There's a certain magic to unconventional shoes. Maison Margiela's hooved-toe Tabis are considered a holy grail find in fashion circles. Even the beloved granola Birkenstock slip-on slides tap into fashion's coveted ugly-chic aesthetic against all odds. Along with jelly sandals and garden clogs, this season, another once-polarizing style has returned for a second wind: mesh flats, sheer, sock-like shoes that play peek-a-boo with your pedicure.

The beginning of the mesh flats trend can be traced back to The Row, as many recent all-consuming fashion trends do. In 2019, the high-end label revealed its Mesh Sock Flats(still available today), a pair of diaphanous slippers that mimic the sensation of walking on air. But it's not just Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen embracing barely-there footwear. Alaïa now makes black-netted Mary Janes that have sold out and been restocked repeatedly, while Khaite carries sheer slip-ons bedazzled with sweet florals and Swarovski crystals. The footwear trend has also trickled down to the more affordable mainstream.

Trendalytics Director of Trend and Editorial Strategy, Kendall Becker, tells Marie Claire that even more labels—both luxury and contemporary—are rushing to meet the demands of consumers eager to get their hands on these coveted shoes. “On average, retailers have increased this style within their assortments by 84 percent this season, in comparison to last spring,” she says.

So, what makes these translucent shoes so appealing? Becker explains that there is a growing desire for sweeter styles over the past year aligned with the girlhood aesthetic. Think bows, rosettes, and pretty shades of pink. “With an evident feminine flair, mesh flats fit right into this trend alongside traditional ballet flats.”

Becker also notes that mesh flats are a practical footwear choice for the warmer months. “They’re breathable, lightweight, and comfortable, making them an ideal style for sweltering days,” she says. “Whether you’re roaming around the city or jetting off to the shore, a pair of mesh flats will effortlessly fit into your wardrobe." They're also a great alternative to sandals for the workplace.

Ahead, discover Marie Claire's curated edit of the best mesh flats to add to your summer shoe rotation. Each pair was chosen based on material, styling potential, and reviews from well-dressed women, including Marie Claire editors.

"Initially, I wasn't the biggest mesh flats fan," admits Fashion Editor Lauren Tappan. "But after seeing Zendaya wear Bottega Veneta's version with a tank top and slouchy trousers, I've been convinced that this footwear style deserves a prime spot in my capsule wardrobe." Tappan plans to jump on the trend bandwagon with Mango's buckled ballet flats. Not only are these shoes incredibly stylish, but they are priced under $100, making them an affordable deal.

    ALAIA

    Alaïa
    Mesh Mary Jane Ballerina Flats
    $890 AT BERGDORF GOODMAN

Behold the very flats worn by half of Hollywood. These Alaïa flats are having a real moment, sported by insiders like Sofia Richie Grainge and numerous fashion editors. The thicker mesh material reveals less of your foot than some of the finer mesh options on this list, and the strap across the top won't stretch or wear over time. They come in three other colors, but black offers a fun twist on classic ballet flats.

It's the mesh flat that started it all! The Row's sock-like style comes in black and beige and offers an unexpected sultriness akin to the effect of lingerie. Given their no-fuss silhouette and design, they feel as if you're not wearing shoes. Jennifer Lawrence is also a fan, having worn them repeatedly.

If you're not a fan of neutrals or hoping to step out of your color comfort zone this season, try the Aloha Gill flats in sky blue. With their dainty shape, this pair leans into the classic look of a ballet slipper with a see-through 2025 twist. The vibrant hue will make everything—from jeans and a white T-shirt to a floaty sundress—feel infinitely more dressed up.

    $130 AT AMAZON

When you work in fashion, you are acutely aware of every trend, but sometimes you can't afford every trend," says Entertainment Director Neha Prakash. Luckily, Amazon offers an array of affordable mesh flats, like Sam Edelman's Miranda shoes (which Prakash adores). "These mesh flats are so perfect—the Mary Jane style buckle and timeless black hue make them very of the moment, but they also won't break the bank, so you won't feel bad if they go out of style in a few seasons," she says. "The non-mesh toe also makes them more wearable, especially in the gross—and often wet—streets of New York City. They do run big, so I would recommend sizing down.

    $84 AT REVOLVE

In her footwear collection, Becker has plenty of flats, but one of her go-to styles is Schutz’s Arissa shoes. “These black mesh flats are so versatile, and they fit right into my rotation of summer outfits,” she says. “For those looking for a pair of mesh flats to wear daily, I suggest adding these cute shoes to your shopping cart." Alternatively, Schutz offers the same style in white if that’s your color preference.
