

Customer Review: I’ve used Too Faced, Anastasia Bev Hills, and Haus Labs bronzers, and unexpectedly, this NARS one is my favorite! It looks cool-toned (not orangey) on my pale skin and blends really easily. You get a lot of product, and an extra plus is that the packaging is cute and durable. I would recommend trying!" — Sephora

Best Glowy Bronzer for Fair Skin

Filmstar Bronze amp;amp; Glow Contour Duo

    Charlotte Tilbury
    Filmstar Bronze Glow Contour Duo
    $29
    $68 AT NORDSTROM

Fellow fair-skinned girl and actress Sydney Sweeney keeps this bronzer-highlighter duo in her makeup bag at all times. She'll whip it out for a "soft glam" look, dusting the shades on her cheekbones, eyes, and chest. It is the ideal color combo for warm-toned fair skin with both shades having a golden base—and a hint of sparkle.

    Finish: Radiant

    Texture: Pressed Powder

    Shades: 2

What I Love: Great for photography; Blends easily

What I Don't: Some reviewers say it doesn't last for a long time

Customer Review: "For having such fair skin, I was unsure how this product would work for me. I was surprised how easy it was to apply, it’s buildable and looks great on the skin. The sculpt powder gives a nice lift to the cheeks, and the highlighter is great for the high points of the face. Would recommend." — Nordstrom

The two lightest shades in this range, Aura and Lunar, work extremely well on fair skin. I love to wear Lunar all over the face in the winter for a healthy flush, whereas Aura is great for sweeping across my eyelids and on my cheekbones for a bronzy look in the summer. The formula is a powder, but it won't look cakey on dry skin because it's so finely milled.

    Finish: Matte

    Texture: Pressed Powder

    Shades: 8

What I Love: Editor-approved; Very blendable; Has a very lightweight formula; Great for dry skin; You can buy a refill instead of buying the case again

What I Don't: Has a matte finish, so it won't give you a glow

Customer Review: "Love the shade for my fair neutral skin! It’s more of a red undertone, so it doesn’t look orange by any means while still adding warmth. It applies and blends seamlessly. By far the best powder bronzer I’ve ever used. Packaging is so sleek and easy to use." — Make Beauty

Best Neutral Bronzer for Fair Skin

Major Sculpt Cramp;egrave;me Contour amp;amp; Powder Bronzer Duo

    Patrick Ta
Major Sculpt Crème Contour Powder Bronzer Duo
    $42
    $42 AT SEPHORA

You don't have to pick between a cream or powder formula anymore, thanks to Patrick Ta's Major Sculpt Duo. With a soft, bronzing powder and a more pigmented cream (technically meant for contouring, though it works as a bronzer just as well), the palette allows customizable results that blend with ease. The shades offer the perfect neutral undertone for every skin tone—never leaning too orange or too muddy.

    Finish: Natural

    Texture: Cream/powder

    Shades: 5

    What I Love: Multi-use; Neutral undertones; Travel-friendly

What I Don't: Some users complain the pigment payoff isn't great

Customer Review: "Simply just yes. This product is so so good! I personally have very fair skin and this gives me such a natural bronzed look as well as a sharp sculpted one. It stays all day and I could not recommend this product enough. If you’re looking for a good bronzer or contour I definitely recommend this one!" — Sephora

The Best Liquid Bronzer for Fair Skin

Bronze amp;amp; Protect Spf 50+ Bronzing Concentrate

    Ciele
Bronze Protect SPF 50+ Bronzing Concentrate
    $36
    $36 AT SEPHORA

I take pride in staying out of the sun, but occasionally, I wish I had a hint of that sun-kissed look. When the urge for a post-vacation glow is particularly strong, I mix a few drops of this bronzing concentrate in with my moisturizer. It gives my entire complexion a subtle bronze, and because I'm rubbing it all over, I never worry about streaks or uneven application. Keep in mind it's a concentrate: Less is more.

    Finish: Radiant

    Texture: Liquid gel

    Shades: 2

What I Love: Has SPF and skincare benefits; A little goes a long way; Acne-safe formula

What I Don't: Easy to overdo it with the concentrated formula

Customer Review: "Love these bronzing drops! Probably my favorite I’ve tried yet, and I’ve been experimenting with a few! Even if the price is a little higher, the value is worth it because these drops are so pigmented. Perfect for adding to moisturizer or foundation! Highly recommend." — Sephora

Best Warm-Toned Bronzer for Fair Skin

    Sun-Kissed Glow Powder Bronzer

    Gucci
    Sun-Kissed Glow Powder Bronzer
    $65
    $65 AT SEPHORA

Powder bronzers are normally not for me. My skin can get dry—especially during the winter, when I need a heavy dose of fake bronze color. But with a mix of hyaluronic acid and shea butter infused into this very chic compact, this Gucci bronzer never leaves my skin parched; it's both hydrating and blurring. I always dust a bit extra on my nose to give my pores an airbrushed look.

    Finish: Natural

    Texture: Pressed Powder

    Shades: 5

What I Love: Lasts incredibly long on the skin—especially when paired with a cream product underneath; Blurs pores and fine lines in addition to providing warmth

What I Don't: A powder formula can look cakey, so make sure you're using the right brush and tap off excess product before applying it to the skin

Customer Review: "The Gucci bronzer, Poudre de Beauté Éclat Soleil Powder, is a wonderful bronzer. I have it in Shade 01, which is the lightest shade they have. This bronzer applies smoothly to your skin and looks very natural. It is super easy to blend and add to your routine, especially if you want to add some dimension to your face." — Sephora

How Do I Find the Best Bronzer Shade for Fair Skin?

Pale skin tones should always look to the lightest available shades for their choice of bronzer. “Generally speaking, your bronzer color should be one to two shades darker than your surface tone (or skin tone),” makeup artist Priscilla Ono explains. You'll also want to consider your undertones. Brands typically group their shade ranges and undertones together, so finding one that works is easy.

If you’re not sure of your undertone, Ono recommends looking at the veins in your arm. "If they are blueish, you have a cool undertone; if they are greener, you’re warmer; and if you can’t really determine which shade you are, you’re more likely a neutral undertone,” she adds.

What Bronzer Formula Should I Use?

Powder, cream, and liquid formulas are at your disposal with fair skin, so it really depends on the finish you're looking for. "Liquid bronzers can be mixed into foundation for a subtle amp up on warmth and will dry down, while cream bronzers can stay looking dewy and blend into skin seamlessly for an effortless look," explains celebrity makeup artist Judi Gabbay Braha. On the other hand, powder bronzers are available in luminous and matte formulas, which can be great for oily skin types.

How Do I Apply Bronzer to Fair Skin?

With fair skin, less is always more. "Apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit—the forehead, tip of the nose, chin, and cheekbones," says Braha. If you're using a brush, make sure to tap off excess product. Place the product on the back of your hand first if you're using a cream. Building bronzer in light layers is key to looking glowy and tan, as opposed to overly orange.

    How We Tested

Our testing process merged long-time editor favorites with new discoveries. We asked the Marie Claire team to share their favorite bronzers for fair skin, and tapped professional makeup artists to learn about their top picks. From there, we used reviews and online sentiment to select our top contenders.

We evaluated each on ease of use, durability, pigment payoff, shade range, and lasting power. We also considered packaging and versatility. Our resulting pool comprised the above top picks on the market.
