Truth be told, hair serums are pretty much the only styling product I consistently use. My hair is very dense, which is great, but it's also incredibly fine, which means anything even slightly heavy—hair creams, oils, most leave-ins—can take it from freshly washed to flat and greasy in about thirty seconds. Hair serums, on the other hand, give me the benefits without that weighed-down feeling. A drop or two through the ends adds shine, smooths frizz, and keeps it looking and feeling healthy.

That said, a hair serum isn’t really one specific product anymore. Some are purely about shine and polish—the kind you smooth over the ends after a blowout when you want a glass-like finish. Others focus on strengthening damaged strands or calming frizz throughout the day. And my latest favorites are designed to work overnight, helping support hair health while you sleep.

As celebrity hairstylist Glen Operazna explains, the right nighttime formula can quietly do a lot of heavy lifting: by morning, hair should feel “softer, healthier, smoother, and more resilient, with improved shine and manageability.” He also points out that many of these formulas now include heat protection, helping shield strands from the styling damage that tends to follow the next day.

Below are the hair serums I reach for most often—and the different roles they play in my routine.

    Night Shift

My favorite type of hair serum is designed to do its best work while you’re asleep. These overnight formulas typically lean into reparative oils, peptides, or bond-building ingredients that help support damaged strands. I like applying them from mid-lengths to ends after my nightly shower and just before bed. The formula absorbs overnight—by morning, my hair feels noticeably softer and is ready to go for the next day.

Chronologiste Overnight Youth Serum for Dry, Thin, Aging Hair

    Kérastase
    Chronologiste Overnight Youth Serum
    $65
    SHOP NOW

This brand-new serum from Kérastase is one I've been patiently awaiting. I'm already a fan of the Nutritive 8H Magic Night Hair Serum, so I had high expectations. Upon first use, I awoke to smoother, softer hair. It also appeared thicker, thanks to its ability to increase the fullness of each hair cuticle. It's also ideal for dry, mature hair, so you can trust it to deliver maximum moisture and shine.

    Sleep Masque Night Repair Serum

    R+Co Bleu
    Sleep Masque Night Repair Serum
    $120
    SHOP NOW

Once you get past the price point, this ultra-luxurious hair mask serum does wonders for your hair. Think of this one like a really rich nighttime face cream that locks in moisturizing ingredients for super-smooth skin—Sleep Masque does the same thing, except on your hair.

    Glass-Hair Finish

Nobody can deny the power of super-glossy, super-shiny hair. It's just chic and expensive-looking. These serums are all about polish, smoothing the cuticle so light reflects off the hair more evenly.

Revive Rapid Repair Bond Gloss Shine amp;amp; Damaged Hair Treatment Mask

    JVN
    Revive Rapid Repair Bond Gloss
    $36
    SHOP NOW

This serum is a bit different from the rest as it's an in-shower treatment used after shampooing and conditioning. Once you apply, leave it on for 60 seconds, then rinse it out. It treats split ends and smooths the cuticle.

Liquid Glass High-Gloss Finishing Hair Serum

    Drybar
Liquid Glass High-Gloss Finishing Hair Serum
    $32
    SHOP NOW

Anything with the name "Liquid Glass" has my attention, and apparently, numerous others, as it's a top-seller with glowing reviews. Powered by a nutrient-rich formula, this finishing serum infuses the hair with loads of hyaluronic acid for major plumping and hydration.

    Frizz Fighters

Humidity, heat styling, and sweat all leave my hair in a chaotic state that's usually hard to remedy. That's why I prevent it from happening in the first place with a hair serum that smooths and seals the cuticle. This helps control frizz and block moisture from entering the hair shaft, preventing the poof.

Milk Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner Hair Serum

    RŌZ
Milk Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner Hair Serum
    $52
    SHOP NOW

Team MC has a pretty big obsession with all things RŌZ hair care. This milky serum works for all hair types, making it a pretty universal product for banishing frizz and flyaways thanks to its hydrating power. It also makes for a great detangler, helping prevent breakage that leads to frizz.

Silkening Gloss Heat Protectant Hair Shine Serum

    Kenra
    Silkening Gloss Hair Serum
    $29
    SHOP NOW

Smoother hair equates to less frizz, and this glossy leave-in provides humidity resistance for hours on end. I apply this before I heat-style my hair, and it helps protect it from further damage. It also smells lovely, courtesy of the fruit and citrus scent.

    Damage Control

If your hair has been through it—bleach, color, hot tools, all of the above—these formulas help reinforce fragile strands. Many contain bond-supporting technology, proteins, or strengthening oils that temporarily fill in weak spots along the hair shaft, making hair feel stronger and look less frayed.

No. 9 Bond Protector Frizz Reduction amp;amp; Heat Protectant Hair Serum

    Olaplex
No. 9 Bond Protector Hair Serum
    $32
    SHOP NOW

I can't call out bond repair treatments without first giving ode to Olaplex, i.e., the brand that made fixing damaged hair its ethos. The No. 9 Bond Protector excels in strengthening strands just as well as the rest of the line—which, spoiler, is excellent.

Strength Cure Dream Healer Serum for Damaged Hair

    Pureology
    Strength Cure Dream Healer Serum
    $48
    SHOP NOW

I am in a committed relationship with Pureology shampoos and conditioners, and I recently adopted this serum into the family. The formulation leans on a blend of acids that strengthen weak bonds, mitigate future breakage, and visibly smooths cracks in the hair cuticle.

    Scalp First

Hair health really does start at the scalp, which is why scalp-focused serums have become such a big category. These formulas often feature ingredients like peptides, niacinamide, caffeine, or botanical extracts that help support a balanced scalp environment, which is ideal for hair growth.

Gro Hair Serum for Thinning Hair

    Vegamour
Gro Hair Serum for Thinning Hair
    $64
    SHOP NOW

Senior Beauty Editor Samantha Holender credits this serum as one of the main products responsible for fuller hair in her growth journey. Caffeine stimulates the scalp while turmeric increases the look of hair density, and biotin and peptides swoop in to strengthen the strands.

    Rosemary Serum | 30-Day Supply

    Nécessaire
    Rosemary Serum
    $48
    SHOP NOW

FYI, rosemary was proven to have similar results as minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine for hair loss. This serum is a natural alternative to a lot of big-name brands out there, and testers have seen promising results.
