Everything We Know About 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' Season 2
Prime Video's sexy spy series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine is set to return—but season 2 will look very different.

The highly anticipated Mr. and Mrs. Smith remake series landed on Prime Video in January 2024—and it quickly proved to be one of the best TV shows of the year. Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the comedic spy-thriller is a reimagined version of the 2005 action movie starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. This time, instead of working for competing agencies, John (Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) are strangers partnered in an arranged spy marriage under a mysterious entity. They must complete missions together and balance their burgeoning relationship with the demands of their handler. The series puts a more relatable spin on the sexy espionage story, showing the minutiae, squabbles, and injuries behind glamorous covert activities. And if Erskine and Glover's impressive performances weren't enough, season 1 also included a laundry list of fun guest stars, including Paul Dano, Parker Posey, Sarah Paulson, and Michaela Coel.
All eight Mr. and Mrs. Smith episodes were released on Prime Video at once, which was both good news and bad news for anyone prone to devouring a delightful watch and immediately regretting that once it's over. Thankfully, the series was renewed in May 2024—which all but made sense, considering it was among Prime Video's all-time top five new series debuts. However, at the time, it was unclear how many changes the show would undergo, considering the somewhat ambiguous ending involving season 1 stars Glover and Erskine's characters.
Two years later, and more news is starting to trickle out about Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2—including how different it might look going forward. Below, we're breaking down everything we know.

Which of the cast members will return for 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' season 2?
Though Mr. and Mrs. Smith will get a second life, it's unclear if Glover and Erskine's spy couple, John and Jane Smith, will get the same chance. On the same day as the renewal announcement, Variety reported that the season 1 stars are not expected to return for season 2. Prime Video declined to comment on the outlet's sourcing, but if it's true, we can only hope that the Smiths escaped the deadly shoot-out from the season 1 finale and now have to lay low in Tahiti.
It's still unclear whether Maya Erskine and Glover will be back on screen in season 2.
Who are the new cast members in 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' season 2?
As more news about season 2 has come out, it's become clear that it'll shift its focus to a new Mr. and Mrs. Smith couple. After a long, highly anticipated wait, we finally learned who the new Smiths are! In early December 2024, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Anora breakout Mark Eydelshteyn will lead season 2 as the new John. No additional details were revealed.
The news followed Eydelshteyn's big breakout year, as the Oscar-winning Sean Baker film Anora marked the Russian actor's first major American role (and turned him into the internet's latest crush). Could this mean we're in for a season about Russian espionage in America or even set in Moscow? We'll have to wait and see!
He'll star opposite Sophie Thatcher. News of the Yellowjackets actress's casting came shortly after in winter 2025. Like her co-star, Thatcher has rapidly ascended in the past few years, with roles in buzzy A24 movies and blockbusters, like Companion. And similarly, no information was revealed regarding her character or the plot.

According to Deadline, a handful of names are also rumored guest stars: Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura (likely reprising his role from season 1), and Gael García Bernal. We'll have to see who actually makes an appearance!
Glover will continue to be involved with season 2—at least behind the scenes.
When will 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' season 2 be released?
That's the big question—and it may still be a while before Mr. and Mrs. Smith hits the air. In early September 2025, Deadline reported that production "has been pushed." At the time, the reasoning was unclear, aside from "cast issues," presumably due to scheduling. In 2026, however, it was revealed that the show had also found a new showrunner.
According to Deadline, Severance writer and Beef executive producer Anna Ouyang Moench will now lead, taking the reins from series creator Sloane, who was tapped to helm season 2 when it was announced. (Sloane is now moving over to HBO to work on Big Little Lies season 3.) The outlet reported that Glover is still involved and some of the season is written, so fingers crossed pre-production continues to move along swimming. Filming is currently planned for sometime in spring or summer 2026, so if the schedule goes according to plan, we may see new episodes in winter/spring 2027.

What will 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' season 2 be about?
With Prime Video and the rest of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith team shrouding the season 2 plot in mystery, everything at this time is just speculation. However, we know that it will follow a new set of Smiths played by Eydelshteyn and Thatcher. The show may even relocate from N.Y.C. to be set in another stunning locale. (It definitely doesn't seem like a coincidence that star Eydelshtey's first language is Russian!)
The season 1 story could continue in some form, though. It's possible that the new couple could work under "Hi hi," or perhaps we'll finally find out who the handler is. Plus, if Moura and Posey were to return, they could serve as both mentors and eventual finalizers. The possibilities (and dream castings for guest stars) are endless.
