'Running Point' Season 2: Everything We Know

Whether or not you're a sports fan, Netflix's comedy Running Point is a must-watch show if you're looking for a feel-good underdog story. Co-created by Mindy Kaling, the series brings the recent dominance of women in sports to the small screen via the fictional basketball franchise, the L.A. Waves. When former party girl socialite Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is appointed team president over her brothers, she has to prove her family, the players, and the general public wrong.

By the end of Running Point's 10-episode season, fans see how far Isla can take the team throughout the regular season. If you binged the show, it's time to learn whether the dysfunctional Gordon family and the Waves will return for another season. Here's what we know about a possible Running Point season 2.

Has 'Running Point' been renewed for season 2?

Yes! Just one week after Running Point premiered on Netflix on February 27, 2025, the streaming giant renewed its original series for season 2. The news was announced on Netflix's X (formerly Twitter) with a video featuring star Kate Hudson and a post that says, "It's official: See you next season. RUNNING POINT S2 IS COMING."

In the clip, Hudson spoke to the show's runaway success. "A good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans. So we hear you, and so did Netflix. Running Point is officially coming back for season 2!" she exclaims. "Thank you so much everyone who watched the show so far! I’m just beyond thrilled because you’re really the reason why we’re able to come back and do another season. So thank you and we’ll see you next season!"

Though Netflix often waits to see how many viewers tune in before deciding whether to renew, Running Point has been a runaway hit, immediately landing in the streamer's Top 10. Co-creators Mindy Kaling and Hudson had also been campaigning for a second installment. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight before the show's premiere, the duo directly addressed Netflix executives about the show's future.

"I had so much fun doing this. I just want to keep doing it," Hudson said with a grin. Kaling added, "This is a message to Ted Sarandos: We love making the show, if you want to just pick us up for five more seasons."

Thankfully, we're definitely getting that sophomore run!

When will 'Running Point' season 2 be released?

The Waves's season is back in session! In late February 2026, Netflix announced via a press release that Running Point season 2 will premiere on Thursday, April 23. The release date was teased with a series of first-look photos, which you can see throughout this story.

The series has followed a relatively quick turnaround since it was first announced. For example, season 1 was filmed in spring 2024 before arriving on Netflix around a year later, and season 2 began production in August 2025. While sometimes Netflix takes its sweet time with some originals, we're thrilled to be back on the court and sitting on the sidelines with the Gordon fam very soon.

Who in the 'Running Point' cast will return for season 2?

All of the show's main cast is confirmed to return. This includes Kate Hudson (Isla Gordon), Brenda Song (Ali Lee), Justin Theroux (Cam Gordon), Scott MacArthur (Ness Gordon), Drew Tarver (Sandy Gordon), Fabrizio Guido (Jackie Moreno), Jay Ellis (Jay Brown), Toby Sandeman (Marcus Winfield), Dane DiLiegro (Badrag), Uche Agada (Dyson), Roberto Sanchez (Stephen Ramirez), Scott Evans (Charlie), Max Greenfield (Lev Levenson), Chet Hanks (Travis Bugg), Jon Glaser (Sean Murphy), Rob Huebel (Clint), Marissa Reyes (Sofia), and Justin Hurtt-Dunkley (Victor Coburn Jr.). In fact, we'll be seeing more of Theroux and Agada, as they have been upped from recurring cast members to series regulars, according to a press release.

Are there any new cast members in 'Running Point' season 2?

Yes! While Running Point was in production for season 2, Netflix confirmed with a press release that a handful of new names had been cast. Ken Marino (of Party Down and The Other Two fame) and Blake Anderson (from Workaholics) join the ensemble, as well as a handful of rising talent, including Tommy Dewey, Richa Moorjani, Jake Picking, Duby Maduegbunam, and Aliyah Turner.

The streamer shared the following descriptions of their roles:

• Marino takes on Al Fleischman, "The self-appointed 'toilet king of Orange County' who wants better courtside seats to the Los Angeles Waves."
• Casual star Dewey is Magnus, "The general manager of the Toronto Trappers."
• Fargo and Never Have I Ever alum Moorjani plays Aruna, The Waves's "incredibly blunt star accountant who can finagle her way around any number of financial hurdles."
• Top Gun: Maverick actor Picking plays the Waves's "new pretty-boy star point guard," Tommy White.
• Anderson joins as "Cam's wild, sober companion," Leroy."
• Maduegbunam (Caught Up, Sistas) will portray Benson, "the newest basketball player on the" team.
• And Turner (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) takes on Zoé Debay, who is said to be "a beautiful and confident former child star who’s now on the verge of becoming an A-list actress."

In late October, Deadline also reported a major switch-up. Although Netflix originally announced that The Hollywood Shuffle and The Parent 'Hood star Robert Townsend would join in an important recurring role, it was later confirmed that the part had been recast and gone to another comedy legend: Ray Romano. Now, the Everybody Loves Raymond alum will play veteran basketball coach Norm Stinson.

As Deadline reported, the role of Norm has been "reconceived" and his scenes are being reshot. Now, Norm is "a basketball savant-turned-social recluse who will team with Isla to re-discover his love for the game, and life." Originally, he was still a longtime coach, though he was supposed to be "grouchy" and a poor communicator with his teams.

It's unclear why Townsend is no longer attached to the project or what sparked the change in the Norm character. We'll have to wait and see how Romano fits into the Waves family!

Even more exciting: There will be a handful of guest stars in season 2. When Netflix dropped the trailer (more on that below), it confirmed via a press release that series executive producer Ike Barinholtz will appear in a guest role, as well as Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, Real Housewives alum Lisa Rinna, '00s icon Nicole Richie, and actor Scott Speedman.

What will 'Running Point' season 2 be about?

When Netflix confirmed the season 2 premiere date, the streamer also unveiled the synopsis for the forthcoming episodes. It reads: "Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is no longer the surprise choice to lead the L.A. Waves, she’s the one everyone is watching. With the franchise finally rebounding after last year’s scandal, Isla is determined to prove she’s not just keeping the seat warm for her brother Cam (Justin Theroux). What she doesn’t know is that Cam is quietly maneuvering behind the scenes to reclaim his post, turning every misstep into ammunition. As she tries to balance the pressure of running a franchise with devoting time to her personal life, every decision on and off the court counts. To survive the family power plays and the scrutiny of the board, she’ll have to rip up last season’s game plan and come up with a whole new playbook if she wants to close out the season on top. From executive producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, season 2 of Running Point raises the stakes, deepens the family drama, and finds even more comedy in what it takes to run a modern sports empire."

Fans may recall a face-off between Isla and Cam, teased as a cliffhanger in the season 1 finale. When she strolled into her office after the Waves lost game seven in the playoffs (but was consoled with a kiss from her will-they-won't-they crush Jay!), she saw Cam out of rehab and trying to reclaim his stake in his former office.

So, as the synopsis teases, their rivalry will be a big focus going forward—especially considering the Gordons don't yet know that Cam was the one spreading rumors about them to the press. He likely didn't expect his baby sister to succeed; now that she has, he'll probably go full betrayal mode to get his position back. However, as we know, Isla is more than ready to put up a fight. They say, "Gordons never lose," but what happens when it's Gordon v. Gordon?

Is there a trailer for 'Running Point' season 2?

Yes! Netflix dropped a trailer for Running Point season 2 about a month before the premiere date. The delightful clip teases that it's nothing but net for Isla and the Waves this season. While she says, "This year, I plan on winning it all," she's also met with feuding players, PR disasters (including her own), tension between her and her conniving brother Cam, a curmudgeon new coach, and even the court's ceiling falling through. "People still treat me like the mess I used to be," she says at one point—but we don't doubt that she and her ragtag team will still come out on top!

There's also a first look at the previously secret guest stars, and many laughs to be had in what looks like another slam-dunk of a season.
