So Um...Nicole Kidman's Grace Kelly Biopic Is Becoming a Lifetime Movie
Quite a fall from its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Grace of Monaco was supposed to be a big, glitzy biopic. In fact, the Nicole Kidman-fronted movie made a major splash at the Cannes Film Festival last year. But after a slew of nasty reviews and off-screen feuding, it won't hit the big screen in the U.S. at all—and will end up seeing a much less glamorous fate.
The film was originally set for a release in November 2013, to line it up for awards season. But after major drama with distributor Harvey Weinstein and director Olivier Dahan about the final cut of the film, the released was delayed until Spring 2014, then pulled indefinitely. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Grace of Monaco will air on Lifetime on May 25.
Critics panned the movie when it hit the festival circuit, and it has already come and gone in international theaters. The film follows Grace Kelly (Kidman) in the years after her famous wedding to Monaco's Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth); Kelly is shown feuding with Prince Rainier and wishing she could go back to her life as a Hollywood actress. According to Variety, the royal family of Monaco objected to the way they were presented, calling it "totally fictional."
Now, the movie will air on Lifetime and be eligible for Emmys, not Oscars. And it's the latest Lifetime biopic of a famous female—they've already told the stories of Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, and Brittany Murphy. Though given the movie's pedigree, it's likely to be a bit more highbrow drama than schmaltzy fun.
