If you intend to sleep in your heatless curlers, it's important to prioritize comfort. "I love the robe belt method or soft foam rods. It’s something gentle so you’re comfortable if you’re sleeping in them," says Priano. Some other tips she has for the prettiest, comfiest curls? "Wrap with tension but not too tight, and always protect the hairline. I put a soft scarf or silk wrap around the hairline so it stays smooth and laid."

When shopping the best heatless curlers, keep the type of curl you want to rock in mind. Flexi rods can be bent and twisted into various forms for a customized look, while velcro and foam rollers provide a more consistent curl, depending on the size you choose. Long rods, headbands, and the Curly Tie are a little more choose-your-own-adventure; the tighter you wrap your hair, the tighter your curls will be.

Heatless curlers may not work effectively on every hair type or haircut. If your hair is super thick, for instance, it may be more challenging for it to hold the style. If you have a layered cut, you may find it difficult to wrap all your hair in the device.
On the other hand, some (like me!) might find that heatless curlers work better on their hair than even the best curling irons. "With heatless curls, the hair has more time to set in shape, especially if you’re sleeping in them. It’s like a long, gentle molding process instead of a quick heat-and-cool moment," explains Priano. "For very resistant hair, heatless curling often gives longer-lasting body and movement."
Porsche notes that finer and smoother hair textures may respond better to these options because they don't have to contend with quick, high heat. "A hot curling iron can shape the hair quickly, but if the hair is too smooth or overly conditioned, it will relax itself just as fast unless it’s cooled properly or pinned right after," explains the expert.
How Do I Use Heatless Curlers?
Graciano suggests kicking off your styling session by priming your hair. You'll want it freshly washed (and almost dried) for best results. You'll divide it into sections starting from where you wear your part, combing each section to ensure there are no tangles before wrapping it around your heatless curler of choice.
"The larger the sections, the looser the curl will be. If you want more curls, go smaller," she explains. Then sleep, or watch a couple of movies, or do whatever else you want to do while the best heatless curlers work their magic. An overnight set always works best, but six to eight daytime hours can also be effective. Before you know it, it'll be removal time.
"If you put your heatless curlers in while your hair is damp, make sure it's completely dry before you remove them, Graciano adds. "To finish, unroll the hair and add some working product to add shine and reduce friction-caused frizz, like Goldie Locks Signature Serum."
Should My Hair Be Wet or Dry?
While researching your ideal heatless curlers, you may notice that instructions for dry versus wet use vary. Some kits promise to work fresh out of the shower, while others say your strands need to be totally dry.
The experts' take? The best place is somewhere in between. "I suggest starting with hair that’s 80 to 90 percent dry," Priano says. "If it’s too wet, the curls won’t set; too dry, and the hair won’t mold. Make sure sections are even and tension is consistent when you wrap the hair as well."
Integrating the right products will set you up for even more success. "The prep is what makes or breaks heatless curls! I would start with slightly damp hair, but not too wet. If your hair is too wet, then your curls won’t dry overnight, and your hair will fall out immediately when taking it down," agrees Porsche. "Use either the Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray or the Instant Lift Volumizing Mousse to help form the curls and add hold."

How Do I Fix Too Tight of Curls?
If your curls end up a little too curly, there are a couple of ways you can tone them down. "I suggest brushing them out gently with a wide paddle brush and adding a touch of lightweight oil like SexyHair Love Oil or shine spray on the ends," notes Priano. "You can also flip your head upside down and give it a gentle shake to let them relax into a wave."

"Ensure you comb the product through for even distribution and you don’t leave any tangles in the hair before wrapping."

For my own heatless curler testing journey, I regularly washed my hair with Honeyque's Shampoo and Conditioner to ensure weightless hydration. I also added Treecell's Recovery Essence (it's a haircare product, but the ingredient list reads like skincare!) for some extra support. There wasn't heat damage to contend with, but trying a variety of long-lasting curly styles meant numerous showers to reset and prepare for the next go-around.
When Should I Use Heatless Curlers?

"Overnight is the most popular and most effective because you can get longer-lasting curls. When you wake up, all you have to do is take your hair down and you’re ready to go," says Porsche.
"If you try heatless curls in the morning, you’ll end up with a softer curl pattern. This method is beneficial for individuals who prefer not to sleep in their curls. Also, if you want to add shape to already formed heatless curls, you can wear them for a few hours."
