I’ve been a fragrance collector for a few years now, and I am finally at the point where I am over the gourmand phase. Now, I crave perfumes with depth and interesting notes that leave a lasting impression, so it makes sense that I have been reaching for my leather perfumes.

“Leather adds warmth, texture, and sensuality to a fragrance,” Kudzi Chikumbu, also known as Sir Candle Man, tells me. “The note is so incredibly versatile that it can transport you to the last time you wore your favorite leather jacket or suede bag, the first day in your new car when it had that fresh-off-the-lot smell, or even a tannery. Leather in a perfume can make the composition of the fragrance more rugged and masculine or the reverse—soft and more feminine.”

If seeing the words "leather" and "perfume" juxtaposed makes you panic a little, I don’t blame you. The note has often been used in more masculine-leaning scents and provides a deep richness to perfumes that can feel very intimidating to wear. Allow me to ease your fears: leather perfumes don’t always have to be loud, beast-mode sillage to be part of the olfactive family. In fact, I have quite a few that run the gamut from floral to woody, and even a little gourmand, proof that the note’s versatility is practically endless.

Whether you’re also looking to expand beyond your gourmand scents, or you simply want to take a deeper dive into the world of leather fragrance notes, keep reading for a curated list of some of my favorites from my rather massive perfume collection. Plus, Chikumbu shares a few additional tips on how to make leather perfumes work for your personal scent aesthetic.

    Lamp;rsquo;art amp;amp; La Matiamp;Egrave;re Cuir Bamp;Eacute;luga amp;ndash; Eau De Parfum 100 Ml / 3.38 Oz

    Best Leather Perfume Overall
    Guerlain
    L’art La Matiére Cuir Béluga
    $445
    $445 AT GUERLAIN

Guerlain is one of my all-time favorite fragrance houses (their recent musk line is one of the loves of my life). Still, the brand also offers some incredible scents in its private-label collection, and Cuir Béluga is among the best. A combination of fruity, gourmand, and even some aldehydic (or clean) notes, to me, this perfume feels like luxury, bottled.

    Fragrance Family: Amber

    Key Notes: Aldehydes; Patchouli; Vanilla

    Size: 3.4 fl oz

What I Love: Softer take on a leather note; Can really smell the vanilla, musk, and amber base notes

What I Don’t: Some people claim it smells a little like baby powder

Review for MC: “Cuir Beluga is my ideal leather perfume. It opens up with an almost soapy face that has a citrus twist before it gradually warms up on the skin to reveal the leather note. Still, the leather facet isn’t abrasive in any way—it’s combined perfectly with vanilla, musk, and amber notes for a more sweet and creamy interpretation of the note.”— Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

Fucking Fabulous Eau De Parfum Fragrance With Leather amp;amp; Almond

    Best Sweet Leather Perfume
    Tom Ford
    Fucking Fabulous Eau De Parfum
    $405
    SHOP NOW

I promise you’ll never find a perfume name that is as accurate as this one. Tom Ford’s Fucking Fabulous is just that—a fabulous combination of some of the most gorgeous notes in perfumery. With orris accord, iris, and almond, this perfume can please pretty much any palette. If you’re on the hunt for a leather perfume that can please anyone from a gourmand lover to the person who only sticks to woods and spices, start right here.

    Fragrance Family: Spicy Woods

Key Notes: Leather; Orris; Tonka bean; Almond

    Size: 1.7 fl oz

What I Love: The name is a conversation starter; Sophisticated and perfect for those who don’t love a gourmand but still want something sweet

What I Don’t: Some liken the scent to the smell of Play-Doh

Review for MC: “I’ve tried numerous Tom Ford perfumes and without a doubt, Fucking Fabulous, is my favorite from the line. Not only does it have a leather note, but it also leans a little gourmand, thanks to an almond note. All of the above pair perfectly with the powder-y orris that’s also included in the formula, which is all I smell on the dry down. If you prefer sweet perfumes but want fewer cupcakes and frosting and more dominatrix vibes, start here.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

Chandigarh Express Eau De Parfum, 1.7 Oz.

    Best Woody Leather Perfume
    Ex Nihilo
    Chandigarh Express Eau De Parfum
    $355
    SHOP NOW

Ex Nihilo has slowly become one of my favorite fragrance brands, and Chandigarh Express is yet another example of why. The leather accord in the fragrance is flanked by a mix of floral and woody notes that keep it light and airy. The result? A unisex leather perfume that can be worn any time of year.

    Fragrance Family: Woods

Key Notes: Cardamom; Leather accord; Jasmine; Patchouli

    Size: 3.4 fl oz

What I Love: Gorgeous presentation; All-day wear; Unisex

What I Don’t: Very niche brand only available in certain locations, so some may have to blind buy

Review for MC: “This perfume was so unexpectedly uplifting that I had to do a double-take on whether there was actually a leather note in the formula. On skin, the leather note didn’t come until after a few minutes because initially, all I could smell was this delicious spicy floral scent that kept me coming back for more until I finally started picking up on it. This is to say that if you’re new to incorporating leather into your perfume collection, this is a pretty safe place to start.”— Ariel Baker

    Vanille Leather - 100ml in Manufacturer#039;s Bottle

    Best Vanilla Leather Perfume
    BDK Parfums
    Vanille Leather Eau de Parfum
    $290
    SHOP NOW

If you can't let go of your gourmand vanilla perfumes just yet, BDK’s Vanille Leather is the perfect way to introduce some depth to your favorite note. Vanilla from Madagascar, violet, tuberose, pink pepper—it’s all packed into this stunning formula that feels like the epitome of the word “elegant.”

    Fragrance Family: Floral Amber

Key Notes: Vanilla; Tuberose; Leather accord

    Size: 3.4 fl oz

What I Love: Vanilla-forward; The leather note adds a bit of edge, making this perfume a great way to ease into leather fragrances slowly

What I Don’t: Some may find this perfume to be a little dense; the individual notes can be hard to parse out for the untrained nose

Review for MC: “If you like any variation of sweet floral notes, BDK’s Vanille Leather will be the leather perfume of your dreams. Tuberose, jasmine, and orange blossom make up the heart of this formula, and even as a notorious tuberose hater, I have to admit that in this expression, the note smells damn good. Tack on the pink peppercorn, orris, and violet facets, which are also present in this perfume? Immaculate is the best word to describe this intoxicating combination.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

Velvet Tender Oud Eau De Parfum

    Best Rose Leather Perfume
    DolceGabbana
Velvet Tender Oud Eau De Parfum
    $345
    SHOP NOW

Rose lovers, step to the front of the line. Dolce Gabbana’s Velvet Tender Oud caught me by surprise with how much I loved it. The double-down on the rose notes might have been what did the trick, as the formula includes both Damask rose and rose centifolia. The result is a perfume that keeps the note from taking over completely, thanks to the more heady leather and oud notes at the base. The blend of this fragrance is what really makes it shine, so if you’re a rose lover who doesn’t want to compromise when getting into leather perfumes, start right here.

    Fragrance Family: Woody Floral

Key Notes: Damask Rose; Rose Centifolia; Suede Leather; Oud

    Size: 3.4 fl oz

What I Love: Somehow the rose in this perfume only amplifies the leathery and woody facets of the fragrance; Over six hours of wear before fading

What I Don’t: If you’re not a fan of floral scents, you might not be able to get over the rose notes, as they are very prominent; Finicky bottle cap

Review for MC: “I’ve never smelled a fragrance that so distinctly, yet seamlessly, blends two powerhouse notes until I got my nose on Velvet Tender Oud. On first pass, I get a ton of the rose note, but when I really take a deep inhale, I also smell the leather note. As the day wears on, I feel like the leather gets a little more prominent, before settling down to a gorgeous, woody skin scent.” — Ariel Baker

    Trudon
    Carmen
    $280
    SHOP NOW

Leather fragrances can sometimes skew a little too smoky or heavy, but Carmen by Trudon feels far more refined. It opens with a hint of bright bergamot before settling into warm tobacco and soft, almost suede-like leather. It wears like a deep skin-scent, with a sensual touch, and as it settles, touches of woods, patchouli, and ambroxan add depth, giving the scent a smooth finish that lingers without feeling overpowering.

    Key Notes: Bergamot, Tobacco, Leather

    Size: 3.4 fl oz

What I Love: True unisex fragrance; It's intimate and skin-focused, so although it's heady, it has that sensuality element

What I Don’t: Probably not a daytime fragrance

Review for MC: "I’ll be honest: I’m not typically a leather-fragrance person. They can sometimes feel a little too smoky or heavy for my taste. But Carmen surprised me. On my skin, the leather reads softer—almost suede-like—with a warm tobacco note that makes it feel cozy rather than intense, likely due to its skin-scent factors. It still has that cool, slightly edgy aspect, though." — Siena Gagliano, Beauty Editor

    Falcon Leather Eau De Parfum

    Best Realistic Leather Perfume
    Matiere Premiere
    Falcon Leather Eau De Parfum
    $230
    SHOP NOW

If you want a leather perfume that leans a bit more on the masculine side, you may want to take a look at Falcon Leather by Matiere Premiere. Inspired by a falconer's leather gloves, this perfume is woody, resinous, and meant to invoke the smell of both the full-grain side and the soft, suede side of leather. Paired with saffron and labdanum? You might never stop sniffing your wrist after a few sprays of this ultra-realistic perfume.

    Fragrance Family: Leather Amber

    Key Notes: Saffron; Benzoin; Labdanum

    Size: 1.7 fl oz

What I Love: Beast mode longevity; Sleek, minimal packaging

What I Don’t: Not for beginner fragrance collectors, as it can be a bit overwhelming to the nose

Review for MC: “Falcon leather is for the people who straight up want to smell like tanned hide with an extra resinous touch. One of my favorite notes of all time, saffron, opens the fragrance before labdanum, and the star of the show, Birch tar, takes center stage. It’s rounded out by a resinous benzoin note that gives it an almost syrupy facet that smells delicious on skin.” — Ariel Baker

    Halfeti Leather Eau De Parfum
    $330
    SHOP NOW

One of my first introductions to the world of leather perfumes was Halfeti Leather, and this perfume is still one of the best on the market today. A warm and spicy interpretation of the note, this formula features ingredients like incense, plum, and even bergamot, all of which combine to give a very sophisticated, elevated, and unisex leather perfume that can be worn year-round.

    Fragrance Family: Warm and Spicy

    Key Notes: Incense; Plum; Bergamot

    Size: 3.4 fl. oz

What I Love: Long-lasting; Perfect to share with a loved one

What I Don’t: There are essential oils in this formula, so try not to spray it directly on your clothing, as it might stain

Customer Review: “This perfume has a really nice scent to it. I like the different notes of amber, plum, and leather in it. It only takes a little bit, and the scent lingers with me all day. I have received several compliments on it. I really like it!” — Bloomingdales

Somewhere But Nowhere Eau De Parfum With Cedarwood

Somewhere But Nowhere Eau De Parfum
    $92
    SHOP NOW

You’ve likely seen someone on your TikTok feed talking about this perfume, and it’s for good reason. Lore’s Somewhere But Nowhere is spicy, creamy, and woody, thanks to notes like vanilla cream that flank the leather and woody notes beautifully. The result is an earthy, heady perfume that smells like the coolest person you know.

    Fragrance Family: Earthy

Key Notes: Cedarwood; Vanilla Cream; Cardamom

    Size: 1.7 fl oz

What I Love: Earthy take on a leather note; hand-designed packaging; One of the more approachable leather fragrances on this list

What I Don’t: Not the longest-lasting scent; Some may find it to smell a bit like chemicals

Customer Review: "If you’re looking for a unisex perfume, this is definitely one to check out. It truly delivers on that spicy sandalwood scent - warm, smooth, and just a little bold. From the very first spray, it instantly reminds me of Armani’s Santal Dan Sha, with the same refined woody depth. It feels elegant but still easy to wear every day, all seasons, and it lasts long,” — Sephora

    Why Are Leather Perfumes Trending?

You’re likely wondering why leather perfumes are slowly regaining popularity in the warmer spring and summer months. In short? It all goes back to that versatility that I mentioned earlier.

“Leather perfumes can run the gamut from lighter, more ‘everyday' fragrances to more sultry variations,” Kudzi says. “I personally love either a softer buttery leather like Guerlain Cuir Beluga, which is one of the lighter leather perfumes I’ve tried. There’s also Cuir de Russie from Chanel, which is a white-floral leather that’s bold but not offensive. The note can even go the musky, smoky route to give that super sexy maneater vibes.”

In short, leather perfumes give you a certain je ne sais quoi that makes you move differently through the world. I’ve found them to be like an invisible armor, especially when paired with the right outfit that makes me feel like my most confident self. Even though the note can be considered intimidating, I truly believe that everyone should own at least one.

What Other Notes Pair With Leather Perfumes?

The biggest thing I’ve learned from some of the greatest noses in this industry is that fragrance is intensely personal. With that in mind, you can layer your leather perfumes with whatever your heart desires. Still, Kudzi has also offered a general guideline to follow.

“I love any stone fruit note paired with leather,” he says. “Think apricots and peaches— that kind of vibe. If I want to be bold, tobacco, oud, and leather will result in endless compliments. For something refined and sexy, iris and rose also pair really well with leather ingredients.”
