These days, I have more fun shopping for my 5- and 2-year-old nieces than I do for myself. I love the miniature cardigans, frilly dresses, and tiny shoes adorned with butterflies, unicorns, and flowers. It's completely whimsical and a far departure from my typical shopping list of neutral wardrobe staples. Shopping for these girls is always a reminder to have more fun with fashion, and back-to-school season is the perfect excuse to pick up a few gifts. Bloomingdale's has everything kids need for a head-to-toe outfit. Below, I've shopped out clothing, backpacks, and shoes that will withstand a bit of wear and tear on the playground. This is just a taste of what the retailer has to offer.

    The Girls' Department

Shopping through the lens of what I would've wanted to wear on my first day of school has landed me on these four styles. Your kids can mix and match these pieces and wear them with a few basic T-shirts or tank tops.

This is unknown territory for me, but if I had a son, I'd be dressing him in this Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby Shirt ($70) nearly every day. These pieces are functional and comfortable, perfect for active boys on the go this school year.

    Footwear

I always loved picking out a new pair of sneakers for the school year. I would often choose a pair with a hint of pink or lavender. All four styles below are versatile enough to satisfy parents' practicality but fun enough for the kids to showcase a bit of personality.
