Living in New York City, I’ve become accustomed to brutal, bone-chilling temperatures. Although braving frigid conditions has never been easy, I’ve found that my greatest weapon is my winter capsule wardrobe.

Filled with snug staples, my trusty cold-weather closet works overtime to keep me toasty in style. Most importantly, though, every item is anchored in a strong sense of practicality. I’ve got neutral-toned jackets and coats that are versatile enough to top off any winter outfit, roomy wide-leg jeans that can slide over thermal pants, and knee-high boots that are just as sleek as they are warm. My capsule collection also taps into the latest wearable trends (scroll on, and you’ll stumble upon a winter dress drenched in a viral shade of chocolate brown).

So, if you want to expand your winter capsule wardrobe, look no further. I've curated ten must-have winter pieces that will carry you through these next few icy months. You’ll find tried-and-true pieces I’ve been loving and coveted items that rank high on my wishlist, including cold-weather heritage classics like the Fair Isle sweater and ultra-versatile tailored trousers.

    Heavy-Duty Coats Jackets

Bundle up in a fuzzy teddy coat and you surely won't regret it.

When I say my closet is overflowing with outerwear, I’m not exaggerating—I barely have a hanger to spare. Although I own a range of styles, my teddy coats, wool coats, and puffer jackets take up a considerable amount of space. These hefty layers provide the most warmth during unbearable temperature dips.

While building your winter capsule wardrobe, remember to add a pair of wide-leg jeans into the mix. These roomy denim bottoms are particularly useful for layering. You can team them with a pair of skin-tight yoga pants or long underwear to keep out the cold air.

    Soft Sweaters

Nothing says winter capsule wardrobe quite like a Fair Isle sweater.

While curating your sweater lineup, opt for neutral colors that are easy to mix and match. Subdued shades of grey, brown, black, and cream are ideal in this case. However, if you’re looking to spruce things up, consider a Fair Isle sweater with a playful pattern.

Perhaps the most quintessential winter shoe is a classic boot. I’m partial to perennial styles, like knee-highs and ankle-length boots. Recently, I’ve also been gravitating toward utilitarian-inspired riding boots that flaunt an English country-style flair.
