When I was in middle school, I dreamt of being a poet. I was enthralled by the rhythmic words of Langston Hughes, and I loved how Maya Angelou could captivate my attention with every simile, alliteration, and metaphor.

So, when I recently learned that Pinterest predicted “poet-core” as one of the top fashion trends of 2026, my inner child was immediately intrigued. The niche aesthetic, according to the visual discovery engine, reflects the quintessential style of an aspiring author or bookworm—think oversized turtlenecks, vintage blazers, and messenger bags. Other literary-inspired staples, like frilly tops and plaid skirts, give the trend its soft, romantic appeal.

As it turns out, “poet-core” is more than just a social media craze—designers are embracing the intellectual style on the runways, too. During the Spring 2026 fashion week circuit, Altuzarra showcased billowing embroidered blouses and high-collar blazers. Months later, the Fall 2026 season brought brooch-adorned coats by Ralph Lauren, delicate neckties from Ulla Johnson, and leather satchels courtesy of Coach. Polished loafers, tilted berets, and chunky knits also emerged as poet-core essentials.

While many of these styles are ideal for autumn and winter, it’s never too early to shop for the upcoming season. Ahead, you’ll discover a curated edit of poet-core pieces, categorized for your convenience. Shop now, and you’ll be ready the moment temperatures drop and leaves start to fall.

Embroidered edges, perfectly arranged neckties, and charming lace trims are the romantic details that define a “poet-core” shirt. If you want to elevate your outfit rotation, ditch your flimsy tee for one of the options below. Style this look for the current season with warm-weather separates, such as a miniskirt or a pair of culottes.

Nothing says literary chic quite like tailored trousers and plaid skirts. Designed with subtle pleats and sharp silhouettes, these academic-inspired bottoms feel undeniably polished. Play into the preppy look even further with a collared top and a pair of Mary Janes. Oh, and don’t forget the most important accessory—a copy of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18.

Sharp blazers, wool-blend jackets, and trench coats can add a strong sense of structure to any look. To go full-on poet-core, opt for checkered patterns and earthy hues. If you need styling inspiration, take a glimpse at the Fall 2026 runways of Ralph Lauren and Chanel.

I’ve found that fashion’s poet-core trend is easy to embrace, mostly because I already own many of the aesthetic's key staples (like chunky knitwear). While I have plenty of thick sweaters and cardigans, I’m a firm believer that there’s no such thing as too many knits. For that reason, I have a few on my wish list, including styles from SRG, J.Crew, SNDYS, and Frame.
