Fashion’s Most Coveted Handbags Are Looking a Little Worse for Wear

The runways have spoken—your leather bag should look lived in.

The runways have been steadily dismantling the notion that a luxury handbag should arrive pristine. Across recent collections, leather accessories have taken on a more timeworn disposition: surfaces are burnished and mottled, silhouettes appear softened by years of imagined wear, and rich shades of tobacco, oxblood, espresso, and black are treated to look faded rather than freshly finished. It follows fashion’s broader fascination with imperfection, as designers trade conspicuous newness for pieces that feel archival, storied, and like they could have been around for decades. You’ll see it at Acne, Khaite, and Prada, of course.

That shift feels particularly compelling against the refinement elsewhere on the runway. Supple, distressed bags temper razor-sharp tailoring, diaphanous dresses, and immaculate knitwear with something tougher and less mannered, introducing texture without relying on overt embellishment. There’s an unmistakable vintage quality at play, too: these are bags designed to resemble the rare leather find pulled from an estate sale or unearthed in a decades-old archive. Rather than disguising age, fashion is increasingly aestheticizing it, and the season’s most compelling leather bags look as though they have already lived an entire life. What could be chicer than that? Bags are meant to be used!

That lived-in sensibility is filtering across every tier of the market, from Saint Laurent's vintage-effect Mombasa and Alaïa's distressed Le Teckel to Staud's slouchy Port tote and Zara's studded iterations. Even more refined silhouettes from Prada and Liffner are leaning into supple, tactile leathers and softened structures. The key takeaway? Nothing is too precious to be loved.

    Senior Shopping Editor

Cortne Bonilla is Marie Claire’s Senior Shopping Editor, where she decodes the fashion landscape in real time—defining sartorial moments, identifying trends before they reach ubiquity, and distilling an increasingly oversaturated market into the pieces, designers, and ideas genuinely worth knowing. (She’s currently into the Interesting Minimalism aesthetic of contemporary brands.) She has over a decade of experience covering the fashion market, and over the course of her career, which spans previous roles as Senior Shopping Writer at Vogue, Fashion Market Editor at The Cut, and Fashion and Branded Content Editor at Editorialist, she has cultivated an editorial perspective rooted in both rigorous market intelligence and an instinctive understanding of fashion’s cultural vernacular.
