It’s somewhere below 60 degrees, and the wind has a spicy little chill to it—so naturally, I start pulling my sweaters out of storage. My beige cashmere always gets first pick when the season changes, and I’m not the only one. There’s an undeniable desire for physical comfort, and most would agree that the soft, fuzzy texture of cashmere is second to none.

It’s no surprise, then, that our collective yearning for coziness has spilled over from clothing and blankets to fragrance. “We live in an extraordinarily overstimulated culture, and there's a tremendous appetite for things that promise comfort, cleanliness, and a sense of control. Cashmere fits perfectly into that desire,” says Douglas Little, perfumer and founder of Heretic Parfum. And he’s not talking about wool anymore.

According to Little, our growing desire for comforting experiences has driven up demand for cashmere fragrances. Since you can’t really bottle the feeling of being wrapped in a thick, soft blanket, perfumers across various brands have tried to do the next best thing: translate the warm, comforting sensation of cashmere into a scent.

But if the fuzzy luxury fabric we all love to wrap ourselves in doesn’t actually smell like anything, what’s in a “cashmere” perfume? I asked myself this exact question as I considered that my EOS Vanilla Cashmere Body Mist and my Donna Karan Cashmere Perfume both name-drop the fabric but smell completely different. To make things even more confusing, some fragrances highlight cashmere alone as a scent, while others add the word woods or musk after the descriptor, slightly differentiating the fragrance.

Perfume has always borrowed from the language of textiles—think of how many scents are described as silky, velvety, or suede. Little says that cashmere goes a little bit further than other fragrance descriptors. “Cashmere is one of the great inventions of modern perfumery,” says Little. “Not because it is an extraordinary ingredient, but because it isn't really an ingredient at all. It's a manufactured idea of softness.”

This is the fragrance that comes to mind for most people when they think of cashmere perfumes. The iconic scent has been a cult favorite since its release in the late 90s. The classic smell has top floral notes, including jasmine and lily of the valley, which give it an initial clean, crisp scent. The base of cashmere wood, musk, sandalwood, vanilla, and amber releases that soft, cozy effect as it dries down on the skin.

Review: "It smells powdery, soft, and feminine. I absolutely love it. I started off with a mini and had to upgrade to a full size bottle. I love a fresh and clean scent." — Ulta

For those who prefer a darker take on cashmere, this woody fragrance is made up of cashmere woods, amber, and musk, but with a dark fruity accord from black cherry and warm spices, including frankincense and myrrh, for a rich and moody finish.

Review: "I love this fragrance. I get a ton of compliments when I put it on. Nice smell and don’t need to spray much, just a little. I definitely recommend it." — Bluemercury

Cashmeran is the main star of this complex perfume, giving the scent a soft, lingering effect on the skin. Exotic notes like Sichuan pepper, fresh ginger, and Egyptian jasmine add a unique zing to the minimal base.

Review: "The bottle is enough to make you buy this, but the scent is absolutely delectable. It has a spiciness to it that makes it smell like nothing else on the market." Samantha Holender, Senior Beauty Editor

This creamy take on cashmere is the olfactory equivalent of a decadent bowl of vanilla ice cream. The base of vanilla bean sings as soon as you spray the bottle, but cashmere woods create a warm, enveloping feel that lasts on the skin.

Review: "It smells sooooo so nice I love it; however, I feel like I'm either doing something wrong because it doesn't project and stays very close to the skin. I have an oil that's similar, and I was hoping this would just project the smell more. I layer it with lotion and such, but idk. If you don't want something super loud but very good-smelling, this might be for you." — Ulta

What Notes Actually Smell Like Cashmere?

When you see vanilla, caramel, or rose on a fragrance note list, your nose can anticipate what the perfume will smell like based on the natural ingredients those notes are derived from (even if the fragrance uses a synthetic version). Cashmere is different, though, because perfumers aren’t taking pieces of wool and extracting its olfactory essence.

“What consumers are generally smelling is a combination of synthetic musks, woody aroma molecules, and sometimes amber materials designed to evoke warmth, cleanliness, and the sensation of something soft against the skin,” says Little. Kara Kowalski, head of product and scent development at Snif, adds that this “lab-grown” scent note is called the Cashmeran accord, which was created by IFF in the 1970s. “Cashmeran is a beautiful, multifaceted molecule that smells musky, slightly peppery, woody, and powdery.”

Essentially, perfumers have added the word cashmere to the fragrance vocabulary to help create the feeling they want a fragrance to evoke. “[We’ve] taught people to associate a particular family of synthetic aromas with luxury, intimacy, and comfort,” says Little. “The word cashmere does an enormous amount of emotional work before you've even smelled the fragrance.

Are There Different Types of Cashmere Smells?

Since cashmere is more of a translation of a feeling than an actual scent, perfumers aren't limited to one ingredient and “can interpret cashmere in completely different ways,” says Kowalski. This is why one cashmere scent can differ significantly from another, and why seeing the word in a perfume’s marketing isn't always a strong indicator of what it’ll smell like.

“One perfumer might incorporate Iso E Super to create something more ethereal, woody, and skin-like, while another might introduce jasmine to give the accord a more feminine take,” Kowalski adds. Cashmere is the overarching scent umbrella, but how perfumers choose to interpret that “smell” can result in olfactory blends like cashmere woods and cashmere musk.

In a culture where a lot of fragrance shopping happens online, and our recommendations come from social media, it’s worth digging a little deeper into the notes when you see the word cashmere on a perfume bottle. The associations of luxury wool, comfort, and warmth almost automatically influence how you imagine the scent will smell. But since cashmere in fragrance is “an artistic interpretation,” according to Kowalski, you might be completely wrong—maybe even in a pleasantly surprising way.

Cashmere's ambiguity is what makes it so popular in fragrance—just as the stitching in two cashmere sweaters can vary ever so slightly, yet both can still feel soft and luxurious.

Douglas Little is a master of visual communication and storytelling. He specializes in the interpretation and translation of corporate identity into dramatic window displays, products, advertising and other media that articulate the unique sensibility of a particular brand.

A native of California, Little studied marketing and product development at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After years of working for prominent companies in the beauty and cosmetics industry, he left America to study at the Syndicat National des Fabricants de Produits Aromatiques in Grasse, France. With that experience in hand, he returned to the U.S. in 2003 and founded his namesake business, D.L. Co.: Modern Alchemists and Purveyors of Curious Goods.

D.L. Co. made an instant splash in the marketplace by infusing visions of antique luxury with a fresh, modern spirit. Little applied his highly personal aesthetic—a combination of Edwardian decadence, Asian mystery and contemporary rock-n-roll edginess—to a wide range of products beginning with artisanal perfumed candles and extending to jewelry, porcelain, glass, writing papers, home accessories and personal care items. More than any one product, the success of D.L. Co. was based on the designer’s skill at marketing the romance and allure of his signature look.

Recognizing this talent for fashioning a cohesive “world of luxury,” many companies have called upon Little to create provocative window displays and other artful branded environments that communicate their corporate credo and drive product sales. His client list includes Van Cleef Arpels, Barney’s New York, Bergdorf Goodman,Maxfield Los Angeles, Neiman Marcus, Harry Winston, Jim Thompson, Mrs. John L.
