'The Diplomat' Season 4: Everything We Know
If you thought Kate and Hal's marriage couldn't get any more tense, think again.
The emotional heart of Netflix's must-watch series The Diplomat is the fiery, complicated relationship between U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her morally dubious husband Hal (Rufus Sewell). By the end of its third installment, which showed both the couple's beginning and their brief separation (in the wake of Hal's new role as Vice President), Kate returns to her husband and recommits herself as his partner-in-crime. But that's before a major betrayal involving President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) changes everything.
With all episodes of season 3 released in fall 2025, viewers may leave their binges wondering whether Kate and Hal's relationship will ever be the same (and, you know, whether World War III is on the horizon). Has 'The Diplomat' been renewed for season 4?
Yes! Netflix announced the political thriller's early renewal back in May 2025, five months before season 3 arrived on the platform. The happy news was revealed during the streamer's Upfront presentation in N.Y.C., as reported by Variety.
When will 'The Diplomat' season 4 be released?
Get ready for an autumn full of intrigue. In mid-August, Netflix announced in a press release that The Diplomat season 4 will premiere on October 15. The political thriller has been one of the rare Netflix series to debut a new season every year, with season 1 arriving in April 2023, season 2 in October 2024, and season 3 in October 2025.
The Penns (Bradley Whitford and Janney) will come even more into the fold in season 4.
Which of the cast members will return for 'The Diplomat' season 4?
Diplomat fans, prepare to see a lot more of the Penns! Netflix has revealed that Allison Janney (President Grace Penn) and Bradley Whitford (Todd Penn) have been upped to series regulars for season 4. After season 3's ending cliffhanger—and the one cute domestic scene we got with the First Couple—we're excited to see more of the West Wing alums!
It should come as no surprise that their presence becomes contentious for other characters...which should be all the more fun for fans. Whitford teased what viewers can expect about his arc in a March 2026 interview with Deadline, saying, "Either my character doesn’t want to be there, or the other characters don’t want my character to be there." Sounds exactly like the drama we want from The Diplomat!
In addition to Janney and Whitford, all of the main cast will return for The Diplomat season 4, including Keri Russell (Kate Wyler), Rufus Sewell (Hal Wyler), Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford), Ali Ahn (Eidra Park), David Gyasi (Austin Dennison), Rory Kinnear (Nicol Trowbridge), and Nana Mensah (Billie Appiah).
Mensah will be featured even more prominently. Shortly after season 3's release, Deadline reported that Mensah has been upped from recurring to a series regular in the forthcoming installment. It makes sense, considering the White House Chief of Staff works alongside President Grace Penn, whom she previously tried to oust from her Vice Presidency role, and we'll be seeing more of Penn going forward. We'll have to wait and see what kind of moves she's making behind the scenes next.
Meanwhile, the teaser revealed that Poldark star Aidan Turner will reprise his role as Callum Ellis, though it's yet to be confirmed if The Pitt alum Tracy Ifeachor will return as Thema.
Edra Park (Ali Ahn) and Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford) are among the returning cast.
What will 'The Diplomat' season 4 be about?
Netflix has released an official synopsis: "In season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the U.S. and U.K., as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home."
It seems season 4 will pick up directly after season 3, as fans may recall that the previous finale ended with U.S. President Grace Penn and V.P. Hal Wyler's undiplomatic maneuvering. After Trowbridge accepts Kate's compromise and agrees to bury the Poseidon, a Russian "doomsday weapon" off the coast of England, the ecstatic ambassador (who spent episode 7 realizing that she may have been blaming Hal for her own baggage) declares that she wants to join Hal in D.C. and give their partnership another try. Soon after, Callum lets Kate know that the warhead has gone mysteriously missing. All it takes is some paranoid prodding from Todd for her to connect the dots: Grace and Hal stole the Poseidon, which will definitely piss off the U.K. and Russia. Hal makes Kate vow to keep her mouth shut, and viewers are left wondering what our betrayed heroine will do next.
Tensions with the U.K. will continue in the forthcoming episodes.
Speaking to Tudum, creator Deborah Cahn was quite ominous while teasing what's next for the series. When asked if viewers should be concerned about what comes next, she answered, "They should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about...Hal and Grace are playing with matches in somebody else’s house. The repercussions are not going to only land on America—they’re going to land on another country. It’s really going to make a lot of people unhappy."
We now know that season 4 will follow Kate as she deals with both Hal's ethical betrayal and the prospect that two loose cannons are running America. (Remember, Grace was behind the HMS Courageous explosion, and Hal is, well, Hal.) "[They] are two really powerful, dynamic people who are feeding off of each other’s intellect and intensity," Cahn added. "When two people are pushing the gas at the same time, and nobody’s got their foot on the brake—it’s scary."
More recently, Cahn teased in a press release, "This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd. They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd."
Is there a trailer for 'The Diplomat' season 4?
Prepare yourself for a "spicy" season. And we didn't just say it: Kate Wyler said it herself! In the first teaser that Netflix dropped to unveil the season 4 premiere date, the politician tries to cozy back up to her husband. "I'm not trying to get out of the marriage. I’m trying to get back in," she says to her husband. "We do high highs and really low lows. The fights are gonna be spicy." Though he says, "You can't keep doing this to me," it looks as though they renew their vows ("For better and for worse...and worse").
However, season 4's full trailer (seen above) hints that "for better and worse" will be easier said than done. We see Kate share her concern about the "dangerous" team of Hal and Grace, while Todd worries that the presidency has changed his wife. In fact, Todd decides that he needs a change of scenery. "I need a job that takes me away. Maybe London," he says via voiceover. Who else is now extremely excited to tune in and see the conflict between the world leaders and their First Spouses?
