Fragrance is incredibly personal. While I like to smell like a freshly baked cookie or marshmallow treat personified, you might prefer a gourmand balanced by leather, smoke, or citrus. Thankfully, 2026's roster of the best vanilla scents blends the inherently comforting fragrance family with a range of notes, ensuring there is something to suit every preference.

"Vanilla is an incredibly versatile ingredient, and there are so many fragrance compositions that can be made with it to give it a unique personality," explains Faye Harris, Co-Founder and CMO of the eco-conscious luxury fragrance brand Eauso Vert. This unique personality is part of the reason many vanilla fragrances have gone TikTok-viral over the last few years.

Fragrance influencer Olivia VanDerMillen, a.k.a. @oliviaolfactory on social media, agrees. "Vanilla fragrance can be creamy, fresh, smoky, floral, even earthy like a mushroom at times," she tells Marie Claire. "I believe there’s a vanilla for everyone." Case in point: some of the options on this list are refreshingly lightweight scents that can be worn daily. Others are long-lasting perfumes perfect for the office, not just date night.

As a vanilla loyalist with over 80 different bottles that contain the note in my collection (yes, I've counted), I'll be the first to tell you that hardly any two vanilla scents are the same. So, I made it my mission to find the best vanilla perfumes on the market. Ahead, you'll find reviews of a few of my all-time favorite scents, plus a few select from experts and fellow Marie Claire editors. Prepare to find the perfect vanilla gourmand scent to add to your fragrance collection.

If you're a vanilla lover, this perfume is for you. I like to think of this as a grown-up, more nuanced version of the sugary sweet body mists of my childhood. Right off the bat, you're hit with strong notes of vanilla, but it's perfectly balanced with slight notes of musk and amber. After a few hours, the strong scent of vanilla dies down just a bit, resulting in a warm, inviting, and luxurious scent.

Notes: Vanilla orchids; Tonka absolute; Amber woods

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: A true vanilla; Great for any occasion; Sweet but not intense; Warm amber dry down

What I Don't: Dark-tinted liquid may stain clothes

Review for MC: "This is everything I could want in a vanilla scent so I consider it one of my holy grails. It's sweet without being overpowering; nuanced while still letting vanilla shine through; and warm and cozy, yet great for any season and ocassion. It's one of the perfumes I reach for the most because it's so easy to wear and downright delicious." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor

    Vanilla Woods Eau De Parfum

    Best Woody Vanilla Perfume
    The 7 Virtues
    Vanilla Woods Eau De Parfum
    $94
    SHOP NOW

Vanilla Woods is one of the most complex fragrances in my collection. Hands down. It starts with a strong sweetness dose with base notes of Madagascar vanilla, gourmand caramel, and woody amber. Its pear and rose notes rise to the surface within minutes, resulting in an intoxicating fragrance. I can personally attest that this fragrance brings a sense of comfort and calmness whenever I wear it. If you change your perfumes with the season, I recommend this as a winter perfume, as it's warm and soothing.

Notes: Pear; Rose; Vanilla; Amber; Caramel

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: Has aromatherapy benefits; Hypoallergenic and cruelty-free; Warm, woody dry down; Great for layering

What I Don't: Not very long-wearing on skin

Review for MC: "Vanilla Woods is one of the first vanilla perfumes I added to my collection, and it holds a special place in my heart. It's one of my favorite layering fragrances as it adds a sweetness to any other scent I'm wearing without overpowering it. The warm, calming effect I feel every time I wear it makes me reach for it more often, too." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor

Vetiver amp;amp; Golden Vanilla Cologne Intense

    Best Vanilla Cologne
    Jo Malone London
Vetiver and Golden Vanilla Cologne Intense
    $160
    SHOP NOW

As VanDerMillen mentioned, vanilla can have an earthy feel, and that's certainly what you get with this Jo Malone perfume. The earthy woodiness of vetiver grounds the creamy warmth of vanilla to create an intoxicating, not-too-sweet fragrance. Adding cardamom, lavender, and sage gives it even more of a grounding feel.

Notes: Cardamom; Vetiver; Lavender; Clary sage; Vanilla bourbon

    Size: 3.4 oz.

What I Love: A true unisex fragrance; Earthy notes balance the sweetness of vanilla; Very long-lasting

What I Don't: Some may find it too masculine

Review For MC: "When I was wearing this fragrance, I had one of those rare occurrences when I actually had someone compliment my perfume out in the wild—that's how I know this is a real winner in my collection. Personally, I would find this scent irresistible on a man, but I also love wearing it myself whenever I want a little something different." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor

Poets of Berlin Eau De Parfum

    Best Fresh Vanilla Perfume
    Vilhelm Parfumerie
Poets of Berlin Eau De Parfum
    $205
    $295 AT BLOOMINGDALE'S

If you don't know of the niche fragrance house Vilhelm Parfumerie, allow Poets of Berlin, one of its most popular creations, to give you a lasting first impression. While most vanilla perfumes fall in the warm fragrance category, this one smells much more green and fresh, giving it a totally different vibe than what you're used to with vanilla fragrance. Poets of Berlin pairs vanilla with blueberry and a kick of earthiness from orris and vetiver for an elegant and distinct scent. This would make for an excellent spring perfume, and the bottle would look so gorgeous on your vanity.

Notes: Blueberry; Lemon; Vanilla; Green wild orris; Sandalwood; Vetiver

    Size: 1.7 oz

What I Love: A vanilla fragrance for those who love fresh scents; Not overly sweet; Great for daytime occasions and warm weather

What I Don't: May not be sweet enough for traditional vanilla fans

Review For MC: "As a huge vanilla fan, I had thought I'd come across every scent variation under the sun, but it was love at first sniff when I came across Poets of Berlin. It may not sound like it would work, but the combination of blueberry, vanilla, and vetiver is simply to die for. It develops into a sweeter fragrance the longer it sits on my skin, but it maintains a lush greenness that makes it a stand-out in my collection—I'm simply obsessed." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor

Eau Duelle - Eau De Parfum

    Best Unisex Vanilla Perfume
    Diptyque Paris
    Eau Duelle Eau De Parfum
    $255
    SHOP NOW

There's a reason Diptyque perfumes are so popular among editors—each and every one exudes trust-fund energy and lasts all day long. Eau Duelle is no different. As an ode to travel and vanilla, this scent combines the sugary sweetness of vanilla with spices and incense you would come across while traveling. As such, this fragrance has a subtle sweetness and warmth but is balanced with a spicy smokiness that makes it truly unisex.

Notes: Bourbon vanilla; Pink peppercorn; Cypriol; Incense

    Size: 2.5 oz.

What I Love: A true unisex fragrance; Very long-lasting; Has a comforting effect

What I Don't: May not be suitable for warmer weather

Review for MC: "Every time I spray this perfume, I feel like a cool girl. Maybe it's because of the complex, layered scent, or maybe it's because Diptyque is simply an iconic brand. With its spicy, smokey vibe, it's not something I can imagine just anybody enjoying, which is why I like it so much. As much as I love it on myself, I bet the subtle sweetness wears just as good on a man, too." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor

Torn is the perfect name for this perfume because its scent is partly feminine and partly masculine; it's the perfect genderless fragrance. Upon the initial spray, I'm immediately whisked away to a fireplace with a glass of whiskey in hand. Tom Ford
    Tobacco Vanille Eau De Parfum
    $300

I've tried my fair share of perfumes over the years, but Tom Ford perfumes are the only ones that are consistently complex, unique, and downright luxurious. One of the brand's most famous scents, Tobacco Vanille, is an acquired taste—and that is exactly why I love it. Don't be thrown off by the tobacco note; I find its smokey spiciness pairs beautifully with the vanilla and ginger. Every time I wear it, I'm transported to a rustic cabin in the woods where I'm snuggled up by the fireplace. It's warm, woody, spicy, slightly sweet, and strong. It's a true fall fragrance I plan on wearing on every cold day.

Notes: Tobacco leaf; Ginger; Tonka bean; Vanilla; Cocoa; Dry fruit accords; Sweet wood sap

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: Unique, layered scent; Very long-lasting; Sophisticated; Great for fall and winter; Unisex

What I Don't: May not be suitable for summer

Customer review: "Very good scent. I will say it does take some getting used to bc of the combination of tobacco and vanilla but after a minute of wearing it. It’s very good and strong. The packaging is also great as magnetic so the cap doesn’t just get lost. I believe it’s a great value for the money. I feel very chic when I wear it." — Neiman Marcus

Black Opium Eau De Parfum - 3.0 Oz

Best Vanilla Perfume for Special Occasions
    Yves Saint Laurent
    Black Opium Eau De Parfum
    $140
    SHOP NOW

An oldie but a goodie, YSL's Black Opium is a classic designer perfume for a reason. Coffee and florals don't exactly sound like a great pairing, but I'm here to assure you that it works. The coffee note adds a dark, seductive punch to the classic white floral notes, while warm vanilla is at the base of it all. I feel my most feminine, confident self when I'm wearing this perfume, which is why I wear it on all of my date nights and special occasions.

    Notes: Coffee; White flowers; Vanilla

    Size: 1.0 oz.

What I Love: Seductive and sexy; A cult-favorite feminine perfume; Coffee note provides uniqueness to florals; Warm, long-lasting dry down

What I Don't: May be too dark and sensual for daytime wear

Customer review: "Oh my goodness, I swear this is my all time favorite perfume. It is so intoxicating. I took one whiff and fell in love. It perfectly balances warm, sweet, floral, and spicy. It is feminine and perfect for many occasions. Overall, it is just an amazing fragrance." — Ulta

    Vanilla Skin Eau De Parfum

    Best Sweet Vanilla Perfume
    Phlur
    Vanilla Skin Eau De Parfum
    $99
    SHOP NOW

As a true vanilla fragrance lover, I'm all about candied notes, but there's a fine line between delicious and overwhelmingly sweet. Phlur's Vanilla Skin strikes the perfect balance. Notes of vanilla and sugar crystals take precedence here, but they are thoughtfully balanced with the woodiness of sandalwood and the subtle spiciness of pink peppercorn. I find it equally comforting, playful, and nostalgic—like my old favorite vanilla body sprays but all grown up.

Notes: Sugar crystals; Cashmere wood; Vanilla

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: A true vanilla scent; Woody notes balance sweetness; Great for every season; Warm, comforting dry down

What I Don't: May be cloying for some

Customer review: "Omg this smells sooooo darn good!!! I am into smoky woody vanillas and this is right up my alley! It performs exactly like the body spray but with more projection and longevity!!!! I can see myself getting a backup" — Sephora

    Vanilla Embers Eau De Parfum

    Best Floral Vanilla Perfume
    EAUSO VERT
    Vanilla Embers Eau De Parfum
    $185
    SHOP NOW

Vanilla Embers doesn't immediately scream "vanilla" like most other vanilla perfumes, which I love. Its creamy vanilla bean base note perfectly contrasts with intoxicating orangeflower, jasmine, and spicy cardamom, resulting in a floral, woody, and sweet fragrance.

Notes: Cardamom; Jasmine, Moroccan orangeflower; Sandalwood; Vanilla beam

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: Beautiful combination of sweet, woody, and floral notes; Long-lasting; Warm, comforting dry down

What I Don't: May not be sweet enough for those wanting a traditional vanilla perfume

Customer Review: "I am in love. This has such a unique vanilla tone to it. The cardamom, orange flower and upcycled turmeric gives it such a different vibe. Very hard to explain. It has a spicy, almost woody warmth to it that makes you feel so warm and cozy but still has that little oomph to lift your spirits and capture the attention of those who are close to you. Definitely one of my favorite new fragrances to date and I have quite an extensive collection of both designer and niche." — Fragrantica

    Vanilla Milk Eau De Parfum

    Best Gourmand Vanilla Perfume
    Ellis Brooklyn
    Vanilla Milk Eau De Parfum
    $115
    $115 AT ULTA

Do you know the delicious milk left in a cereal bowl? Well, that's exactly what this perfume smells like, in the best way possible. Just like the name suggests, the fragrance smells shockingly close to sweet milk. However, after it dries down and into a few hours of wear, this perfume transforms into more of a light, creamy smell reminiscent of chocolate chip cookie dough (it does have notes of cocoa shell, after all). While this scent is deliciously sweet, don't get it confused with the saccharine scents of the 2000s. Vanilla Milk is balanced and delectable thanks to a touch of florals.

Notes: Milk accord; Frangipani; Bourbon vanilla bean extract; Upcycled cocoa shell extract; Benzoin resinoid; Amyris; Sandalwood; Musk

    Size: 1.7 oz.

What I Love: More suited for those who love sweet gourmands; Long-lasting; Milk accord provides uniqueness

What I Don't: May be cloying for some

Customer review: "This is a beautiful scent, I have worn it for several days now and I have not tired of it at all. It lasts so long and has such a deep, beautiful and sexy vibe. I have been searching for so long for a special Vanilla scent and this is it!" — Ulta

Notes: Juniper berries; Vanilla bean; Cedarwood

    Size: 3.38 oz.

What I Love: Affordable; All-natural fragrance oils; Milky emulsion extends wear time; Comforting scent; Argan and jojoba oils nourish the skin

What I Don't: Some reviewers found that any notes other than vanilla fade quickly over time

Customer review: "This quickly became my favorite scent of all time, it’s so addicting! Sweet and sticky but not in a gross way, definitely a must for gourmand fans." — Sephora

What Should I Look For In Vanilla Perfume?

    • Complementary Fragrance Notes

Long gone are the days when vanilla fragrances were confectionary overloads. Harris explains that in present-day vanilla is often paired with woodsy, citrus, or spicy notes to help balance the sweetness of vanilla while still letting it shine through. Consider a vanilla fragrance that combines other favored notes for a more sophisticated take on the gourmand scent. "Citrus can add a freshness while spicy and woody notes can particularly enhance the warming and comforting aspects of vanilla," adds Harris. "Soft florals and musks can enhance the creaminess and sensuality, creating an incredibly smooth, lactonic effect."

    • Ingredients

All perfumes mainly contain water, alcohol, and perfume oils. The combination of perfume oils is what makes a fragrance unique, and the types of oils can play a huge role in the outcome of a perfume. When it comes to vanilla in fragrances, Harris explains that it can either have natural or synthetic origins depending on the fragrance's desired character. "Synthetics tend to be used to give a more sweet, addictive quality, while the natural extract brings a more animal, leathery, or spicy dimension," she says. The ingredient list can shed light on its overall sense when shopping for a vanilla perfume.

    • Concentration of Fragrance

Not all perfumes are made equal, and that's a good thing! On fragrance labels, you may run across different names, such as eau de toilette, eau de parfum, or perfume oil. The difference here is the percentage of perfume oil and its concentration, which can affect the longevity and character of the fragrance. Choosing between the three is a matter of personal preference and skin and nose sensitivity. Here, Harris breaks down the pros and cons of each type of fragrance.

    • Eau de toilettes (EDTs) typically contain five to 15 percent perfume oil and are often much lighter than eau de parfums. Harris says that since EDTS tend to be less potent and clingy on the skin, they give you the flexibility to reapply when necessary without sticking to the same scent all day.
    • Eau de parfum (EDPs) have a much higher concentration of perfume oil than EDts, at around 15 to 20 percent. "They are perfect for those seeking to express their taste in scent more outwardly, as these formulas are more concentrated and will have more longevity than an EDT," says Harris.
    • Perfume oils are also made of a high concentration of oils and natural extracts, except they don't contain alcohol and typically come in rollerball form rather than a spray. Harris says these are a great option for those sensitive to alcohol but still want to enjoy a fragrance.
