Gwen Stefani Listened to Gwen Stefani Songs to Get Through Her Divorce

Gwen Stefani is up there with Adele when it comes to crafting a perfect, heart-wrenching breakup song. Seriously, how many tears have been shed while "Don't Speak" blasted in the background? And in a new interview, it turns out Stefani isn't immune to her own emotional lyrics.

Opening up about her breakup songs on The Tommy Show on 94.7 Fresh FM, Stefani admitted she would listen to her old songs and think she was "not in that place" anymore, but now she can't make that excuse since her divorce from Gavin Rossdale. "It's almost the opposite because of my situation right now, which we all know what I'm talking about," she said. "I feel like I go back and listen to a lot of that stuff, and I get sick. You look at the song and you go, 'That was a red flag. That was a moment where I was feeling just as bad as I feel today and why did I keep it up?'"

Though she said she wished the divorce "didn't happen," she says it's been great fodder for her work. "In my life I've had two really bad heartbreaks and I've written some incredible music out of it," she said. "I feel so lucky to have that and to be able to share it. I feel like it's part of what I contribute to the world and I feel really proud of that." Case in point: "I Used to Love You," her new single that requires a pint of Ben Jerry's to get through emotionally.
