Red lipstick is no different from your wardrobe—it's got to change with the season, which is why we've had our eyes glued to the red carpets in search of summer 2016's perfect jolt of color. And leave it to perpetual bombshell Gigi Hadid to introduce us to a sizzling new scarlet shade....
Never one to shy away from color, she opted for maybe the coolest red suit ever cut from Mugler's 2017 resort collection and a tangerine-red pout to match at the 2016 Much Music Awards. While her lip shade looks expensive—as in right at home adjacent to her diamond choker—in actuality, the only thing standing in between it and us plebes is a trip to the drugstore.
Makeup artist Patrick Ta created the lip by mixing together two shades from the Maybelline New York The Loaded Bolds collection, Smoking Red ( a flesh-toned lipstick to match her non-toured cheeks) and Orange Danger, to create the bespoke hue. Available online now, and in stores everywhere next month, the colors cost only $7.50 a pop and look equally as lovely on their own (re: the taupe-y red and eye-popping orange), as they do together.
So not only has Ta bestowed us with a killer combination to have in our repertoire, but he's also here to remind us that there's beauty in mixing up a custom shade.
"It's all about trial and error," he says. "I love mixing colors because it makes the look original. If you want the lip brighter, you can make it lighter, if you want it darker, you can have it darker. Just find lipsticks in the same color family."
To that end, it's always safe to choose shades from the same range as the colors and finishes of the formulas, which will make your perfect hue inherently easier to stir up.
