When it comes to Danessa Myricks Beauty, it doesn’t take much to convince me to try a new product. Not only is Danessa one of my favorite makeup artists of all time, but her eponymous cosmetics line is among the best on the market. I was introduced to the brand through one of its hero SKUs, the Colorfix cream pigments, but its Yummy Skin line has arguably surpassed it in popularity. So, of course, when the brand released its latest addition, the Barrier Boost Plumping Serum, I jumped at the chance to test it out.

Before I jump into the full review, allow me to provide some context. More often than not, the Yummy Skin branding alludes to two types of formulas: a hydrating skin prep product or a mattifier that boasts the line’s hero ingredient, upsalite. (Upsalite is a powder that has been scientifically proven to provide hours of sebum control.) This new launch falls into the former category. According to the brand, it’s described as “a milky serum powered by ten molecular weights of hyaluronic acid for multi-depth visibly plumping hydration.”

While my priming routine is down pat (ironically, I also use two additional products from the Yummy Skin line to keep my face oil-free), my skin prep could, admittedly, use a bit more work. After a few days of testing this product, it’s filled a hole in my routine that I didn’t even realize was there, and my makeup has been looking phenomenal as a result. Keep reading to see my full review of the new serum, plus a few of my additional favorites from the brand that I fully believe everyone should own.

    The Formula

I’ve been using this product for skin prep, and the key ingredients make it the perfect formula for the job. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that provides deep hydration, allowing the skin to retain more water and, in turn, gives it a glowy, plump appearance. Ectoin creates a protective shield that not only hydrates skin cells but also strengthens the skin barrier. Other ingredients, like diglycerin, continue to add moisture while offering more sensorial elegance to the formula.

Applying Barrier Boost Plumping Serum is pretty easy, thanks to the targeted applicator and squeeze-tube packaging. I prefer to apply it directly to the face and then rub it in (about two finger-lengths worth), but if you’re sharing it with a loved one or if you are a makeup artist, I suggest dispensing it into clean hands to keep everything hygienic.

As with any skin prep routine, I let the product sink into the skin for two to three minutes before going in with any additional products. The texture is gel-like and lightweight enough that I also love layering it onto any dry spots (mine's right under my lower lip), almost like a hydrating mask. It's like a shot of targeted moisture that makes any dry, scaly patches feel (and look) soft, supple, and healthy.

    The Takeaway

In all, this is one of my favorite skin-prep products to come out in recent months. Everything from the ease of use to the formula itself makes the product a pleasure to use, and I firmly believe that if you’re adding a product to your routine, not only should it work, but the experience should be as seamless as possible.

As for my makeup routine when using this product, I notice less separation around my nose and mouth, which is where I typically see some cracking when I use only my mattifying or oil-control primers. Any dry spots remained smooth and soft to the touch all day, which leads me to believe that the hydrating ingredients provide long-lasting benefits beyond makeup prep.

When wearing this alone under makeup, I definitely noticed a sustained glow to my skin. Still, without my mattifying primers, my skin became a little too oily for my liking, so I'll always pair this serum with the Yummy Skin Balm (or any other oil-wicking product) in my t-zone, which is where I prefer to control sebum production.

When I'm in a rush (which, to be honest, is most mornings), I love using this product as a one-and-done skin prep, and it's been working really well as we continue battling through an endless winter in New York City. That being said, whether you have dry, oily, or even dull or aging skin, you will absolutely see a difference in the application and appearance of your makeup when you use this product. If you’re suddenly feeling the urge for a Sephora trip, keep reading for a few more products from the brand that I recommend picking up while you’re there.
