Since her early editor days, the Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nikki Ogunnaike has enlisted one "low-effort, high-impact styling trick" every New York Fashion Week: "party pants" paired with a plain-Jane top. Fast forward to Spring 2027's season, and celebratory statement skirts are the new failsafe style on every editor's Fashion Month mood board.

Patterned, textured, and shade-drenched skirts have popped up on celebrities, fashion insiders, and showgoers alike. Where typical trousers or grab-and-go shirtdresses might've previously filled the NYFW seats, anything-but-neutral skirts sat in the front rows.

Skirts in every length, from mini to maxi, came in polka dot, plaid, and floral prints, making guests unmissable as they zoomed from one fashion event to another. Even Ogunnaike tapped into the trend, tucking a deep plum T-shirt into a tomato-red leather skirt before the Tibi showcase on Sept. 12.

Much like Ogunnaike, NYFW guests grounded the "out-there" skirt trend with everyday basics on top. Think: neutral T-shirts, simple sweaters, billowy button-downs, and even graphic tees. That way, party skirts could embrace their "life of the party" persona without competing with another maximalist must-have.

Apart from occasional pops of color or split-toe Tabi sightings, fashion people wore their daring bottoms with relatively understated shoes, too. On the off chance a showgoer doubled up on prints, textures, or tints, classic silhouettes (heeled ballet flats, knee-high boots, or Mary Janes) restrained the bold look.

Decorative elements ranged from colored leather and 3-D embellishments to fringe, feathers, and beads. There wasn't a leading length among fashion editors and enthusiasts either. While midi skirts exuded more "I mean business" energy, sidewalk-sweeping maxis brought a boho-chic charm to the cityscape, and minis were the ultimate party pieces (great for the after-hours circuit).

The trend caught the most attention in the front row. At Carolina Herrera, Camila Mendes tucked a timeless black turtleneck into a leopard-print maxi (matched to a clutch in the same pattern). For the '60s-inspired fit, the Riverdale actor opted out of "party" accessories, slipping on black kitten heels, a matching headband, and pearl earrings instead.

Minutes later, Jasmine Tookes and Pamela Anderson arrived at the Carolina Herrera soirée in floral-print skirts. First, the supermodel shade-matched her tomato-red turtleneck to the calla lilies on her asymmetrical pencil skirt. Meanwhile, Anderson wore the same top with an embroidered midi that looked more like a flourishing garden than a piece of clothing.

That's not to say the statement skirt trend was confined to the pre- and post-show style crowds. Inside Lincoln Center, for its spring 2027 collection, Carolina Herrera's Wes Gordon showed elevated evening-out skirts adorned from waist to hem in a conversation-starting print of some sort.

Over on Prabal Gurung's catwalk, Spring 2027 skirts didn't just play with proportions and shades. Some of the most interesting slips were partially transparent, too. On Sept. 14, LaQuan Smith got in on the statement skirt fun, dressing models in as much animal print as possible.

It's been two years since Hadid's latest NYFW appearance (her horse show was the Spring 2024 circuit's unofficial grand finale), but her sister, Gigi Hadid, has been holding down the fort. Last week, the Guest In Residence founder opened Tommy Hilfiger's spring fashion show in the street style scene's leading color trend.

The Ôrebella founder announced her arrival in New York in a perfect-for-fall layered look, featuring a white T-shirt as her foundation, the flannel shirt trend, and a brown suede jacket. She paired the trio of tops with cuffed dark denim, a tomboy trucker hat, white socks slipped into Uggs' Classic Ultra Mini Boots, and Coach's slouchy shoulder bag.

It's tradition for a hue or two to emerge as New York Fashion Week's top color trend. Back in Sept. 2025, it was all about the burgundy. Last February, showgoers at Fall 2026 fêtes boarded the chocolate brown bandwagon. Now, whether guests are wearing head-to-toe tomato or splashes of scarlet, there are as many red pieces running rampant around NYFW as there are spectators.

The red takeover tiptoed its way into Manhattan on the eve of NYFW, popping Elle Fanning's leather pencil skirt at Coach, Ella Hunt's uber-buttoned blazer, and embroidery on Cynthia Erivo's military jacket at Ralph Lauren. (At the same time, Rachel Comey introduced fire hydrant-tinted hosiery and Cult Gaia traded beige for red bralettes.)

Once the official Day 1 of spring 2027 runway showcases began, the pigment became the not-so-subtle superstar of pre- and post-show step-and-repeats. But which shade came out on top? The perennial color (endorsed by Alaïa, Balenciaga, Hermès, and more for Fall 2026) that remains as popular today as it was in 2023 is tomato red.

During NYFW last September, Katie Holmes paired a ripened Metier purse with matching high-vamp flats. Once the first model graced the New York-based brand's catwalk, Gigi Hadid reminded spectators that red has always been her shade. Everyone from Kathryn Newton and Ashe to Gabrielle Union and Lisa Rinna frosted themselves in the fresh-from-the-garden tint.

There's no doubt that Union and Rinna wore the most red, though. While the Bring It On actor stacked a tomato sweater-turned-shawl over an identical sweater dress, the reality star posed in a knee-length ruby look that was more feathers than actual fabric.

Meanwhile, deeper shades of red offset the overwhelming majority of tomato attire.

Actor-turned-director Megan Park's Prime Video series, Sterling Point, has it all: family drama, teenage angst, a spicy love triangle, and, best part, looks from Chanel. On September 10, five weeks after the season premiere, the French house invited on-screen sisters Ella Rubin and Amélie Hoeferle to their Fashion Month soirée.

The New York Fashion Week newcomers looked like regulars at the launch party of Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu in SoHo. Rubin, who plays Annie, the teen drama's 17-year-old New York It-girl, channeled her character's minimalist closet in a silky little black dress. Her stylist, Emma Jade Morrison (who also works with Kaia Gerber, Sarah Pidgeon, and Zoey Deutch), paired the V-neck slip style with black-and-white cap-toe pumps: a Chanel staple as classic as the Première Watch she wears in the show.

Meanwhile, with help from her stylist, Bailey Moon, Hoeferle matched Rubin's energy in a lustrous LBD of her own. The spaghetti-strap slip boasted the same black satin sheen, except with a balconette bust and an elongated shoe-shielding skirt. Both co-stars accessorized with matching Chanel bags: Rubin's was a top-handle, north-south tote, while Hoeferle chose a quilted flap clutch. Then, Elle proved Lexi Minetree is so much more than just Reese Witherspoon's mini-me in the Legally Blonde prequel. Now, with Sterling Point renewed for another season, there's no telling what lies ahead for Annie and Ramona. But off-screen, they're certainly up-and-comers to watch.

Black dresses with unconventional cut-outs are like fashion catnip to Dakota Johnson. Over time, they've become her favorite way to show some skin, especially when the Valentino creative director, Alessandro Michele, is involved. For Johnson, New York Fashion Week began at the Kering Foundation's fifth annual Caring for Women Dinner, where she rubbed elbows with Salma Hayek Pinault, Simone Biles, and Pamela Anderson. According to her stylist, Johnson slipped Valentino's Enigme Satin Pumps beneath the dress's train, but the gold-heeled stilettos remained hidden.

For Eckhaus Latta, major fashion collaborations with beloved mall brands marked the beginning and the end of summer 2026. First, the New York- and L.A.-based label debuted an unconventional warm-weather wardrobe with Mango. Fast forward to September 11, and lead designers Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta reunited with J.Crew for an "unpretentious" collection that looks fresh from a '90s catalog. On the second day of New York Fashion Week, hours before the bicoastal brand's Spring 2027 show, the J.Crew x Eckhaus Latta collaboration welcomed shoppers into a world of whimsical colors, minimalist silhouettes, and autumnal staples from J.Crew's archives. "The inspiration for us was really J.Crew. It is an iconic American brand with a rich heritage," Eckhaus and Latta said in the press release. The longtime design duo "rummaged through a lot of [J.Crew] catalogs from the ’90s," searching for ways to give "clothes designed for how people actually live" the eccentric Eckhaus Latta twist.

To accompany the time-traveling collection, with J.Crew's best-selling Barn Jacket and Rollneck Sweater at the helm, photographer Luna Conte created a catalog-worthy campaign that "brings the creative tension between the brands to life through a house party where everyone is invited," per the press release.

Models traded the runway for the intimate corners of an eclectic house, where brushed, striped, and marled knitwear felt "unmistakably J.Crew, but unexpected enough to make you look twice," J.Crew's creative director of women's Olympia Gayot said in a statement.

The new Rollneck, for example, reintroduces the tubular collar and ribbed cuffs that have been around since 1988. However, similar to the Rollneck that Eckhaus Latta designed for the NYFW collaboration early in the year, unbalanced panels of grape purple and olive green are woven into the charcoal gray wool.

While the sweater could've been on loan from an Eckhaus Latta fashion show, layering them over sky blue jeans is straight out of J.Crew's playbook. In fact, Emma Chamberlain, the face of the new Tiny Rollneck campaign, wore a striped style with almost identical denim.

The beauty of the J.Crew x Eckhaus Latta collaboration is that "there’s a person for all of it," Latta told Vogue, referencing the universality of the 27-piece line that includes sweaters, button-down and rugby shirts, barn and duffle jackets, and even chinos and jeans.

The brands also encourage shoppers to play around with mixing and matching. Commit to the memorable matching sets—ranging from striped twinset sweaters to a moss green cardigan and skirt—or ground them in relatability with goes-with-everything denim. "There’s this wealth of things to explore and riff off of, and then subvert and digest and play with in a way that feels us," Eckhaus told the publication. The most on-brand Eckhaus Latta contribution? Seeking out "gross" colors like "puke green."

Between rarely missing a Knicks game during the 2026 NBA Finals and getting married last month to basketball star Karl-Anthony Towns, Jordyn Woods says, “I’m coming off of a really crazy time.” Meaning: She is taking New York Fashion Week as it comes. “Living in New York, it’s kind of just [like] getting dressed up to go in your backyard,” Woods, who moved to NYC from L.A. two years ago, tells Marie Claire. “If I was flying all the way here, I would've already had all my outfits together, but I don't know what I'm wearing this week at all.”

On September 10, Woods found out when she started Fashion Week like a true New Yorker: attending Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2027 runway show. Being the city's royalty right now (a title she earned after her “lucky” bag helped make Knicks history), she could have kicked off the season with any NYFW designer. But since Woods wanted her first Spring 2027 ‘fit to be “an ode to New York,” she chose an “effortless” look from Tommy Hilfiger, a label that sews the city’s Americana-cool aura into every preppy piece. “Tommy has been consistent with their brand since I was born, and so, just finding consistency and also being classic, that's what I'm looking for in my personal style,” she says.

So, when Woods arrived at the pre-NYFW fitting, she let Tommy Hilfiger take the reins. “I walked in…it was the only look on the [wardrobe rack]. I tried it on, it fit perfectly, and I went with it,” she says. “I didn't want to overthink it too much.” Her front row outfit was full of Tommy Hilfiger hallmarks—‘90s-style slim jeans and a vintage-looking raglan tee—but for her personal aesthetic, the espresso leather jacket was the most on-brand addition.

“I think it's about finding your identity within the brand that you're going [to NYFW] with,” she says, reflecting on her styling process for fashion shows. “Obviously, you want to support them and be on-trend with what they dress you in, but also it's about finding little pieces of yourself within the options that they have.”

Since her accessories—pointy burgundy pumps, bug-eye sunglasses, gold hoop earrings, and the Leopard-Print Calf-Hair Micro Bag—were on loan from the label, “it's really up to me to have fun with the glam part,” she says. “As long as I’m feeling good about my makeup and hair, then to me, whatever I have on will really radiate and shine.” Woods worried that “too much hair could be overpowering.” So, when it came down to sitting down in the chair, she slicked it back into a half-up look.

While this wasn’t her first time working with the brand—she and her sister, Jodie Woods, attended a NYFW brunch with Tommy Hilfiger in 2023—it was a full-circle moment for the ‘90s baby. “[The brand’s overalls] are something I would always find myself in,” Woods says.

She says she is drawn to the label’s signature style vocabulary—prep, sportswear, Americana colors—and how they all live together. “I have an alter ego, so there's a side of me that also loves to dress preppy on occasion, [especially] going to the US Open,” she says. “Even when I go golfing, I love just the collared shirts, the skirts, the kind of understated clothes—so I can relate to all of [Tommy Hilfiger’s different identities].”

She didn’t just RSVP to the Spring 2027 showcase as a Tommy Hilfiger loyalist, but as a fellow designer, too. (The model owns Woods by Jordyn, a three-year-old fashion brand.) “Any time anyone throws together a show, I know how much time and effort and work goes into it,” she says, adding that seeing their “vision come to life [helps me feel] inspired to maybe one day have my own show.”

On day one of NYFW, Woods leaned into the Tommy Hilfiger look, but that doesn't mean she won’t dip into her own closet for future outfits. “I have a fall collection coming out [next month], so I definitely want to start wearing it and showcasing it,” she says.

As to whether we’ll see another lucky bag viral moment from her during NYFW? Instead of feeling pressured to give the good luck charm a sister, Woods tries “to focus on the present because I feel like the best things in life aren't forced,” she says. “As an entrepreneur, I would love to be able to create a moment like that again, but it’s not something you can force. It has to just happen.”

The Spring/Summer 2027 season of New York Fashion Week began on September 10, but Ralph Lauren, Cult Gaia, and Coach got the party started early—on the eve of the calendar's first official shows. While everyone from Viola Davis to Cynthia Erivo gathered to see Ralph Lauren's "irreverent take on romance," Elle Fanning and Storm Reid celebrated Coach's 85th birthday by serving some of the best celebrity outfits, not cake.

Getting a head start on Fashion Month VIP attendance, Cult Gaia gave Katie Holmes, Madelyn Cline, and supermodel Iman free rein in the dress code department. While Holmes put comfort first in a slouchy-chic T-shirt and ultra-pleated pants, Cline stacked a leather bomber jacket over matching micro shorts.

For his first collection at the helm of Diane von Furstenberg, Henry Zankov began with advice from the woman whose name is on the door. “[Diane] always says to me, ‘It’s all about body language,’” the new artistic director tells Marie Claire.

That idea became the foundation for the Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Staged on Manhattan's High Line, directly above the brand’s Meatpacking District store, the show was a homecoming. Not only for the label, which hasn’t hosted a New York Fashion Week runway in almost a decade, but also for Zankov, who previously worked at DVF before leaving to launch his knit-centric namesake label that has since become a fashion industry favorite.

For his debut, Zankov didn’t try to rewrite the house codes so much as translate them into a modern-day lexicon. “The visual vocabulary of Diane von Furstenberg is so rich,” he says. “Everything is already here. It’s more about reworking it, looking through new fabrics and silhouettes, and making it fresh for today.”

According to the show notes, the collection centered on a “woman in motion” and celebrating “women who live their lives on her own terms.” In homage to the house’s most recognizable signature, a knee-length printed wrap dress opened the show. Colorful suiting, colorblocked outerwear, and saturated separates followed.

Fluid dresses in body-skimming jersey and gauzy chiffon, archival animal prints, and bow-finished blouses tapped into a distinctly Studio 54-era sensibility—the kind of clothes you could easily imagine von Furstenberg, who was in the audience, wearing out in late-’70s New York. The soundtrack drove the reference home: At one point, Norma Jean Wright’s 1978 disco track “I Like Love” played as evening tops and miniskirts with trailing detailing danced in the outdoor breeze.

“What I learned from [Diane] was how to work with the body: how clothes move, how they reveal, how they communicate,” Zankov wrote in the show notes.

But this was not simply an exercise in nostalgia. Zankov’s own signatures came through in graphic stripes, mismatched pattern combinations, and open-weave knitwear, lending an edge to DVF’s sensuality and femininity. (The pieces also winked back to his 2025 collaboration collection, which preceded his appointment.)

“Diane von Furstenberg is more overtly seductive and sexy, and Zankov is a bit more eccentric,” he said of where the two aesthetics meet. Visually, that came through in looks like the oversized cardigan coat and striped shirt, layered over a fitted pencil skirt. Or: a chartreuse-black fishnet knit skirt styled underneath a ‘70s-inflected safari jacket.

What Zankov wanted to come through most, though, was the effortlessness. “I wanted everyone to feel a sense of joy, but I also really wanted this idea of lightness to come through,” he said, pointing to light fabrics, silhouettes, and construction. “Because really DVF is about ease.”

If the challenge was figuring out how to honor one of New York’s most storied and joyful fashion brands without freezing it in the past, Zankov’s first answer was clear: keep the woman—and the clothes—moving forward.

New York Fashion Week is just getting started, and yet it has already become a Big Bag Convention. While editors, industry insiders, and influencers zoom from one runway show to the next, the street style circuit shows no shortage of bottomless shoulder styles. That's why it was so surprising to see Anne Hathaway with a tiny purple purse in tow on September 9, the eve of NYFW.

For Hathaway, Fashion Month began at the unveiling of "auruBOROS—Urban Memory and Collective Dream," Bulgari's first public art installation in the country. The pregnant star's longtime stylist, Erin Walsh, dressed her in an airy gown from McQueen's Fall 2026 fashion show.

The sweetheart neckline became its only structured design detail, and even that was buried beneath layers of floating chiffon. Better yet, the goddess-like strapless style (which could've been leftover from The Odyssey press tour) complemented the color trend that her novelty purse tapped into.

The jewelry brand ambassador didn't just frost herself in Bulgari bling. Her top-handle bag, the "Serpenti Cuore 1968," was on loan from the Italian label's catalog, too. Just big enough to carry her phone and lipstick, it prioritized fashion over function.

Once inside the celebrity-beloved Boom Boom Room, Hathaway finished her first NYFW 'fit of the season with a Bulgari Serpenti Pendant Necklace, diamond bangles and earring studs, metallic gold sandals by Aquazzura, and a red-hot lip and manicure (a subtle take on the red-and-purple color combination trend).

Is the Bulgari bag an unusual choice for NYFW? Perhaps, but not for Hathaway. During The Odyssey press tour, she stepped outside her black-bag comfort zone with a moss green Valentino DeVain, a linen-and-leather Prada Bonnie, and more.

Maybe Fall 2026 fashion shows from Celine, Area, Balenciaga, and CFCL inspired Hathaway to add a purple purse to her roster. Violet, lavender, raspberry, periwinkle, and amethyst clutches painted the runways purple.

It has been six weeks since Katie Holmes soft-launched her rumored relationship with artist Jason Bard Yarmosky. Now, after attending black-tie galas and high-luxury brand events, the two not only made their New York Fashion Week show debut on September 9 but also wore similar slouchy-chic T-shirts.

The two attended Cult Gaia's Spring 2027 show at the Gilder Center before the official NYFW calendar commenced. The night before spring showcases from Tommy Hilfiger, Proenza Schouler, and Tory Burch, Holmes wore an oversized black T-shirt with a shoulder-exposing neckline, elbow-length sleeves, and a French-tucked hem.

Yarmosky's shirt was a lived-in charcoal gray color, complete with a classic crewneck and unhemmed sleeves. Whether it was intentional or not, the celebrities coordinated on the bottom, too, with black pants.

The Dawson's Creek actor tapped into the pajama dressing trend with a silky pleated pair with a wide-leg hem that concealed her shoes. (Photos from the front row revealed the tiniest of pointed-toe boxes when she was sitting down.)

To finish her street style look, Holmes kept her accessories simple. She shade-matched gold hoop earrings to bangles that emerged from beneath her T-shirt's sleeve, and skipped a handbag altogether.

The sun hadn't set by the time Cult Gaia's creative director Jasmin Hekmat took her final bow. So, Holmes and Yarmosky attended a Target event, too, but not before a speedy outfit change (a regular occurrence for any NYFW guest).

To celebrate the launch of Target by Design (a two-day pop-up that Holmes's Target bag teased last week), she switched into more tailored attire: a white button-down, slim blue jeans, and tomato-red, python-tipped pumps from Isabel Marant.

Coach wouldn't accept any presents for its 85th anniversary—just the presence of New York Fashion Week attendees at the Spring 2027 runway show on September 9. Instead, creative director Stuart Vevers broke birthday tradition and gave his guests the best gift of Fashion Month so far: a new bag! Even better: Rather than debut the Turnlock Tote Bag on the runway and wait six months to release it, Coach made it instantly available for purchase.

Following the Empire Carryall for Fall 2025, Vevers has continued the tradition of debuting a new Coach purse on the runway. Once back-to-back Tabby Bags opened the fashion show at Pier 36, the brand-new Turnlock Tote graced the catwalk for the first time, accessorizing Look 3's leather tank top, pinstripe pants, and lived-in white sneakers. Not only was "Sandstone" the first shade show-goers saw, but it was also the first Turnlock Tote to sell out. (Don't worry, there are other styles available.)

"What matters to me is that we keep making fashion that becomes more beautiful through wear, experience, and love," Vevers said in the show notes.

With that in mind, the new bag—which blends the short straps of the Empire Carryall with the Haversack's turnlock trio—is "inspired by a Coach design from 1970," per the press release: "The Turnlock hardware [was] introduced by the house’s first lead designer, Bonnie Cashin."

The Turnlock Tote is available in two sizes: a smaller one for your wallet, phone, and maybe a book for $295, and a laptop-friendly one for $795. Both silhouettes scored spots in The Coach Originals collection, a growing list of vintage-inspired styles that include the Kisslock Barrel, the Kisslock Frame, and the Belted Ergo.

The spacious Turnlock Tote 40 appeared at the spring show in sandstone, black, and a rich shade of maple brown. The same minimal branding, brass hardware, and expandable gussets adorned every perfect-for-fall color that floated down the runway.

In true Coach style, not every Turnlock Tote immediately bounced from the runway to the brand's catalog. The spring show also introduced the silhouette in chocolatey suede with silver hardware, hand-rubbed metallic silver foil, and fresh-from-a-birthday-party confetti. You'll need an in with Vevers (or some patience until they hit stores) to turn one of the special-occasion Turnlock Totes into your back-to-school briefcase for fall.

As with any Coach fashion show, Vevers couldn't limit the new 53-piece collection to one It bag. The Tabby (one of the brand's most celebrity-beloved accessories) returned to the runway as the "collaged Tabby," with "vintage pouches," per the press release.

The shoulder style was joined by "The Inside-Out Brooklyn," a take on the Bella Hadid-beloved single-strap hobo bag that put its internal construction on display.

Between launching the viral Book Bag Charms, styling basketball stars for the WNBA Draft, and now debuting (what could be) another best-selling bag, the Coach takeover is still in full swing. This season, however, before Katie Holmes (a New Yorker with season tickets to Michael Kors, Ulla Johnson, Fforme, and more) added Target to her NYFW route, she discovered a new addition to her style survival kit: a limited-edition shopping bag from the retailer, designed by Public School New York in time for the Spring 2027 showcases.

A few days before Fashion Month festivities began, Katie Holmes was spotted with a then-mysterious Target tote on her shoulder. With its canvas bullseye-branded body and tomato-red tint, this wasn't the retailer's $0.99 reusable style. And the Dawson's Creek star didn't style it as such, either.

Awakening her affinity for big red bags, Holmes paired it with a white button-down, blue jeans, and grommeted Mary Jane shoes that let the color trend do all the talking.

Turns out, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, the design duo behind Public School New York, created Holmes's carry-all for Target by Design event. The two-day celebration will take place in New York City on Sept. 10 and 11 and highlight "reinterpretations of the Target bag by leading and emerging creative voices," per the press release.

The New York City-based brand that returned to NYFW this year after a seven-year hiatus wasn't alone in twisting the storied Target sling into an It bag. Holmes's fellow New York style setters like Venus Williams and Chloë Sevigny designed their takes on Target totes, too.

Perhaps inspired by the style tournament still happening at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Williams layered black athlete-approved netting over the brand's white bullseye logo.

Meanwhile, Sevigny showcased Target's iconic emblem on the bottom of a circular red purse with bead detailing.

How can you score Holmes's Target tote (or any of the other ones)? Unfortunately, you can't throw it onto the conveyor belt right before checking out. Instead, you'll have to enter for a chance to win one of the limited-edition Public School New York's bags on Target's Instagram.

Holmes likely didn't have to go through any of those hoops to add the canvas style to her handbag collection. Being a devoted Target shopper since at least 2014—and RSVP'ing "yes" to brand events over the years—was enough to get her off the waitlist.

Now, for those who aren't Holmes or one of the ten lucky winners, might I suggest shopping one of Target's more accessible collaborations? This year, the department store partnered with Hollister, LoveShackFancy, Roller Rabbit, and most recently, the New York-based brand Rosie Assoulin.

So, while you manifest an in-store sighting of Holmes's Target bag, treat yourself to a matching set (or two) from the Target x Rosie Assoulin collection. They're still ripe for the shopping—and under $50.

There’s the New York Fashion Week everyone knows, and then there’s the one you learn by osmosis. It lives in the names traded between editors in the back seat of a car, the collection a buyer insists you see before the week ends, and the designer whose clothes suddenly appear on three very well-dressed women within a few days. Increasingly, that version of New York belongs to labels like Diotima, Heirlome, TWO, Kallmeyer, and Ashlyn—brands whose cachet has been accrued through point of view rather than ubiquity.

Collectively, they make a persuasive case for why New York fashion still matters—a common discourse among industry insiders. Their aesthetics may diverge, but they share an independence of thought: clothes that feel deliberate rather than calculated, distinctive without becoming costume, and desirable without relying on a logo to do the talking. This constellation of smaller, ascendant labels keeps the city’s fashion ecosystem from becoming too polished or predictable. Because what would New York be if not unforeseeable?

New York has always been defined by the people making something before everyone else realizes they want it—and this season, these are the names worth knowing—and can shop right this very minute.

And while that doesn’t mean summer is officially over, it does mean I need to lock in because Fashion Month is upon us and my schedule is about to get really crazy. Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows that, style-wise, this was the summer of tiny tops and big shorts. And I see no reason to throw away that formula now! In fact, I’m going to cold-proof it with cropped sweaters and wide-leg trousers.

Sport Mode, But Make It Elevated

The US Open always coincides with New York Fashion Week, so tennis style is top of mind. I’m particularly obsessed with Polo Ralph Lauren’s collection for the occasion, but I generally love the idea of mixing athletic gear and dressier accessories as well.

Statement Jeans + a Plain T-Shirt

Back in my early editor days, when I couldn’t afford to spend a lot of money on clothes, my low-effort, high-impact styling trick was what we liked to call a party pant and a minimalist top. I still fall back on it because tbh, it’s just that easy!

Purple + Pink + Chartreuse

Another fashion week styling trick I loved in my early editor days was colorblocking. You couldn’t throw an invite without hitting an editor who (undoubtedly inspired by Jenna Lyons) looked like they rolled out of a Crayola box (complimentary). This color combo feels fresh and impactful. I can’t wait to give it a shot.

When Miranda Priestly click-clacked back into The Devil Wears Prada-verse for the sequel, fans never could've predicted Valentino Rockstuds would be her circa-2025 sidekick. One TikTok content creator called it a "diabolical move and not in a good way." Little did they know, The Devil Wears Prada 2 teaser played a pivotal role in reviving Valentino Rockstud pumps, 25 years after they already achieved world domination.

While Meryl Streep's red leather pair set off debates online, it simultaneously spiked interest. Searches for "Rockstud" on luxury reseller site Fashionphile have increased 180% since The Devil Wears Prada 2 teaser dropped in mid-November. Even before then, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Scherzinger, and Anne Hathaway snuck Rockstuds onto 2025's street style scene. Now, they're one of several resurgent styles making a definitive comeback on the heels of other early and mid-aughts relaunches, like Chloë's Paddington Bag, Tory Burch Reva Flats, and Hervé Léger’s bandage dresses.

Love them or hate them, fashion girls would recognize those pyramid-shaped studs anywhere. Back in 2010, when Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were co-creative directors at Valentino, they dressed nearly every Fall 2010 model in brand-new Valentino Rockstuds. The soon-to-be-signature motif trimmed T-strap ballet flats and stilettos aplenty.

Rockstuds only returned on the runway as an embellishment for purses, but that didn't matter. By 2014, the circa-Fall 2010 footwear version ruled the shoe racks of Emma Stone, Gigi Hadid, Reese Witherspoon, Dakota Fanning, Kourtney Kardashian, Eva Longoria, and even Fergie.

Valentino Rockstuds weren't just a celebrity staple; fashion insiders on the come-up wanted pairs, too. Before she was a personal shopper to the stars, then-government worker Gab Waller bought them with her first professional paycheck in 2015.

"I used to wear [the Rockstuds] everywhere," Waller tells Marie Claire. "When a consumer is purchasing luxury for the first time, they have [consistently] gone for the Rockstud, speaking from my own experience." According to Waller, they've always been an understated yet edgy way to say, "I'm a luxury shopper" without dousing yourself in a fashion house's monogram.

Some style commentators still associate Rockstuds with a specific moment in time—hence the reactions to their comeback in the Devil Wears Prada trailer. But Valentino has widely produced them since their launch. For that reason, Chloe King, director of fashion and lifestyle at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, says they "exist outside the trend cycle."

"Modernized details continue to do what won over shoppers years ago: offering women a high impact, supremely versatile shoe that will take them from the office and out on the town," King adds.

A closer look at celebrity street style proves they've remained in rotation well into the 2020s. Jennifer Lopez styled her first Rockstuds in 2019; Dr. Jill Biden wore them at a Sept. 2020 presidential debate; Selena Gomez and Olivia Dean boarded the bandwagon in 2023; Lopez finally flaunted her second pair—red Rockstuds with slingback kitten heels—in 2025.

2025 was the biggest year for Rockstuds since 2013, largely thanks to The Devil Wears Prada 2 and now-creative director Alessandro Michele. That wasn't an accident. Valentino head of brand and product marketing Quoc-Anh Truong Cornette noted on LinkedIn the Rockstuds were deliberately placed in the trailer.

That bit of marketing-meets-movie magic proved successful in the end. One TikTok creator responded to Rockstud naysayers saying, "I am not falling for the anti-Valentino Rockstud propaganda." Another fan even splurged on a vintage pair because she suspected "they're on the verge of a major comeback."

By Dec. 2025, Michele debuted his take on Valentino Rockstuds in the Pre-Fall 2026 look book, placing the embellishment across ten new silhouettes. Waiting a few months into his tenure was a deliberate move. "I didn’t want to do this the day after I arrived here, because I found it weird and I didn’t know this territory so well," he told WWD.

By staying true to trademark Rockstud elements—including pointy toe boxes, ankle straps, and slim stilettos—Michele opened the shoes up to a nostalgia-driven generation of shoppers. "As newer generations discover cultural touchstones from the aughts, it makes perfect sense that the Rockstud would find an energized new following," King says.

Michele-era Rockstuds could very well share the same celebrity-beloved fate as their predecessors. One month after launch, the Pre-Fall 2026 stilettos flooded Michele's Spring 2026 Couture front row. Newly-minted Valentino ambassador Dakota Johnson arrived in a black, T-strap pair.

Tyla followed close behind Johnson at the Paris Haute Couture Week show in new Valentino Rockstuds. Her polka-dotted pair boasted yellow gold studs from heel to toe.

The Valentino Rockstud 2.0 has been public knowledge for three months, but Michele's version has yet to hit the market. (You'll need a personal shopper like Waller to track down a pair.) That said, it's unclear how shoppers will respond to new Rockstuds. Will Michele's take become as synonymous with his tenure as Chiuri and Piccioli's?

"Demand did decrease when Rockstuds were everywhere in the mid-2010s," Waller says. "I hope this time around they're [released] in more of a limited way, whether that's with colors or heel shapes to create the demand that's been lost over the years."

It seems she forecasted Valentino's plan: Not a single pair appeared in January's Couture lineup. Nevertheless, the clientele craves a full-on Rockstud renaissance. Ahead of the official relaunch, some shoppers are already buying the 26-year-old rendition once again.

When the lights came up on Paris Fashion Week's final shows, the buzziest model castings weren't Gen Z fresh faces. They were women who had experience developing their taste on and off the runway.

Stephanie Cavalli, a model in her 50s, opened Matthieu Blazy's Fall 2026 Chanel show in a chic quarter-zip and the handbag everyone will be shopping for by September. A day later, Miu Miu populated its vibe-shift collection with the likes of Gillian Anderson and Chloë Sevigny: one on her first runway ever, the latter returning after a 30-year hiatus. They wrapped up a fashion month where mature models in their 40s, 50s, and beyond ruled the call sheet—proof that designers, even in a male-dominated industry, understand that caring about style doesn't have an age limit.

Across the fashion month circuit, mature models seemed more prevalent than ever before. Casting ranged from designers choosing their favorite muses to selecting women who mirrored their store customers (or those in their front rows). At New York Fashion Week, Carolina Herrera's creative director Wes Gordon tapped a range of established creatives, like photographer Ming Smith and artist Amy Sherald. TWP's show the same week had models in their 20s and 50s wearing cozy shawl coats together; Martha Stewart was the guest of honor, taking it all in. Michael Kors and Calvin Klein also reserved some of their most noteworthy looks on the most experienced models. Broadening the age range on the runway isn't just a nostalgia play, as seen in Demna's stunt-casting of Mariacarla Boscono (45) and Kate Moss (52) alongside several celebrity-turned-models in his first runway outing for Gucci. It's also a sign that luxury players understand the enduring nature of style—and the growth of their customer base. Women across generations can appreciate a handcrafted leather bag, a semi-sheer dress spangled with crystals, or a high-vamp heel. When it's time for those highly-anticipated It pieces to land on shelves, guess who's established enough in their career (or even comfortably into retirement), to actually shop those five-figure pieces at the Paris stores?

Age-inclusive casting has been done in previous seasons, of course. Batsheva Hay exclusively cast models who were at least in middle-age for her Fall 2024 show. Last September at Miu Miu, Anatomy of a Fall star Sandra Hüller opened the runway with a subversive take on the apron dress. What's different for 2026 is that the memo is widespread. Women of varied ages are wearing just as diverse a range of styles; no one's confined to just one dress trend (or matronly set).

But it seems the impetus for representing all the women who could belong to a designer's girl gang stopped at checking their IDs. As Marie Claire has previously reported, size inclusivity has been on the decline for several seasons—even as curve-enhancing hoop skirts and panniers have become a popular motif. For the past two seasons, according to a Vogue Business study, plus-size models accounted for an abysmal less than one percent of runway slots.

Before official statistics on Fall 2026 castings were released, it was already looking like curves were left out of the conversation again. Ashley Graham may have walked Harris Reed's final Nina Ricci show at London Fashion Week, and Devyn Garcia joined the lineup at Hermès, but those shows were outliers. Sure enough: Vogue Business reported March 23 that plus-size representation didn't rise above a single percentage point in any major market. Only 0.3% of total looks were plus-size, and 2.1% were mid-size.

Seeing designers champion models who've been in the business for decades is, of course, something to celebrate. Here's the thing: The arguments they make in favor of expanding one demographic in their line-ups can apply to so many more. After Chanel's January couture show, where several women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s walked the runway, Matthieu Blazy told The New York Times that mature models "bring a completely different dimension to the clothes." Can't the same be said for everyone beyond the usual mold? When everyone's a potential customer, inclusivity shouldn't be an "either-or." It should be a "yes, and."
