Is it just us or has Lily Collins' newly-debuted pixie cut been a long time coming?

Like many stars, Collins has spent the past year flirting with different iterations of the on-trend cropped 'do and now she's finally gone for the zenith of chops: the pixie cut.

Considering short haircuts are all the rage and we're always contemplating going shorter ourselves, we think Collins has done an exemplary job of taking a gradual, not-so-daunting approach to the daring look.

In fact, as perpetual students in the art of hair, we're hailing it a three-step crash course in how to shed our lengths. Now, sit back, take notes, and get scissor-happy—your cheekbones will thank you.

Step 1) Lob it up. To achieve 2014's tour de force cut à la Lily, it's all about a shoulder-sweeping length, a bit of beachy texture, and a sombré dye job for dimension.

Step 2) Get a Bob. Cut your hair so that it just reaches the nape of your neck. Since the style was such a staple of the 1920's, take cues from Collins and experiment with retro raves and slicked-back 'dos.

Step 3) Go for the chop. If you need a little push, just look what a pixie crop did for Scarlett Johansson! (We suspect she was Collins' inspo). As far as length goes, you want choppy texture you can play with, so don't cut it too short. Lastly, style your newly-chopped coif in a side part to give it some cool-girl edge.
