I Finally Tried Fashion's Bag Layering Trend—Now I Get the Hype
Spotted across recent runways, this styling hack has found its way into every It girl's closet.
Double-bagging as a practice of convenience is nothing new—especially for New Yorkers, who are often lugging a canvas tote alongside their handbag of choice. Still, it’s only recently that the look is the result of intentional styling, and not pure necessity. After trying it firsthand with a few fun bag combos for spring, I must say: I get the hype.
When the Spring 2026 shows featured models at Fendi, Lacoste, and Dolce Gabbana toting multiple bags down the runway, I knew bag layering would be a trend to watch. My suspicions were confirmed by Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2026 show, at which multiple models walked the New York City subway station setup with not one, but two bags in tow. The same look emerged on the Fall 2026 runways of Fendi, Bottega Veneta, TWP, and Erdem. The list goes on.
I’ve always been more of a practical double-bagger, as so many Manhattanites are. However, it wasn’t until seeing designers opt to style multiple bags for fashion that I saw the would-be necessity as a benefit when putting together my looks.
Rather than resent that my laptop doesn’t fit in my dainty top-handle purse, I could relish in the chance to style up not one, but two bags at once. In fact, permission to do so has since saved me from many bouts of decision fatigue since. Why choose between two great bags for one occasion?
I first tried the trend with intention during February fashion week. The Marc Jacobs team had kindly sent over both the Grommet Charm Christina Tote (Edgy! Kitschy! Huge!) and the Glossy Croc Snapshot Shoulder Bag (Mini! Pretty! Chic!). I couldn’t decide which better suited my look, so I grabbed both and hopped in a cab so as to not miss my first show of the day.
The result? A layered look that ended up feeling intentional and cool. I was hooked!
Since then, I’ve dabbled in quite a few fun double-bagging combinations, and I’ve found there’s many different ways to nail the trend without looking like you got confused when it came time to accessorize. Below, discover a few of my favorites.
Big Tote + Small Purse
The tote-and-handbag combination is perhaps the most obvious way to try the trend, and the contrast in sizes makes most pairings feel balanced. My all-neutral outfit—featuring a beaded Zara skirt I’ve had forever and a beloved Old Navy bomber—was in need of a zhuzh, so I grabbed two bags from Liffner: the Pillow Leather Shoulder Bag and the Pushlock Clutch in Beige Lizard.
The benefit to something like a tote-and-clutch combo is that one bag rests on my shoulder for most of the day, while I hold the other in my hand. They serve different purposes, so it doesn’t seem excessive to carry both.
Yes, I could have just opted for a canvas tote, but the swap for this buttery leather feels much more intentional. Plus, the texture play is out of this world.
Shoulder Bag + Micro Bag Charm
If you need to ease into the idea of double-bagging, might I suggest ditching your Labubu for a micro bag charm? Brandon Blackwood makes my faves. On a day where my outfit felt a bit underwhelming—an Anine Bing trench coat, a Tibi blouse, and my favorite Spanx jeans—I spiced things up with the head-turning Nia Bag in Yellow Distressed Pony Hair, plus my Click Bag in Light Brown Snakeskin hooked onto the strap. This combo was a hit with everyone I ran into, not to mention a practical way to separate my house keys from the rest of the clutter I crammed into my purse. Therein lies another benefit to double-bagging: increased organization! I can keep the more practical essentials (my wallet, my keys, my charger) in one bag, and the fun stuff (my lip combo, hand cream, and whatever else I justify that day) in another space entirely. No more endless digging!
Two of a Kind
Contrasting sizes and shapes can make double-bagging feel fun, but I’m also a fan of pairing two of a kind. Verafied’s Éclair Bag has multiple strap options that make it extremely versatile. I paired the Silver Ivory with the shoulder strap alongside the Python with the shorter handles for a really funky layered look.
Out of all the bag combos I tried, this was probably my favorite. I styled the white version alongside a white blouse from Tory Burch to ensure the python bag was the major “pop” of the outfit, and complemented with my pony hair flats and my go-to spring pants from Anthropologie. The result? A look I’ll be wearing on repeat this season.
