Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte share a love for the arts, and the future Queen frequently brings her kids to experience the London cultural scene. From musicals to ballets and concerts, George, Charlotte and Louis have been treated to some world-class performances, and one West End actress revealed what happened when she met two of the Wales children in 2022.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, Zizi Strallen, who is currently starring as Glinda in the London production of Wicked, shared that the Princess of Wales made a sweet request on behalf of Charlotte when Strallen was starring as Mary Poppins on the West End.

"Kate brought Prince George and Princess Charlotte to see Mary Poppins,” the actress said. “They came backstage and she said to me: 'Would it be okay for Charlotte to have a cuddle with Mary Poppins?' I was like: 'Yes!' She wanted to hug me, which was really cute.”

Strallen added that she had another royal-adjacent visit the same day when Sir David Beckham turned up to a performance with his family. "It was a surreal day, because they came in the afternoon, and then David Beckham and Victoria came in the evening with [their children] Harper, Romeo and Cruz," she shared.

Her encounter with Princess George and Princess Charlotte wasn't the first time Strallen met royalty. In 2019, the actress had the chance to speak with Princess Kate for the first time during the Royal Variety Performance, but Strallen said her three sisters—who are all West End stars themselves—make fun of her for her reaction.

"My sisters take the mickey out of me for this, because there’s a video of me meeting Kate at the Royal Variety Performance in 2019; I'm dressed as Mary Poppins, and as she walks away, I do the most awkward little-girl wave," Strallen admitted. "I was bowled over by how tall, statuesque and stunning she was, and she and William were so normal."

Perhaps Charlotte can get another hug if she sees Wicked this holiday season.

Prince Harry is celebrating his 42nd birthday on September 15, but when it comes to a family party, don’t expect Prince William to be there. The brothers remain estranged, and as multiple experts recently told People magazine, that is unlikely to change anytime in the near future.

“It is keep calm and carry on,” royal author Simon Vigar shared when discussing William and Kate’s view on the Sussexes. “They see it as a sideshow and ancient history.”

Although the Duke of Sussex has publicly stated that he’d love to reconcile with his family, a palace source told the magazine that the Prince and Princess of Wales aren’t budging right now. “It was very hard on them, and I wouldn’t blame William for being cautious,” the insider said of their estrangement.

But Russell Myers, royal editor of the Daily Mirror and author of William and Catherine, drew a firmer line. “William’s view is clear—any relationship his father has with Harry or the Sussexes as a family is entirely up to him,” he shared. “But looking toward the future, he will have no relationship with them, in a working or private capacity whatsoever.”

However, he noted that as the future King, the Prince of Wales will have an expectation to interact with his brother in some capacity, especially now that they’re living in England again.

“William and Catherine can maintain that their focus has to be about them and their family, but there will be pressure on them about how they interact with Harry and Meghan and their family in the future,” Myers added.

Family events like Christmas at Sandringham could prove to be a sticky situation if King Charles invites the Sussex family to attend, making it difficult for William to fully avoid his brother. As royal historian Amanda Foreman noted, “At the moment, it has gone from being a hot war to a very, very cold war. But in a cold war situation, you still have to turn up to the Olympics.”

A little over an hour ago, I sat in a back conference room, FaceTiming Mariska Hargitay on her way to the airport. Naturally, she had her two Emmys—for her documentary My Mom Jayne—buckled up, like the precious cargo they are, in the seat next to her. For someone who spent the prior day hosting the 78th Annual Primetime Emmys, she looked remarkably well-rested. I can’t help but comment. “I obviously prepped my skin with my Cetaphil. It is just the most moisturizing. No matter what, no matter how tired I am, I put it on, and it plumps everything up,” the Law & Order: SVU star tells me. “It's pretty magical. I’m in a routine with it.”

Hargitay is a woman of her word. In fact, she kicked off yesterday’s hosting prep with said drugstore skincare routine (the Skin Activator Firming Lotion and Body Cream are her favorites), a 7am jacuzzi session, and “a lot” of time in an infrared sauna. But make no mistake, Hargitay started getting ready for the Emmys quite a long time ago. She booked her glam squad for the night—makeup artist Kate Synnott and hairstylist Adir Abergel—after last year’s event. “It felt like my wedding in a way because I had the most extraordinary team and felt so calm because they were on it. We knew that we wanted sort of old Hollywood glam with a little bit of an homage to my mom, but I also wanted it to just be fun and different. From the minute I accepted this invitation, we started planning,” she says.

Such intense prep resulted in the most outfits (and full glam changes) the Emmys has ever seen. I should point out that Hargitay is also the show’s first female host in 15 years. “I loved so many of my looks,” she tells me. “I think one of my favorites was the Yara black dress with the gloves. I loved the opening one—the Sophie Couture mermaid dress. It was so magical twinning with my daughter. The sparkly Dolce was just heaven. I loved them all for different reasons. I felt so good and so comfortable in them.”

The night, per Hargitay, was “exhilarating,” “joyful,” and filled with so many of her favorite people. She had Zendaya and Tom Holland as her front-row cheerleaders. “One of my favorite moments is going out there and watching Zendaya and Tom Holland waving and going, ‘You’re doing amazing.’” Backstage, she caught up with her friends Allison Janney, Noah Wiley, and Jamie Lee Curtis. “I don’t get to see them a lot, so it was really meaningful to me,” she says.

And of course, I couldn’t let this debrief end without inquiring about the fan-favorite (it’s me, I’m the fan) pre-filmed moment with Taylor Swift. “It's hard to pull something like that off and not have it be leaked,” Hargitay tells me. “Taylor was a dream and heaven. I’ve met Olivia Benson [the cat] before, and I think that’s why she was so comfortable with me. She put her paws right on me. Taylor was the perfect detective.”

Good news, though: Hargitay will be back on my TV screen as my actual favorite fictional detective very soon. Law & Order: SVU season 28 premieres on October 8. I’ll be tuning in, and in the meantime, I’m shopping all of Hargitay’s beauty staples and manifesting her hosting the Emmys once again next year.

Following high-fashion premieres in Venice, Berlin, and Cannes, 2026's film festival circuit rolled out the red carpet in Toronto. Beginning on September 10, A-list appearances from Cynthia Erivo, Ayo Edebiri, and Penélope Cruz proved that Canada has just as much of a celebrity style scene as its European counterparts. In fact, the 2026 Toronto Film Festival is setting lofty standards for the New York Film Festival later this month.

The opening day of New York Fashion Week happened to coincide with Toronto's initial star-studded screenings. So, some of the festival's best fashion moments were (unintentionally) swept under the rug. But while VIPs found their front-row seats at spring runway shows from Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Carolina Herrera, Marie Claire kept one eye on the red carpet rotation up north.

The step-and-repeats started strong, thanks to early arrivals from Edebiri, Chase Infiniti, and Sarah Paulson. Edebiri, for one, stole the show at the Clarissa premiere, wearing Chanel's Fall 2026 Couture take on the black-and-white red carpet trend. Meanwhile, Infiniti's custom Louis Vuitton dress proved no color (not even mossy chartreuse) is too "out there" for her. Half a day later, Paulson played with proportions in a bubble-shaped gown by Danielle Frankel, the New York-based designer behind Jordyn Woods's wedding dress.

Queen Elizabeth’s love of horses was legendary. Whether it was going out for a ride, breeding horses or watching the races, there was nothing that she enjoyed more—and her passion for equestrian pursuits led her to one unlikely friendship.

As a California cowboy, horse trainer Monty Roberts never expected to become friends with the late Queen, but as his daughter Debbie Loucks tells Marie Claire, the two had much more in common than anyone expected.

Roberts died on July 31 after a career that transformed the equestrian industry, and his non-violent horse training methods attracted the interest of Queen Elizabeth, who invited him to Windsor Castle in 1989. Traditionally, horses were broken in and saddled by using force, but Roberts relied on body language and communication instead.

Loucks recalls her father admitting that the “only time” he felt extremely nervous was when he did his first demonstration for Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother. Roberts successfully saddled the horse, and Loucks shares how the Queen Mother had “tears forming in her eyes” when she greeted him.

“The [late] Queen came down right after the Queen Mum and said, ‘You know, that was incredible. Do another, do more,’” Loucks shares. And more is what Roberts did, staying on for a week to train even the largest ceremonial horses without using any force.

The two struck up a friendship that lasted three decades, and Loucks shares that her father was impressed by the depth of Queen Elizabeth’s knowledge of the equestrian world. “I think he was amazed by her horsemanship, amazed at how good she was at several things,” Loucks says. “She could really eyeball a horse, you know, she could really read a horse and she had an eye for confirmation. She had an eye for talent.”

The late Queen would often speak to Roberts on the phone, and he was one of the few people she’d take a call from no matter where she was—even if it was in a government meeting.

It was the late Queen who encouraged Roberts to write his first book, The Man Who Listens to Horses, and she was instrumental in getting his documentary, Shy Boy: The Horse That Came in from the Wild, produced.

“She was like, ‘Videos go away. Books are forever. You have to do a book,’” Loucks recalls. “She walked him into the publishers, said there must be a book. She went to the BBC, said there must be a documentary and that's how Shy Boy came about. You know, she was orchestrating this forward. She believed it.”

Roberts went on to write a number of other books on horsemanship, and his friendship with Queen Elizabeth was chronicled in the documentary The Cowboy and The Queen. In 2011, the late Queen honored Roberts as an honorary Member of the Royal Victorian Order.

Loucks recalls how Queen Elizabeth had a knack for naming not only horses, but all kinds of animals. “He always told little stories about how she named different animals and how they fulfilled that,” Loucks tells Marie Claire. Roberts had many deer living on his property, and he “used to tell deer stories all the time” to Queen Elizabeth, who loved exchanging her own tales with Monty.

After bottle-feeding a baby deer back to health, Roberts asked the late Queen for her advice on a name. “Dad finally went to her and said, ‘I've got to name the little baby deer and it's just so sweet, and here's some photos and you know, what do you think?” Loucks shares. “And she said, ‘Benediction. I’d name him Benediction.’”

When Roberts told Queen Elizabeth it was “a big name for a little deer,” Queen Elizabeth replied, "Well, you know, you Americans, you turn things into gangster names. You can call him Benny if you want to,” Loucks says with a laugh. “But that’s the other thing he loved about her, her sense of humor."

Today, Loucks is carrying on her father's legacy at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center, located at the California Horse Center in the Santa Ynez Valley. As well as offering online and in-person courses, the center "is a grand example of the most progressive thoughts in keeping horses healthy," Loucks says. "I'll use Dad's voice as a megaphone for that," she adds, noting that her late father's non-violent methods will be "the future for horses."

"Dad believes that as strongly as I do," Loucks shares.

Sophie added a wide gold "Africa" ring by Giulia Barela Jewelry along with a floral-themed necklace and ring by the designer and her ever-present Asprey oak leaf bracelet.

Preventable blindness is one of the major causes the Duchess of Edinburgh supports, and she wore her green and purple look to the the Orbis Eye Health reception in Zambia's capital, Lusaka, before changing into a second colorful dress for her events on Tuesday.

Sophie wore a white Soler London maxi dress with a rainbow pattern of stripes, flowers and abstract shapes for a busy day of events on September 15. The duchess paired her dress with the same Penelope Chilvers shoes as she spoke with female business leaders in Zambia, visited a jewelry workshop and met with survivors of gender-based violence.

Prince Harry is celebrating his 42nd birthday on Tuesday, September 15, and wife Meghan Markle posted a special Instagram Reel to pay tribute to her husband. Along with celebrating the Duke of Sussex’s big day, the video revealed some new glimpses at the family’s life in England after they moved back to the U.K. in August—and Princess Lilibet managed to steal the show with her sweet style.

“He’s simply the best. Happy birthday, my love ❤️,” she captioned the video, which was set to a cover of Tina Turner's “Simply the Best.” In the Reel, Lilibet, 5, and big brother Prince Archie, 7, join dad Harry for some outdoor fun, but most of the photos feature the princess, including a snapshot of her wearing a headband that pays homage to one of mom Meghan’s favorite activities.

In one photo, Meghan and Lilibet ride in a golf cart as Harry leans in and gives his daughter—who is wearing a bedazzled headband—a kiss. Lili’s knotted white headband features gemstones and Mahjong tiles, and it seems she shares Meghan’s love of the classic Chinese game.

Mahjong dates back to the 1800s and has experienced a rise in popularity in the United States in recent years, with the Duchess of Sussex having regularly gathered with friends to play in California. According to Hello! magazine, Meghan is now teaching Lilibet how to play the complex tile game.

Prince Harry’s birthday video also featured glimpses at some of the family’s other hobbies, including a photo of the duke skiing with Princess Lilibet and a snap of him driving an ATV with Archie, Lilibet, and a Union-Jack themed Marks and Spencer bag in tow as their dog, Pula, runs behind.

The video comes a day after Hello! revealed that Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have left their new school in England after just two days.

A spokesperson for the family shared that traffic and logistical concerns with the school made it difficult for their security team to get the kids there safely, with a representative stating, “The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements."

The children are now settling into a different school that better suits their needs, with the outlet reporting that "Prince Harry was spotted settling Lili into reception and the couple have been added to the parents' whatsapp groups."

Woodley stacked a graphic tee over the Balenciaga Couture she wore to the 2026 Emmys; Pidgeon channeled her Love Story character, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, in a less-is-more little black dress; and Gerber made the night's debut in a sculptural skirt set.

On September 14, over a decade after Dakota Fanning made her Emmy Awards debut, she returned to the red carpet in a black-and-white dress. If only the actor's nine-year-old self could see her now: Not only was Fanning's All Her Fault performance nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category, but she also delivered one of her best Emmy fashion moments yet.

One hour before the host Mariska Hargitay delivered her opening monologue, Fanning posed for photographers in a strapless black-and-white dress from Carolina Herrera's Resort 2027 collection. (The look revived the black-and-white red carpet trend endorsed by Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Charli xcx, and more early in the year.)

Its glossy corset boasted blink-and-you'll-miss-it waist pleating before turning white. Unlike her sister Elle Fanning's carpet-sweeping Ralph Lauren slip, the hem of her drop-waist skirt stopped at tea-length level, revealing criss-cross sandals beneath the black petticoat.

Her stylist, Samantha McMillen (the same creative behind Elle's Emmys look), took creative liberties in the accessory department. McMillen and Dakota traded the original pearl collar-style choker for a $35,000 lab-grown diamond necklace from Swarovski. The sparkler featured a trio of octagon-cut gemstones, bringing the total to 19.46 carats. The Emmy nominee kept the rest of her bling simple, styling a slim tennis bracelet with a single diamond ring.

Fanning's red carpet fashion has come a long way since her first Emmy Awards. At just nine years old, the star of Steven Spielberg Presents Taken (which won the 2003 Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries) stole the show in a bubblegum-pink-and-plum midi dress. Thanks to her bigger-than-the-trophy bow, Mary Janes, and bedazzled top-handle tote, Fanning would've won the Most Adorable Award, too, if the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences dished those out.

While her career certainly didn't slow down (in 2005, she played Tom Cruise's daughter in War of the Worlds, and in 2009, she voiced Coraline), Fanning didn't return to the Emmys until 2018. There's no better way to say goodbye to a character than with one final Award Season nomination. At the 2026 Emmy Awards, Zendaya could win her third trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Rue in Euphoria. But because she's a red carpet regular, Zendaya already won the second her semi-sheer dress touched down at the ceremony in L.A.

After dressing Ariana Grande on the Eternal Sunshine tour and Naomi Osaka at the 2026 US Open, stylist Law Roach reunited with Zendaya. Beige illusion mesh served as the foundation of Z's plunging, carpet-sweeping style, crafted just for her by Prada. (How fitting, given the Prada Beauty ambassador jetted to the Emmys from the brand's New York Fashion Week pop-up.) From there, every square inch of the almost invisible base was dripping in crystals of all shapes and sizes. Zoom in to see that some of the sparklers boasted button backs, embellishments that perfectly complemented her Jessica McCormack engagement ring.

She frosted herself in diamonds and pearls from Mikimoto, the Japanese jewelry brand beloved by Emily Blunt, Jenna Ortega, Ariana Grande, and more for star-studded Hollywood soirées. "I loved the idea of taking something as timeless as Mikimoto pearls and making them feel fresh, modern and young," Roach said in the press release. "There’s an elegance to pearls that will always be classic, but the way Zendaya wears them tonight feels completely of the moment.”

To finish her Emmys ensemble, Roach wore a Rolex Lady Datejust Watch and shade-matched the gown's mesh to pointy satin pumps from Casadei (shockingly, she left her Christian Louboutins at home). Zendaya's Emmy-winning streak has been one to watch: Before tonight, she was nominated—and won—twice for Euphoria. If only the Television Academy were dishing out Best-Dressed titles, too. The actor's debut Emmys dress in 2019—a custom Vera Wang gown—deserved applause for its sheer bustier, liquid-looking satin skirt, and glamorous emerald green shade.

Believe it or not, back then, Z's shade-matched stilettos—which emerged from beneath a thigh-high slit—were from the American shoe designer Brian Atwood, not Louboutin. To accessorize the strapless style, Cartier loaned her a diamond cuff bracelet and Panthère drop earrings, adorned with emeralds to complement the color of her dress.

One hour after the red carpet opened, all eyes went to her strapless mermaid style, sculpted from hundreds of metallic gold beads. Photos of the Emmy nominee's side profile showcased the beadwork's circular waist detail. The hemline stretched well beyond the carpet, concealing her shoes.

Gomez frosted herself in Tiffany & Co., the storied brand behind her wedding day bling. It's a family affair at the 2026 Emmy Awards. While Meryl Streep hasn't walked the red carpet yet (Only Murders In the Building scored five nominations, so the Emmy winner could surprise everyone any second now). But her daughters, Grace Gummer and Louisa Jacobson, are holding down the fort in red carpet looks that would make their mom proud.

Jacobson was the first of the family to arrive at L.A.'s Peacock Theater on September 14. The actor made her Emmys debut for The Gilded Age, an Emmy-winning series that earned another eight nominations this year. Edward Bowleg III, the stylist that dressed her for the 2026 Met Gala and the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, embraced Jacobson's masculine side with a black-and-white suit by Tom Ford, featuring a cropped blazer and tailored extra-long trousers. The jacket's white trim and asymmetrical scarf replaced a traditional Oxford shirt, a sleek switch that highlighted its padded shoulders and silk lapels.

To finish her first Emmys outfit, Jacobson accessorized with pointy pumps (blink and you'll miss them beneath her shoe-shielding hems), a diamond brooch by Tiffany & Co., and matching spiky earring studs.

Minutes after Jacobson warmed up the red carpet, Gummer picked up where her younger sister left off in black-tie attire by Dior. The Love Story star's strapless column gown channeled the nominated TV show's minimalist '90s style. But between the 3-D floral appliqués, the bubbled bodice, and the pleated texture, Dior's Jonathan Anderson gave the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy-coded silhouette a red carpet-ready twist.

It's been a minute since Gummer and Jacobson have reunited on the red carpet; three years, to be exact. Back in December 2023, the sisters and their Oscar-winning mother coordinated all-black attire for the third annual Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Gala. Clearly, an affinity for colorless looks runs in the family. While Streep and Gummer kept it classic in long-sleeve, high-neck dresses, Jacobson's carpet-sweeping style boasted metallic silver embroidery.

Both Gummer and Jacobson presumably secured their seats inside Peacock Theater by now, but all hope for a sister photo op isn't lost. Perhaps they'll end the evening at the same star-studded after-party. If anyone can convince Streep to get in on the fun, it's her daughters.

Grace Kelly died 44 years ago, succumbing to injuries from a car crash on September 14, 1982. Although her life was cut short at just 52, Princess Grace of Monaco’s legacy lives on, both in terms of her classic Hollywood movies and her fashion. Kelly’s jewels might not have always been the flashiest, but she focused on “thoughtful, versatile” pieces, as Justin Daughters, managing director at vintage and antique jewelry retailer Berganza, tells Marie Claire.

“It says a great deal about a person's style that, 44 years after her death, we're still discussing Grace Kelly's jewelry in the present tense,” Daughters says. Whether it was her original engagement ring or a simple strand of pearls, the princess didn’t rely on “the biggest or the most fashionable option available,” he notes.

“In many ways, Grace Kelly understood quiet luxury long before we had a name for it,” the jewelry pro says, adding that she leaned toward "restraint, quality and pieces chosen with a genuinely considered eye.”

When Prince Rainier III of Monaco proposed to the Hollywood star in 1956, he gave her a relatively restrained eternity band featuring rubies and diamonds to represent Monaco’s flag. It was quickly upgraded to her famous 10.48-carat ring, the style she famously wore in her last movie, High Society.

“Emerald cuts are especially appealing because their appeal comes from the proportions of the cut and high-quality stones themselves, not the amount of sparkle they have,” Daughters says of the ring. “This is exactly the type of design that ages well because it does not depend on trends that are going to fade away soon.”

But even though her second engagement ring was enormous to say the least, Daughters says the Cartier design still managed to feel effortless.

“Grace had an understanding that good jewelry should enhance the wearer and not dominate,” he shares. “She could wear a significant piece without allowing it to become the entire focus of an outfit, which is a difficult balance to achieve and one that still feels incredibly sophisticated today.”

Princess Grace didn’t wear a tiara for her wedding day, instead opting to wear an intricate lace Juliet cap with her veil. But she did wear several tiaras over the years, including one that she received as a wedding gift: the Bains de Mer Tiara.

"The Cartier piece was designed with diamonds and ruby cabochon floral motifs, with elements that could be detached and worn afterwards as individual brooches,” Daughters says of the design, which, like her first engagement ring, represented Monaco’s national colors.

“That kind of thoughtful, versatile design is exactly what antique jewelry specialists and collectors continue to value,” Daughters says. “It demonstrates that even an important ceremonial piece can be designed with longevity and wearability in mind.”

Because of the timeless aspect of most of her pieces, Princess Grace’s jewelry has continued to stand the test of time. “What connects Grace Kelly’s jewelry and, I believe, makes her jewelry collection resonate so much with people even today, is that everything she wears seems to be carefully selected rather than simply accumulated,” Daughters says.

Last weekend, when fall fashion reclaimed its rightful place in my closet, I realized I was not ready to put away the summer’s leading—and coolest!—color combination: red-and-purple. Nor do I need to: Recent runway shows and celebrities, ranging from Dua Lipa to Prada, convinced me to skip the “see you next year” pile and save myself from another September of styling beige, black, and white on repeat.

Neighboring shades on the color wheel create some of fashion’s most interesting combinations. Nowhere was that more clear than on the Spring/Summer 2026 circuit, where Carolina Herrera, Stella McCartney, and Prada taste-tested cherry and grape together. More recently, Valentino, Chanel, Lanvin, Mugler, and CFCL cemented the pairing’s spot in my regular autumn rotation, but not before VIPs like Lipa, Zoey Deutch, and Lupita Nyong’o proved the fresh-from-the-runway pigments shine on the street style scene, too.

Sure, red-and-purple looks might secure finger claps at New York Fashion Week, but what about my midwestern stomping grounds? While my colleagues are at NYFW this week, I tested the pairing in the land of (sometimes boring) black-and-white dressing.

The Red-and-Purple Color Combination Trend

At the beginning of 2026, I added “experiment with color combinations” to the top of my fashion resolutions list. I hoped the reminder would widen my wardrobe to include some of the season's biggest color pairings like pale pink-and-tangerine orange, cobalt blue-and-butter yellow, and strawberry red-and-purple. Thanks to endorsements from my favorite designers and fashion girls alike, my makeshift style resolution of sorts worked.

Wearing red and purple is nowhere near a novel outfit formula: Decades after Princess Diana endorsed the color combination, it resurfaced—via a crimson wrap coat and violet maternity dress—in Meghan Markle’s circa-2019 royal closet. That same year, Victoria Beckham pulled off a lavender-and-tomato look, courtesy of her London-based fashion brand. By 2022, the creative director proved the coupling is surprisingly Posh Spice-coded, wearing a cashmere grape sweater with fire hydrant red leather pants at Saint Laurent’s Paris Fashion Week show.

Fast forward to 2026, and red-and-purple outfits sprouted everywhere from the Cannes Film Festival to New York City. Back in May, Lipa accessorized an eggplant-tinted dress from Ferragamo’s Fall 2026 collection with the Hug East-West handbag in “Flame Red” for the film festival in the South of France. Less than a month later, Deutch made herself a purple-and-red sandwich, featuring a royal purple cardigan and tomato red trousers, both from High Sport, while promoting her newest film in the Big Apple.

How I Style It

For a look that’s as effortless as black-and-white that I’m accustomed to, I stacked a purple piece on top of red bottoms à la Deutch. I’m really loving lavender as a summer-to-fall hue, so I shade-matched the striped cardigan around my waist to a short-sleeve cashmere sweater from Anthropologie. Thick tomato-red bands smoothed the contrast between the light lavender and the asymmetrical midi skirt from Old Navy. (I’m planning on pairing the two-sweater set with red denim fresh from Deutch’s press tour wardrobe, too.)

I completed the look with a suede top-handle tote by Mark & Graham in an almost identical color to the skirt and my beloved Gap barn jacket. I grounded my otherwise out-there look with the coat’s espresso-brown corduroy collar and matching Madewell loafers.

Inspired by Lipa’s more elevated maximalist look in Cannes, I wanted to see if these It colors could pass the wedding guest test. (The pop star’s Ferragamo ‘fit would’ve promised her the best-dressed crown at any ceremony.) This time around, a watermelon-squeezed, drop-waist dress from Hutch served as my foundation shade, one that earned the endorsement of my cousin, whose wedding I’ll be attending next month. Not only did the bride-to-be give an additional thumbs-up to my plum bucket bag by Cuyana (an A-lister-beloved brand), but the smooth leather shade is also surprisingly close to the colors of her wedding bouquet.

While Lipa saved room for heeled mules in her French Riviera suitcase, I’m putting comfort—and the high-vamp flats trend—first in ballerinas by J.Crew. They’re the same tomato-red tint as the Grammy winner’s accessories, except more dance-floor-friendly and under $150. However, I could also get away with Katie Holmes’s recent take on the red-and-purple trend (square-toe block heels at August’s Michael Kors soirée) and walk away just as blister-free.

Just as I suspected, this color combination trend isn’t reserved for summer styling. Thanks to today’s trendsetters (and their “not-just-neutrals” approach to fall fashion), red-and-purple is the new black-and-white in my cold-weather wardrobe.

Bella Hadid missed Coach's Spring/Summer 2027 runway show at New York Fashion Week, but that didn't stop her from celebrating the brand's 85th birthday. The supermodel waited until September 14 (the fifth day of NYFW) to deliver her present: Hadid's everyday bag endorsement of the Coachtopia Alter/Ego.

It's been two years since Hadid's latest NYFW appearance (her horse show was the Spring 2024 circuit's unofficial grand finale), but her sister, Gigi Hadid, has been holding down the fort. Last week, the Guest In Residence founder opened Tommy Hilfiger's spring fashion show in the street style scene's leading color trend.

The Ôrebella founder announced her arrival in New York in a perfect-for-fall layered look, featuring a white T-shirt as her foundation, the flannel shirt trend, and a brown suede jacket. She paired the trio of tops with cuffed dark denim, a tomboy trucker hat, white socks slipped into Uggs' Classic Ultra Mini Boots, and Coach's slouchy shoulder bag.

Both the boots and the bag felt especially on-brand for Hadid, but let's start by breaking down the patchwork shoulder piece, shall we?

Saving her Coach Brooklyn, Chelsea, Empire Carryall, and Tabby Bags for another day, Hadid debuted the newest addition to her ever-expanding collection. The New York-based brand's sustainable line, called Coachtopia, designed the single-strap style out of "soft leather and suede scraps left over from the making of Coach bags."

The $295 zip-top tote's mismatched exterior makes it one of the most unique purses in Hadid's closet, second only to the Alter/Ego Hobo Bag crafted from the same recycled checkerboard leather. She showcased the latter back in Oct. 2024.

As for her boots, it's no surprise that Hadid wore Uggs while traveling to NYC. Over the years, she has worn the brand's shearling-lined shoes inside too many airports to count.

Much like her Coach Alter/Ego, the Classic Ultra Mini seems to be a newcomer to her shoe rack. She has previously styled the Classic Ultra Mini Platform, the calf-length Classic II Boot, and the Classic Micro. Hadid stayed loyal to the brand's signature chestnut shades.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have pulled Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet out of their new school in England after just two days, according to a new report from Hello! magazine. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the choice to switch schools due to “heavy traffic” and security concerns getting there, per a representative for the Sussexes and a friend of the couple.

The Sussex family moved from Montecito, California to an undisclosed home in England on August 26, and plan to stay in the U.K. for an extended period of time as their children attend a local school. While the family didn't announce where Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, would be educated, the children have already moved to a new school.

“It’s a real shame, because they absolutely adored the school, the kids and their parents,” a friend of Prince Harry and Meghan's told the media outlet, describing the educational facility as “perfect for them in every way.”

“They really wanted to make it work, but they had to make a difficult decision based on the fact that the team couldn’t make the school run operationally secure," the source added.

Royal editor Emily Nash of Hello! wrote that the long distance between the Sussex family's home and the school, along with "heavy traffic," contributed to their "small, private security team" being challenged on the school run. "One incident made it difficult for their vehicles to stay in convoy, which raised further concerns," she added.

A representative for the duke and duchess noted that the unnamed school isn't to blame, adding that Archie and Lilibet received "exceptional care" during their short time there.

“The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements," the rep noted.

According to Hello!, Archie and Lilibet attended a "taster session" at a new school on Monday, September 14. "Prince Harry was spotted settling Lili into reception and the couple have been added to the parents' whatsapp groups," Nash reported.

Meanwhile, Meghan shared a glimpse at their new life in England on Sunday, posting an Instagram Reel featuring scenes of them fishing, riding bikes and taking walks in the woods as the duchess splashed in muddy puddles.

Katie Holmes experiences New York Fashion Week like a fashion editor, zooming from runway shows to VIP parties with just enough time to change outfits. Much like Marie Claire's editor-in-chief, Nikki Ogunnaike, Holmes carved out time in her NYFW calendar for the 2026 US Open. On September 13, Holmes channeled a fresh-from-fashion-week editor—in the trousers-and-loafers uniform—at the men's singles championship match.

Before Ben Shelton competed against Alexander Zverev on tennis's biggest stage, Holmes and her rumored boyfriend, Jason Bard Yarmosky, arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium in matching black-and-white looks. Opposite Yarmosky's button-down and barrel-leg bottoms, the Dawson's Creek star styled an ivory crewneck sweater with cropped black trousers and Gucci horsebit Jordaan Loafers.

Following her divorce from King Charles, Diana's relationship with the Royal Family reportedly wasn't always straightforward. And according to one royal expert, Queen Elizabeth became "furious" with the former Princess of Wales after one particular conversation.

According to respected royal author and editor Ingrid Seward, the allegedly tense conversation between Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, and Princess Diana took place on February 28, 1996, before the divorce was finalized.

"The discussions were supposed to be private, but immediately afterwards Diana issued a statement saying she had agreed to the divorce, that she would continue to be involved in all decisions pertaining to William and Harry—and that under pressure she would be giving up her HRH [title]," Seward shared in the Daily Mail.

According to Seward, "The Queen was furious at Diana leaking details of their private conversation." As a result, the monarch decided to share her own version of events with the public.

"She immediately countered with a statement of her own," Seward noted. "Her press secretary, Charles Anson, announced: 'The decision to drop the title is the princess's and the princess's alone. It is wrong that [Queen Elizabeth] or [King Charles] asked her. I can state categorically it is not true."

The statement continued, "The palace does not say something specific on a point like this unless we are absolutely sure of the facts."

In spite of Queen Elizabeth's statement, Princess Diana "continued to insist she had been pressured into relinquishing her title," Seward wrote.

Unfortunately, this appears to have been one instance in which Diana and Elizabeth couldn't agree.

Following Queen Elizabeth II's death on September 8, 2022, King Charles became the new monarch of the United Kingdom. His coronation took place on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London—a fact that royal fans are all too aware of. So when an "embarrassing" mistake transpired online regarding The King's status, fans of the Royal Family stepped in to help make the necessary changes.

The problem occurred when The Royal Collection Trust posted a portrait of King Charles on Instagram, along with the caption, "On this day in 2023, King Charles III acceded the throne."

The caption continued, "Painted to mark the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, this portrait continues a long tradition of coronation state portraits that spans centuries. It was commissioned by The King and painted by Peter Kuhfeld over the course of a year."

"The portrait now hangs in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace," the caption explained. "The palace is open for self-guided tours until September 27, 2026."

Of course, eagle-eyed royal fans were quick to spot the mistake in The Royal Collection Trust's Instagram caption. While Charles's coronation did take place in 2023, he officially acceded the throne in September 2022 upon his mother's death.

As the portrait was posted on September 8, 2026, one can only assume that the organization meant to reference King Charles's actual ascendance to the throne, rather than his coronation date.

After one poster pointed out that Charles acceded the throne in 2022—not in 2023—another person responded, "You'd think they'd know!"

Once the caption was updated, another commenter shared, "[T]hey wrote: on this day in 2023 but they fixed." Along with a laughing emoji, one royal fan replied, "I saw that they edited but was wondering from what. Dear me. How embarrassing."

Another fan said, "Surely they were thinking of the coronation…"

Luckily, royal fans were on hand to make sure facts about King Charles's monarch status weren't incorrectly shared.

Now that Prince George has officially started attending Eton College, royal fans are wondering where his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, will go to school. And according to one royal expert, Princess Kate and Prince William have used a fairly foolproof method to decide where each of their kids will be educated.

During an appearance on Hello! magazine's "A Right Royal Podcast," the publication's royal editor, Emily Nash, weighed in on the Prince and Princess of Wales's schooling decisions.

"I think what William and Catherine have done is they've chosen the school that is right for [Prince George], and they'll choose the school that's right for each individual child," Nash shared. "This is not like a one size fits all, is it?"

Nash continued, "They know better than anyone else what [Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis's] personalities are like, what their interests are like, which sports are best provided for at which school. And we know they've done so much research."

As for Kate and William's decision to send Prince George to Eton College—his father's alma mater—Nash explained, "It really does show that George is a smart kid because I don't think you get into Eton anymore just off the back of who your parents are."

The royal expert said, "I genuinely don't think that in this day and age, they could put someone into Eton and get them through in the way that may have happened in previous generations."

Prince George's mom, Princess Kate, has always prioritized education in her work and charitable endeavors, so she was especially well-placed to weigh in on the royal children's futures.

"Catherine is on it in terms of [George's] education," Nash noted. "I don't think they would put him in a place where he would feel he wasn't able to keep up."

Currently, where Louis and Charlotte will attend high school remains unclear.

Now that Prince George has started his first year at Eton College, life for Prince William and Princess Kate looks a bit different. George, 13, is boarding full-time at Eton, leaving an empty seat at the table in his Forest Lodge home. While Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are still attending nearby Lambrook School in Berkshire, George now has a taste of independence, just like his father had at Eton—and the future King just might take part in one tradition Prince William had with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

The late Queen would often invite William to Windsor Castle when he was a student at Eton College, since the boarding school is located just a stone’s throw away from Windsor. The Prince of Wales has shared fond memories of those times with his grandmother, and King Charles’s former butler, Grant Harrold, says that Prince George could now step into the same routine.

Speaking to Select Car Leasing, Harrold says that The King is a “caring” grandfather and will want to give George the best possible preparation for when he steps into his royal future.

“I imagine the King will possibly try to recreate the afternoon tea routine that his mother and son shared with his grandson,” Harrold shares. “Whenever he is in Windsor, I imagine he will make an effort to see George. He will want to know how he’s getting on at school, and also to start preparing him for the future.”

Harrold adds that The King, who was sent off to boarding school in Scotland as a child, is in a unique position to give advice to Prince George.

“He understands better than anyone the challenges George will face as the future King going through the difficult teenage years,” Harrold says. “He’s a very caring man and he loves his family dearly, so he will want to help his grandson in any way he can—even if that’s just being an understanding ear.”

Another benefit of going to Eton is the close proximity to the Wales family's home, Forest Lodge, which is just about 15 minutes away from the historic boarding school.

“William and Kate are very family-orientated and they would want their children to be close to them,” Harrold notes. “I don’t think they would have wanted George to go to a boarding school at the other end of the country, which is of course what Prince Philip did with King Charles.”

Alongside their roles as Royal Family members, Prince William and Princess Kate have been attempting to give their children a relatively normal life. And in Europe, multiple royals are seemingly determined to experience life outside of the constraints of their official titles.

One such royal is Princess Leonor of Spain, who just so happens to be the heir to the Spanish throne.

Per the Daily Mail, "Despite her key position in the Spanish Royal Family, the daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia is set to be deliberately 'treated like a normal' student during her university tenure."

The university's rector told the outlet, "The royal household has made it very easy for us. Nothing changes."

Notably, according to the newspaper, "Despite their key roles in the Spanish monarchy, both Leonor and [her sister] Sofia have been deliberately kept out of the limelight—with a particular emphasis placed on their education by their parents."

In this author-curated rendition, R.F. Kuang—the scholar and best-selling author behind Babel, Katabasis, and Yellowface—shares which novels about language-learning inspired her seventh novel, Taipei Story.

R.F. Kuang’s fascination with language has made her a literary superstar. Her bestselling works—from historical epics with complex magic systems to a biting contemporary satire of the publishing industry—explore the ways words can be warped and co-opted in search of power, fame, and influence. For her latest release, Kuang turned to a place that can strike fear in the heart of any linguaphile: the immersion classroom.

Taipei Story, Kuang’s first contemporary coming-of-age novel, follows Yale student Lily through her summer attending an intensive Chinese-language program in Taiwan. The first half of the book is a travelogue of fumbling miscommunications inside and outside of the classroom, as Lily navigates inscrutable teachers, roommate woes, and that diasporic dissonance of feeling like an outsider in her ancestral homeland. In a way, the fictional Lily is walking in her creator’s footsteps; to write the novel, Kuang pulled from her own study-abroad era in the summer of 2023.

“While I went to many of the same places and did many of the same activities as Lily did, her reactions and interpretations are wholly invented,” Kuang tells Marie Claire. “I wanted to explore loss and alienation from the perspective of someone much younger and worse equipped to deal with it all.”

Though Kuang is best known for revitalizing the “dark academia” novel, with its innately gifted protagonists, the Cambridge, Oxford, and soon-to-be Yale graduate embraced the natural conflict that misapprehension brings for her latest novel. “You don’t speak the language. You keep blundering and violating cultural norms,” she describes. “You don’t know the right way to interpret anything you’re witnessing. All of that friction is hilarious.”

Kuang counts these types of novels, ones that explore the gap between intention and comprehension that foreign-language speakers face, among her biggest literary influences. The big question of Taipei Story is whether Lily will ever cross that chasm. When her grandfather passes away in the middle of her program—as Kuang’s did in real life—she has to parse through her family’s unspoken history without the complete fluency she’d been chasing. The lesson that comes from this struggle is one that Kuang would give to her young self today.

“Miscommunication is inevitable, and so is falling flat on your face,” she says. “The only way to get better at a language is to make mistakes over and over again, so just put yourself out on a limb and learn to laugh at yourself.”

To coincide with the release of her highly anticipated new book on September 8, we asked the author to share the books about miscommunication among language-learners that inspired Taipei Story, from globetrotting fiction to campus novels.

When Princess Diana died in a 1997 car crash, she was with her then-boyfriend Dodi Fayed, who was also killed in the tragic accident. But less than two months before her death, Diana was dating another man, heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. Their under-the-radar relationship provided a dose of normalcy for the princess, and during an inquest into her death, Khan shared some rare insights into their time together.

In Edward White’s book Dianaworld: An Obsession, the author notes that Diana’s involvement with Khan “was more mundane, uneventful, and enriching than any that she ever had.” The couple met when she was visiting a friend’s husband in a London hospital, and for nearly two years, they carried on with their “discreet” relationship. But “Khan had no taste for the glare of global publicity in which Diana lived,” as White wrote.

According to the surgeon, the late princess broke up with him just over a month before her August 1997 death, as he wrote in a statement shared during the official death inquest. Diana had recently returned from a vacation with Dodi and his father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, and although Khan wasn’t aware of her connection to Dodi, he worried about her association with Al-Fayed's family.

"I remember saying to her at the time, 'You are dead,' meaning her reputation was dead,” Khan stated. “I said this because I was sure that it was someone from Mohamed Al Fayed's group and that was how I felt about anyone involved with him."

Even then, the Harrods owner—who was posthumously accused of sexually assaulting hundreds of women after a 2024 documentary aired—had a questionable reputation. However, Khan said that because of Dodi’s family wealth and connections, he felt that Princess Diana “finally realized that Al Fayed could give her all the things I could not.”
