I've Been Using This Effortless Styling Trick for Decades—Now, It's Fall's Top Trend
It's my secret to looking like a chic Parisian.
The first time I went to Paris as a kid, one of the biggest things that stood out to me—and has stuck with me over the years—was how differently the women wore sweaters. I saw sweaters wrapped around necks, heads, and waists, and double and triple-layered. They were multi-functional but also elegant in the most relaxed way. They added an element of texture and color while also reinforcing the image I had of Parisians: always effortlessly chic!
Now, in 2025, the fashion scene seems to be catching on to the sweater as more than a practical layer or something to throw on as an afterthought. It's now a star accessory, draped, tied, and slung low around the hips, serving form as much as function. Think: luxe cashmeres, chunky ribs, or collegiate stripes, and knits chosen specifically to clash or complement an outfit.
I especially love how a sweater tied around the waist can reshape a silhouette. It has the ability to cinch in an oversized button-down or break up the monochrome of a matching set. Thick-gauge sweaters can add volume at the hips, while a fine-gauge cashmere can add a loose and relaxed drape. I also love how a sweater worn around the waist can be the pop of color usually reserved for bags and shoes.
I found it especially useful during New York Fashion Week, when I styled a dark green, bias-cut slip skirt from TWP with a pale blue Oxford shirt from the same brand, topped off with a cashmere sweater in a soft aloe tone, knotted at the waist. The effect was a blend of laid-back polish and tonal sophistication.
That same sweater also proved its versatility, lending an autumnal edge to an otherwise summery piece, Zara’s lace-trimmed silk shorts.
