Prince William Makes History as the First Royal to Cover a Gay Publication

"No one should be bullied for their sexuality...and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives."

Just days before the Orlando shooting, an historic issue of Attitude magazine—the first gay publication to feature a member of the royal family on its cover—went to press. Inside, Prince William speaks out against homophobia after bringing members of the LGBT community to Kensington Palace to discuss bullying and its mental health repercussions. 

"No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason," he said. "And no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives."

Calling the nine people who attended the meeting last month "truly brave," the Duke of Cambridge expressed hope that young gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals who've experienced homophobia would seek help and find self-acceptance.

"Their sense of strength and optimism should give us all encouragement to stand up to bullying wherever we see it. What I would say to any young person reading this who's being bullied for their sexuality: don't put up with it...You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of."
