A successful bag trend is more than just a new thing to buy. Driven by the right designer and properly platformed—whether in the crook of a celebrity’s arm or cameoing on an influencer's Instagram—a handbag evolves from just a fashion trend into a piece of pop culture. (We saw it this spring when silly little pouches became status symbols.) This summer’s bag trends are rife with this big-league potential; from a retro shape that’s been plucked from obscurity to actually chic work bags that'll make commuting less of a chore, they’re singular—and strong enough to carry on beyond Summer 2026.

But before we predict the future, let’s first backtrack to the Pre-Fall 2026 collections revealed last winter. At Valentino, crystal-dotted evening clutches reminded us of the power of a great going-out bag—a sentiment that will surely resonate once companies roll out summer Fridays and happy-hour Aperol spritzes become a possibility. But for days when you can’t log off early, the leather totes from Victoria Beckham (in vibrant, summery prints) and Nanushka (embroidered with zig-zag stitching) mixed personality into the professional. Oh, and those SLPs from last season stay the course, only now they're rendered in any shape, silhouette, or textile you can think of.

That's just a preview of the summer bag trends already percolating. Below, you'll find the full Summer 2026 lineup, with options you can shop and start carrying now.

Fashion isn't finished with the silly little pouch. (You may have seen other outlets using the nickname, but let the record state: Marie Claire's March coverage was first!). From Valentino's drawstring bucket bags made of chocolate brown leather to Staud's beaded purses that demand to be taken on a beach vacation, designers present more options than the satin sacks that flooded the streets of Paris last fashion month. Whether you want one with some sense of practicality (even if it's just enough space to hold a spare lip gloss) or a purse that's purely ornamental, this summer suggests that "silly" isn't quite right anymore. Perhaps "powerful" is better.

In 2026, we have progressed past the idea that the best work bags are devoid of color, fun, or flair. You're already giving eight hours of your day to your job (for some employees, that number's even higher), so why not pick a bag that makes commuting into the office easier—or, at the very least, makes a work outfit feel more personal and expressive? Designers suggested a few different options in their Pre-Fall 2026 collections, from a high-shine carry-all to a leather laptop bag rendered in a punched-up color or print.

Get your sparkle back this summer. A glittery handbag, whether it's adorned with crystal fringe and chainmail, Swarovski studs, or sewn-on gemstones, makes it even easier to do so. Plus, this summer bag trend isn't specific to shape; any shoulder bag, clutch, or tote will do—as long as it's flecked or embellished with enough shimmer to put you in party-ready mode.

For several seasons now, MC has reported on which animal print will take the place of fashion's forever favorite, leopard spots. While the feline pattern isn't fully on the outs yet—you can thank Chanel's leopard Maxi Flap Bags for keeping the print in the conversation—snakeskin, zebra, and tiger stripes certainly step into focus this summer. So, whether you're on the market for a shopper bag for farmer's market runs or an after-hours shoulder bag for date nights, skip a neutral look and use the jungle as inspiration.

Named after the closure consisting of two metal knobs that twist and snap (or kiss) shut, kisslock bags call to mind the purses you'd find in a consignment shop or your grandmother's handbag collection. Thanks to Coach's best-selling Kisslock Bags, the construction has gone from a retro relic to a ladylike trend with mainstream appeal. Joining Coach, Khaite, Lanvin, and Chanel all toyed with the vintage-inspired closure, incorporating it into leather handbags that'll work for both day and night.

While the specific trends change out every summer, this one fashion sentiment always holds true: you want to do a lot with very little. In other words, it's too hot to pull out all the stops, so you want your summer wardrobe to do the work for you. A fringed bag, whether it's trimmed with shredded raffia or comes with a tassel clipped to its zipper, is a great example of the concept in action. At Khaite, a full-fringed white purse made a maxi skirt more interesting, while Ulla Johnson's tasseled shoulder bag integrates playfulness into your everyday.
