Demi Lovato Joked About Getting "Unengaged" to Max Ehrich at the People's Choice Awards

Demi Lovato hosted the People's Choice Awards Sunday night, reflecting on her hectic 2020 in her opening monologue—during which she joked about getting engaged and then "unengaged" to her ex, Max Ehrich. The former couple split in September, two months after Ehrich proposed.

"I am so excited to be here tonight because honestly this year has been the longest three years of my life," Lovato said, as People reports. "Don't get me wrong, it started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then COVID hit, and everything shut down."

"So I did what everyone else did: I went into lockdown mode, and got engaged," she joked. "I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited. Also, I didn't know this could happen, but I reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert. So basically the same as everyone else!"

A source told People at the time of the breakup that Lovato and Ehrich separated due to distance, after Ehrich began shooting a movie in Atlanta after months of the couple quarantining together. "Demi and Max were basically together 24/7 for months," the insider said. "They lived in a bubble with zero stress, and everything was just fun. Now they are both working and are on separate coasts."

Another insider told E! that Lovato began to have doubts about Ehrich. "There has been a lot of tension and Demi left him to get a clear head. She didn't know who Max truly was and didn't think he had good intentions," they said. "There were many red flags she was ignoring and trying to turn a blind eye to."
