Think of your ideal summer wardrobe. It probably includes a few pairs of breezy linen pants and linen dresses, along with some denim cut-offs (jorts, if you will) and tank tops. If you only had those pieces, you would be missing my favorite—and possibly the most underrated—summer fashion essential: the best linen skirts. As a self-appointed lazy fashion editor, I love how the relaxed, barely-there style makes getting dressed on hot days a no-brainer

Linen skirts, like linen shorts, are often grouped with swimsuit coverups—the kind of item you only wear on vacation—but they are much more versatile. They address the classic summer fashion dilemma: that sticky feeling after wearing a close-fitting garment in over eighty-degree heat. Instead, you want pieces that keep you looking put-together even on the hottest summer days. Yes, linen skirts are perfect for vacations, but they can also easily be styled for a summer work outfit.

A guest wears a white latte linen shirt, a white linen matching midi skirt, a black shiny leather clutch, black shiny leather pointed ballerinas , outside Dior , during the Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023/2024 as part of Paris Fashion Week on July 03, 2023 in Paris, France.

A linen set, consisting of a button-down blouse and matching midi skirt, and pointed-toe ballet flats is an understated yet fool-proof combo.

The linen skirts ahead are made from either 100 percent linen or a blend of linen and another lightweight fabric, like cotton or Lyocell, a rayon made from recycled wood pulp. Blends with other fabrics can prevent the skirt from wrinkling all day without adding weight, so don’t rule out pieces with multiple percentage marks in the description just yet.

Pleated Drawstring Maxi Skirt in Linen Blend

    J.Crew
Pleated Drawstring Maxi Skirt in Linen Blend
    $143
    SHOP NOW

For those new to the trend, bright bubble gum pink is rising as a popular summer 2025 color. It first appeared on the season's runways, then among street style enthusiasts, and now your favorite retailers are offering their own versions of the shade. J.Crew joins the bubble gum trend with this simple, front-slit pleated maxi dress made from a lightweight linen blend, making it a charming (no pun intended) way to start with the vibrant hue.

    Nicola Convertible Skirt

    Free People
    Nicola Convertible Skirt
    $60
    SHOP NOW

As you know, summer fashion is about using as little energy as possible, which means you want simple clothes that do the work for you. For example: this two-in-one Free People linen skirt that can be worn as a cute midi or a strapless mini dress when pulled up to your chest, and it’s only $60. It also comes in neutral off-white for minimalists and a bright hibiscus pink for those who like more color.

Zw Collection 100% Linen Midi Skirt

    ZARA
Zw Collection 100% Linen Midi Skirt
    $48
    SHOP NOW

Alongside bubble-blowing pink, warm chocolate brown is a trendy color for the season that you'll soon see everywhere. Think of it as a softer, less austere alternative to black that feels slightly more in tune with the hot and hazy months. Zara's take on the color trend is this relaxed, drawstring-waist linen midi, which would pair very well with either a casual white tee or a more refined blouse.

    Madwell, Eyelet-Embroidered Maxi Skirt

    Madwell
    Eyelet-Embroidered Maxi Skirt
    $138
    SHOP NOW

In 2025, designers across the high-fashion world and affordable retail market are paying closer attention to the detailed craft of embroidery, as shown by this hole-punched eyelet maxi from Madewell. It's a simple nod to summer's bohemian style, but it remains understated enough to keep in your wardrobe next year as well, when fashion shifts to yet another aesthetic.

    Linen Mini Skirt

    Banana Republic
    Linen Mini Skirt
    $100
    $150 AT BANANA REPUBLIC

I will always tell my friends to embrace the Banana Republic hype. The brand’s new arrivals page is filled with some of the coolest, most wearable pieces, like this zebra mini skirt made from 100% linen shell and lining. Pair it with a matching linen blazer for an office look, or style it with a T-shirt or tank top for everyday wear.

    Andi Linen Maxi Skirt

    Reformation
    Andi Linen Maxi Skirt
    $198
    $158 AT REFORMATION

I'm loving Reformation's new arrivals right now, and this black and white gingham skirt is a highlight for the upcoming season. Paired with a cropped white blouse and fun toe ring sandals, it's a great addition to my weekend wardrobe. For the details, it's made from 100% linen and is also available in a black and white check print.

My Little Micro Mini Cotton-Linen Skort

    Free People
My Little Micro Mini Cotton-Linen Skort
    $50
    SHOP NOW

As staff writer Meguire Hennes recently mentioned in MC's fashion group chat, "Justice for skorts!" The practical, Frankenstein-style bottom provides coverage and lets you go through your day without worrying about accidental indecent exposure. Free People's top-selling linen mini skort, available in 16 different colors—from cerulean to coral and pistachio green—is a great place to start.

    Lace Nature Midi-Skirt

    Farm Rio
    Lace Nature Midi-Skirt
    $190
    SHOP NOW

Even if you don't have a trip planned to a remote tropical or beach destination, that doesn't mean you can't dress as if you do. Farm Rio's leaf-printed and scallop-hem midi skirt will bring a sense of island escape into your wardrobe.

    Linen Blend Skirt

    Caslon
    Linen Blend Skirt
    $48
    SHOP NOW

Stripes are up there with picnic gingham when I think of patterns synonymous with summer. However, I like that this midi from Caslon opts for a muted mint green instead of the expected navy you'd see on a Breton stripe.

    Madewell, Linen Maxi Slip Skirt

    Madewell
    Linen Maxi Slip Skirt
    $128
    SHOP NOW

This deep navy linen maxi skirt is a smart buy since it works as a relaxed weekend staple and also for the office. For the latter, though, consider dressing it up with a slight kitten heel and structured waistcoat or linen blazer.

    Kaitlin Striped Linen Wrap Skirt

    Staud
    Kaitlin Striped Linen Wrap Skirt
    $295
    SHOP NOW

You can always trust Staud to infuse personality into an otherwise neutral wardrobe staple—take its linen wrap skirt printed in playful rainbow stripes, for example. The patterned maxi says, 'Hi, I'm fun!' but it doesn't scream it.

    Linen Blend Wrap Skort

    Open Edit
    Linen Blend Wrap Skort
    $55
    SHOP NOW

Paired with a sensible kitten heel that I can walk in and my favorite white tank—side note: summer 2025 is giving the simple basic a not-basic-at-all rebrand—I can see this black linen skort staying in my summer wardrobe for years to come.

Alex Mill, Maddie Skirt in Linen

    Alex Mill
    Maddie Skirt in Linen
    $175
    SHOP NOW

Yes, cherry red saw a spike earlier this year as one of the most popular shades on runways and at retailers alike. But I'd say go as far as to qualify the bright ruby shade as a classic more than a trend—it's the same maximalist school of thought that qualifies leopard print as a neutral. This Alex Mill midi does the eye-catching color justice.

    X Revolve Antibes Skirt

    FAITHFULL THE BRAND
    X Revolve Antibes Skirt
    $260
    $259 AT NET-A-PORTER

This 100 percent linen piece from Faithfull The Brand is a summer update to the classic workwear pencil skirt. It comes in sizes XS through XXL, and its cool, butter yellow shade makes it the perfect piece to style with a black top or black accessories. My all-black-clothing-wearing heart can definitely get behind that.

    Phelan Tie-Front Pointelle-Knit Linen-Blend Midi Skirt

    PROENZA SCHOULER WHITE LABEL
    Phelan Tie-Front Pointelle-Knit Linen-Blend Midi Skirt
    $495
    SHOP NOW

What I love about the New York City-based brand Proenza Schouler, including its affordable white label, is how it plays with subverted design elements that still feel attainable. This ruby red midi comes with a built-in wrap around the waist, which is a styling hack I first saw in NYFW street style two years ago and haven't stopped thinking about since.

Pleated Knee-Length Skirt in Stretch Linen Blend

    J.Crew
Pleated Knee-Length Skirt in Stretch Linen Blend
    $105
    SHOP NOW

Calling all preppy dressers: If you enjoy the prim and pressed look of a pleated skirt, but can't bear wearing one made of heavy wool or thick tweed, try J.Crew's linen option that hits right at the knee.

    Linen-Blend Midi Column Skirt

    COS
    Linen-Blend Midi Column Skirt
    $81
    SHOP NOW

I see the name Cos, and I'm already reaching for my credit card. The brand has mastered an ethos of creating interesting, well-made basics at a price point that's not outrageous. Here, this barely blush column linen skirt epitomizes the retailer's classic-with-a-twist methodology.
