The Elegant Summer Work Dresses That Help Me Exude 'She Means Business' Energy

Most of my weekdays are spent at the Marie Claire office, which is why I’ve built a well-rounded collection of professional pieces—like tailored trousers, crisp button-down shirts, and sleek blazers—that create office-friendly uniforms. I also rely on a rotation of the best work dresses to anchor my semi-corporate capsule wardrobe, especially in the summer months.

On most work days, you can find me in a minimalist-style sheath dress with a lightweight cardigan layered over my shoulders. I’ll slip into low-to-the-ground shoes, like ballet flats or loafers, that make running from one meeting to the next easy. For a casual look in peak summer heat, I team a relaxed linen dress with a pair of work sneakers alongside an oversized tote bag that’s large enough for all my desk essentials.

Above all, though, I'm a firm believer that the best summer work dresses prioritize comfort. So, I make sure to shop for dresses made of soft linen blends and lightweight cotton, fabrications guaranteed to keep me cool.

If you’re also looking to infuse a hint of ease and elegance into your corporate style, scroll on. Ahead, you'll discover a variety of dresses that have earned my stamp of approval, plus several others that rank high on my wishlist. Whether I’m attending a quick coffee-and-chat meeting or an upscale business dinner, these styles get the job done.

    Midi and Maxi Dresses

Is your office dress code a bit unclear? If so, err on the side of caution with longer hemlines that provide more coverage.

In most cases, a dress with a hemline that falls below the knees or around the ankles is suitable for any office dress code. J.Crew and Reformation master the covered-up high-neck midi, while brands like Banana Republic offer sweetheart neckline styles that are less buttoned-up. And if you choose a form-fitted number, just be mindful not to go for a full-on bodycon fit.

    Shift Dresses

During sweltering summer days, the best way to beat the heat is to wear an airy shift dress.

Styling summer work outfits during a heat wave is no easy feat. But don’t worry, there’s a simple solution. For sizzling temps, I’d recommend a shift dress with a billowing shape that won’t cling uncomfortably to your skin. Try options from Madewell, Everlane, and Gap, which are short enough to keep you cool but still feel appropriate for the workplace.

    Shirt Dresses

There's no denying that a button-down shirt is a workwear must-have. The same goes for a button-down shirt dress.

Defined by a neat point collar, crisp cotton fabric, and charming buttons along the front, a shirt dress has a professional foundation that makes it a non-negotiable workwear item. If you prefer to stick with a standard button-down shirt design, Aritzia and Staud have what you need. To put a dynamic twist on the look, consider J.Crew’s cinched and ruched shirt dress that adds volume and creates an hourglass silhouette.

    Wrap Dresses

For the days when you don't feel like putting a ton of effort into styling your look, you can count on a wrap dress to work overtime.

The beauty of a wrap dress is that it practically styles itself. With a crossover design and a waist tie, you don’t have to add much to this look, making dressing for the office a tad easier (especially if you’re in a rush). Depending on your desired coverage, Mango and Quince offer alternatives with shorter sleeves, while Vince designs a refined long-sleeve rendition.

    Sheath Dresses

One of the most quintessential work dresses is a standard sheath dress. Do yourself a favor and add one to your wardrobe.

For those moments when you want to exude a 'she means business' vibe, slip into a sheath dress that commands attention. Veronica Beard and Lafayette 148 provide polished daytime alternatives with bright hues, while Norma Kamali’s versatile all-black version can be easily up-styled for a post-work happy hour or dinner date.

    Nap Dresses

Consider a roomy nap dress for your collection of in-office outfits. Just make sure not to fall asleep at your desk while wearing it!

Hill House Home's signature nap dress is so cozy, you could practically fall asleep in it. Fashion E-Commerce Editor Julia Marzovilla once told me that the fabric of this piece is extremely lightweight and its spacious silhouette won’t cause you to overheat. So, I added her favorite Hill House Home's dress to my shopping cart, along with similar styles from Banana Republic and Zara.

    Printed Dresses

Looking for a work dress that will attract compliments but won't cause a stir? A flowy piece with subtle prints will fit the bill.

Yes, I’m a minimalist whose wardrobe is filled with neutrals. However, I like to have a bit of fun here and there with playful patterns that make a statement. This season, I’m leaning into summer 2025’s most viral trends, including polka dots, florals, and gingham prints. These styles from Posse, Reformation, and Dôen have a whimsical appeal, without reading too maximalist.
