Last week, I had an epiphany at Olympic Spa—a classic place to have epiphanies, to be fair. After a full-body scrub, massage, and scalp treatment (it's a ritual called Pure Bliss, and it's aptly named), I was browsing the great K-beauty products in the lobby—particularly the creams and serums designed for mature skin in mind—and feeling very excited about my aesthetic future. If I can visit the Korean spa regularly and keep my skincare routine well-stocked, I have a strong feeling that I'll be glowing for decades to come.

The world of K-beauty is stellar for many reasons, and those with mature skin can really benefit from its innovations, ingredients, and wide variety of formulations. As Alicia Yoon, esthetician and founder of K-beauty brand Peach Lily, explains, "As our skin evolves, I am a true believer that it's not about 'fixing' things. It's more about understanding what is happening deeper within our skin and supporting our skin at each stage in the most impactful way." She notes that as skin matures, fibroblasts (which are responsible for producing our collagen and elastin) become less plentiful and less active. "This leads to a loss of collagen, which gives our skin structural support and a loss of elastin, which gives our skin bounce. Our cell renewal process also slows down, leading to more dullness and rougher texture." Lipids also deplete with age, which impacts the skin's moisture barrier and make it more difficult to retain hydration. And, of course, there is less overall plumpness and more discoloration from years of UV damage.

Finding the right products that are formulated with the right ingredients to boost your skin's natural moisture is key, especially for more mature complexions. Luckily, Korean beauty brands are leading the way in terms of beneficial ingredients and practices. As Yoon explains, "Rather than taking an aggressive or quick-fix approach, K-beauty focuses on building healthy skin for the long-term through hydration, nourishment, and barrier support, while considering the deeper structural shifts skin experiences. It’s about building a curated routine using ingredients that are both effective and gentle, and really listening to what skin needs at each stage."

The proof of K-beauty's benefits is in the skin of the many beautiful women born before me, like my mother, who loves the spa as much as I do. She's kindly shown me a glimpse of what my skin could look like in the future, and if I treat mine as well as she treats hers with plenty of K-beauty serums for mature skin, the outlook is glassy.

What K-Beauty Ingredients Are Best for Mature Skin?

It's well-known that Korea is far ahead of the United States in terms of ingredient innovation, but even if you can't book a flight to Seoul, you can still find exceptional K-beauty skincare products at your local retailer. According to Yoon, these are the best ingredients to look for when shopping with mature skin in mind.

    • Ginseng: "I absolutely love ginseng for its unique adaptogens that are typically well tolerated by skin—not harsh or irritating—and provide multiple benefits, including visibly improving firmness, brightness, and skin vitality and resilience," she says.
    • Centella Exosomes: Yoon is quick to point out that not all exosomes—one of the buzziest ingredients in skincare right now—are created alike. "High-quality exosomes have clinically-validated results behind them to support mature skin in a unique way," she explains. "You can think of exosomes as highly specific skin communicators where surface proteins help guide a cargo of messages to various skin cells. In this distinctive way, exosomes can target specific ways to help prevent and reverse visible signs of aging. While centella extract is a K-Beauty ingredient celebrated for its soothing properties, centella exosomes that have been preserved, extracted, and stabilized the right way can powerfully address signs of aging."
    • Scutellaria baicalensis: "I love the incorporation of herbs in Korean skincare that have centuries of time-tested results in traditional Korean medicine," says Yoon. "Scutellaria baicalensis, for example, aka skullcap root, is an herb that has been celebrated in traditional Korean herbal remedies for its ability to soothe and renew and revive skin. In more recent studies, scutellaria baicalensis extract has been shown to visibly improve photoaging signs. This extract is well tolerated and is a beautiful ingredient that can support mature skin without harsh downsides."

Of course, these are just a handful of the K-beauty ingredients that can benefits mature skin, so if you're looking to pick up a few new formulas to add to your (or your loved one's) skincare routine, keep scrolling.

The Best K-Beauty Serums for Mature Skin

    The MVPs

There are so many serums on the market, but one of the most beautiful things about getting older is your ability to be more discerning. If you were to pick just one K-beauty serum for mature skin, I would suggest going with a product that has multiple benefits...or one that packs a major punch. Yes, I have examples.

Though it's much more expensive than other options on this list, Sulwhasoo really is a crème de la crème K-beauty brand—and this ginseng-rich serum is exactly the powerhouse you'd expect it to be. More concentrated than their cult-favorite First Care Activating Serum, the visibly firming formula has been shown to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles in as few as seven days.

A jar of Lazy Skinscience Double Duty.

No product can do it all, but some can do more than others. New York-based K-beauty brand Lazy Skinscience's debut offering, Double Duty, is a two-for-one serum-and-moisturizer combo that invites you to lighten up both your routine and your skin woes. It's packed with silkening red camellia (the serum half) and squalane (the moisturizer half)—plus loose skin-targeting silver ear mushroom, wrinkle-fighting bakuchiol, and a tired skin-battling peptide complex for a whole lot of goodness.

    Hydration Heroes

Is your skin actually wrinkly, or is it just dehydrated? Sometimes, you'd be surprised by the answer. Dehydration can actually lead to crepey skin and exaggerated fine lines. The good news is that K-beauty serums are packed with hydrators like all different forms of hyaluronic acid, tremella, and glycerin to make sure you're feeling plush. (And regardless, proper hydration is a necessity for mature skin. It's a fact that as we age, our skin gets drier.)

New to Sephora, OLIVIAUMMA—that translates to “Olivia’s mom”—is a very cute K-beauty brand that takes a "cross-generational approach" to skincare rooted in long-term skin health. My skin drinks it right up, which makes sense because it uses a technology to help it rapidly absorb into the skin.

    Old(er) Skin, New Ingredients

PDRN—you might also know it as salmon sperm—is a buzzy ingredient right now. “When applied or injected, [PDRN] kickstarts your skin’s healing process by activating fibroblasts and growth factors,” registered nurse Eric Nietzel-Leone, RN, BSN, previously told Marie Claire. “That means more collagen and elastin—two key players in keeping skin firm, smooth, and elastic.”

Radiant, revitalized skin coming right up. The packaging of Rejuran's Turnover Ampoule reads "my signature anti-wrinkle and moisturizing solution." I don't love it when products put words in my mouth, but it's completely right about that. My skin feels better immediately upon application.

    Pdrn Pink Peptide Serum

I'm sure you've seen this little pink dropper bottle before. If not, I'm happy to introduce you. Medicube's PDRN Pink Peptide Glow Serum features salmon PDRN and a five-peptide complex to repair and rejuvenate skin. It absorbs quickly and promises to boost elasticity "for a firmer, more radiant complexion."

    Brands I Already Love

The K-beauty world is vast, and it can often be helpful to have a little brand loyalty when parsing through your options. If there's a product you already love, check whether they offer one that might be better suited to mature skin! I bet they do.

    Super Oasis Concentrated Serum

The glass skin hero, Peach Lily, has plenty of great offerings, and this super-hydrating serum, packed with glycerin and *five* forms of hyaluronic acid, is a favorite. Antioxidant-rich red ginseng and wild cherry are also on hand to fight visible signs of aging.

The 6 Peptide Skin Booster Serum With Niacinamide amp;amp; Hyaluronic Acid

    COSRX

Another K-beauty brand everyone knows well, thanks to their cult-favorite snail mucin, COSRX has a wide array of great products in its roster. This extremely hydrating serum features six peptides to target different skin issues, such as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 to smooth fine lines and support firmness, and H-Polypeptide-121 to boost collagen production and plump the look of your skin.

    Let's Get Specific

When searching for products, sometimes you just want to make things easy and grab something that promises the exact solution you're looking for. These serums, one for the under-eye area and one for the face overall, are marketed specifically for mature skin (or skin that will mature someday—everyone's will!) with wrinkle-fighting ingredients.

"Anti-Wrinkle Serum"? Okay, sounds good. Silky and super hydrating, this K-beauty go-to for mature skin features a hefty dose of antioxidants (its namesake ingredient is full of them [what ingredient is that? black rice?]) to nourish and soothe the skin while protecting against environmental stressors. It also gently exfoliates and strengthens the skin barrier overall.

To take control of her skin, she attended skin school in Korea, and finally discovered the knowledge, techniques, and Korean Beauty product technologies that allowed her to transform it. For the past 20 years, she has continued to study skincare ingredients and Korean Skincare techniques while also obtaining her NY Esthetician license and cultivating her own unique and effective skincare treatments.
