Dearest reader, it gives me great honor to inform you that Netflix's Bridgerton has made it halfway through its potential tenure. In January 2026, the beloved book-to-series adaptation aired its fourth season, centered on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek's (Yerin Ha) fairytale romance. With the couple's happy ending on February 23, Bridgerton has now adapted half of its source novels by Julia Quinn, while also extending a fan-favorite subplot past the book timeline.

Of course, we Bridgerton fans are ravenous; just because we've recently been fed doesn't mean we're not eager for the next course. Thankfully, the Netflix original's future is already confirmed, and fans can expect regular dispatches on the upcoming installment, from highly anticipated castings to updates from the set to plenty of first-look images and teasers. Below, we're tracking every update and clue on Bridgerton season 5 so far.

(In the meantime, we've rounded up several shows like Bridgerton, as well as books like Bridgerton, to entertain you as you wait.)

Has 'Bridgerton' been renewed for a fifth season?

Yes! The Netflix romance series was renewed for seasons 5 and 6 simultaneously. The streaming giant announced the good news via a Whistledown column in the lead-up to season 4.

As for the future of the series, executive producer Shonda Rhimes confirmed in January 2025 that she plans for Bridgerton to last eight seasons, one for each sibling. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, she also teased that there's "a possibility for spinoffs" in the future, following Queen Charlotte.

When will 'Bridgerton' season 5 come out?

It's official: The two-year wait between Bridgerton seasons is a thing of the past! In May 2026, Netflix announced that season 5 will premiere on the streamer in 2027, marking the shortest hiatus of the period romance show's history.

Ahead of season 4, showrunner Jess Brownell shared that the series had been trying to "speed up" production, including building a permanent Georgian back lot at Shepperton Studios outside of London. The Bridgerton backlot officially opened for the filming of season 4, which began in September 2024.

Fast-forward to March 24, 2026, and Netflix announced that Bridgerton season 5 has begun filming, less than a month after season 4's conclusion. (For reference, there were four months between season 3's release and the start of production on season 4.) Ahead of the announcement, Brownell told TechRadar that season 5 would be underway soon.

"We're really keen to try to pace up our release schedule," she explained in late February. "So with season 5, we're pretty much done already with the scripts. We have finished the writers' room, and I'm just doing a final pass on the finale. We start shooting pretty soon. Those conversations happened as soon as we finished shooting season 4."

Which Julia Quinn book will 'Bridgerton' season 5 adapt?

Dearest readers, it's time to prepare for a wicked love story. Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton season 5 will center on Francesca Sterling (née Bridgerton) and Michaela Sterling. The news dropped with special portraits of stars Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza, along with a summary of season 5's plot.

Per Tudum, "Bridgerton’s first same-gender central romance...begins two years after John’s death, when Francesca decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Francesca’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions."

Before the big reveal, Brownell revealed that sisters Eloise and Francesca would be the leads of the confirmed seasons 5 and 6. Though the season 4 finale's surprise post-credits scene was a nod to the intrigue, we now know that Francesca will take the reins in season 5, with Eloise and Sir Phillip's love story serving as the foundation for season 6.

Season 4 already adapted the start of Francesca's book, When He Was Wicked. The novel begins with the death of her husband, John Sterling, and the subsequent ghosting of his cousin, Michael Sterling. (Of course, in the series, Michael is Michaela, played by Masali Baduza.)

In the book, Francesca and Michael's story continues when they reunite four years later, as Michael returns to London following his travels in India. When Francesca decides to join the marriage mart—seeking a union of convenience rather than true love—she soon comes to see a new side of her former cousin-in-law, leading to one of the most popular love stories among book fans (as well as some of the raciest scenes in the novel series).

Which cast members are returning for 'Bridgerton' season 5?

Though Netflix has not confirmed the full season 5 cast, most of the main players will likely return. This includes Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Hannah Dodd (Francesca Bridgerton), Will Tilston (Gregory Bridgerton), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth Bridgerton), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Hugh Sachs (Brimsley), Daniel Francis (Lord Marcus Anderson), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich), Polly Walker (Portia Featherington), Lorraine Ashbourne (Mrs. Varley), and Julie Andrews (voice of Lady Whistledown).

Now that we know that season 5 will adapt Francesca's novel, Masali Baduza (Michaela Stirling) has been elevated to the installment's co-lead. It's also very likely that Victor Alli (John Stirling) will return in flashbacks, as Francesca and Michaela work through their grief at John's passing.

Speaking to Tudum, Baduza spoke on her character's arc in the upcoming season. "Michaela…really struggles to show vulnerability to people that she doesn’t know, especially because she’s had to hide so many parts of herself," she told the outlet. "She’s used to having all these walls up. I’m excited to tear down those walls and have her let Francesca in. I'm excited for people to see her wanted so deeply and so badly…I’m excited for people to see Michaela yearn for Francesca."

Another cast member who has left fans wondering about her return is Adjoa Andoh, who plays the wonderful Lady Danbury. It takes a while, but in season 4, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) allows Danbury to leave the Ton and travel to her homeland for the first time since her childhood. Thankfully, Brownell confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Andoh will return for season 5.

"You'll see Lady Danbury next season," she said, before teasing Danbury and Charlotte's dynamic in future installments. "I think, for us, it was more about exploring the themes this season of relationships that have a power imbalance and trying to find a way to shake up that power imbalance between Lady Danbury and the Queen. I think after what they've been through this season, it's safe to say that the Queen is finally going to be treating Danbury more as a peer."

And then there's the question of the married Bridgertons, specifically season 2 leads Antony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley), season 3's Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), and season 4's Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha). The couple most likely to return for season 5 is Benophie, since the series likes to give viewers a peek at the previous leads' newlywed arc. But good news: Brownell revealed in an interview with Cinemablend that Benedict will be an important support for both Eloise and Francesca in their upcoming arcs, so you can expect to see more of him.

Although that doesn't mean Penelope will be on screen just as much. During a podcast appearance in late April 2026, Coughlan hinted that she'll have a smaller role in the new episodes. "Season 5 had started filming already, so I won't be in it very much," she said, as reported by E!. "I'm always happy to come back. I think it's a genuinely lovely job to come back to...I have it so good now 'cause I come in for a few days and I'm like, 'Yay! How is everyone? I'll see you in two months. Bye! They're working super super hard, and I'm just like coming back. It's lovely."

There's also been no official word on whether Simone Ashley or Jonathan Bailey will return for season 5. Considering that Ashley and Bailey are now among Hollywood's biggest young stars, it's looking likely that they'll go the way of season 1's Phoebe Dyvenor and Regé-Jean Page.

Who are the new cast members joining 'Bridgerton' season 5?

Netflix has announced three new actors joining the Ton in Francesca and Michaela's season. After the Flood alum Jacqueline Boatswain will play Helen Stirling, Michaela's mother who "seeks to guide—and occasionally push—her daughter through London's social season," per the streamer. Gemma Knight Jones (MobLand, Andor) will also join as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, Michaela's old friend, who relays the intricacies of London's social season.

Meanwhile, Lord Marcus Anderson's family will grow, with Tega Alexander (MobLand, Red Eye) playing Marcus's son Christopher. The younger Anderson is described as "a Regency-era Casanova who could give the Bridgerton bachelors a run for their money. Yet behind his cheeky facade lies a current of self-doubt that threatens to unravel him."

Will the new Whistledown be revealed in 'Bridgerton' season 5?

Season 4 ended with a major cliffhanger: After Penelope retires from Whistledown (and begins work on a novel!), Colin reveals that an entirely different, unknown writer has published a new issue. This means that Bridgerton season 5 will start a show-original Whistledown mystery, and it seems like the writers are planning to milk the secret identity for a while.

"Shonda and I have an idea about who Whistledown is, and that's what we're writing toward," Brownell told Entertainment Weekly. "We'll definitely be planting some clues over the next few seasons for people to hopefully have their own guesses."

She added, "I'll say it won't be revealed in season 5. I can say that we've already finished writing season 5, so beyond that, I can't say for sure, but we will play with the mystery for a little while."

Showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed that Michaela and Francesca will have "a happy ending."

What else has the showrunner said about 'Bridgerton' season 5?

While fans can certainly look to When He Was Wicked for the general plot of season 5, clearly some changes will be made as it's adapted into an LGBTQ+ story. While the new episodes were in production, showrunner Jess Brownell spoke about some of those changes in a June 2026 interview with Shondaland.

Brownell explained that, while crafting the season, the writers spent a lot of time unpacking stereotypes in queer media and how they hoped to avoid that. "It was really important for us to find ways to do something new and not fall into anything that could be harmful," she said. The showrunner explained that they wanted to avoid the "dead lesbian syndrome," in which the relationship is met with tragedy because one person must die. "We knew on this show that we wanted to give Fran and Michaela a happy ending, and they certainly do get one."

Brownell added, "The other huge thing is just about the male gaze. It’s something that we talk about every season, but especially with two female characters, making sure that we’re rooting their emotional and their physical intimacy in the connection between them, in the yearning between them, and in their character growth."

However, don't necessarily expect smooth sailing toward happily-ever-after. The showrunner explained that, while "this is a story about queer joy and not one about queer trauma, it doesn’t mean that our characters won’t face obstacles."

"To take away any obstacles or difficulties would be to strip our characters of agency, and you don’t want to take stakes away from a story," she continued. "I want to feel like they earned their happy ending as every other past lead has."

We certainly trust that they'll do Francesca and Michaela justice! In the meantime, continue to check back, as we'll update this story when more information becomes available.
