This Is My No-Fail Outfit Recipe For Looking Put-Together When I'm Feeling Cold and Lazy

There are days when getting dressed exhilarates me, and there are days I absolutely dread it. This is directly correlated with how cold it is outside: I love the possibilities that winter fashion presents, but most days, I can barely be bothered to leave the house, much less turn a look.

Still, getting dressed is a major part of my job. So, I’ve developed a no-fail outfit recipe that has me looking and feeling put-together, whether I’m working from home, out and about, or making a rare five-minute appearance at a holiday party. (I’m a Home By Nine kind of girl, if you couldn’t tell.) Forget stiff jeans and layers of sweaters warm enough to justify needing only a light jacket—my ultimate winter outfit recipe is a matching set and a long coat.

A good set takes virtually zero brain power or effort, but, when accessorized properly, really fools those around you into thinking you Got Dressed. And 99% of the time, the coat is the outfit, anyway! I know, it’s not too groundbreaking, but I promise it’s saved me on more occasions than I can count. Swap your usual loungewear for matching moments, and ensure your coat collection is strong, and you’ll never have to worry about throwing together a great look again. Well, at least until spring.

Allow me to share with you some examples, straight from a week of mirror selfies.

A cashmere set has been my absolute go-to on days when I know I’ll be bouncing between tasks at home and errands out. On this day, I was in Wrapping Presents Lockdown, and only left my apartment to restock on more wrapping paper and grab lunch with a friend. (BTW, I’m really into these faux fur slippers I got at HM.) It didn’t make sense to change out of my trusty chocolate brown Tuckernuck sweater and pant set—which is so good, I own it in navy, too—so a good coat and a bit of styling was the solution to making the look real-world appropriate.

I threw on my J. Crew coat with a cute shearling hat (mine’s old, but I just ordered this one from HM) and classic Ugg boots. Typically, I’d reserve my faux fur for evening affairs, but it ended up meshing perfectly with the soft textures of my cashmere set and cozy accessories. I even got compliments at lunch!

On a day that leans more public-facing, I’ll upgrade from a comfy set to coordinated separates that give the same vibes, but in more elevated materials. (Pro tip: Sort by color when you’re scrolling a retailer’s site, and unintentional matching sets will be revealed to you instantly.)

When I knew I’d be shifting from Work Mode to Holiday Party Mode without much time to get ready, I spent the day in the most gorgeous baby blue polo sweater with matching blue satin pants from Vince. (BTW, these perfect pants come in every color under the sun, so you can probably get them to style with a sweater you already own. I recommend going one size down.) This felt just as comfortable as a sweat set, but was infinitely easier to dress up when it was time to go out.

My coat of choice for this type of set is a more structured wool situation, and I went with chocolate brown to play on the blue. Mine is old from Banana Republic, but the brand has an incredible selection to choose fromright now. Paired with a statement handbag, some chunky earrings and a good ol’ slickback, the look was totally transformed and party-ready.
