'We Were Liars' Season 2: Everything We Know

Prime Video's teen drama We Were Liars arrived in June 2025, just in time for our summer binge-watches. Based on E. Lockhart's book of the same name—which was first released in 2014 before getting a #BookTok resurgence—the rich-people-behaving-badly series centers on the Sinclair family, a wealthy American family that vacations on the fictional island of Beachwood (near Martha's Vineyard) every summer. In the year that eldest grandchild Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) turns 16, a life-altering tragedy leaves an amnesiac Cadence struggling to piece together what happened.

We Were Liars's eight-episode season comes to a dramatic conclusion with a jaw-dropping twist that reveals the truth behind Cadence's central mystery. However, though viewers do get answers, the TV adaptation may not be done bringing Lockhart's novels to life. Read on for everything we know about a possible We Were Liars season 2 so far.

Has 'We Were Liars' been renewed for season 2?

After months of speculation, Prime Video confirmed that We Were Liars will return for season 2. The good news arrived on September 17, 2025.

"We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans," co-creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up."

Lockhart added that the writers have "big, big plans for season 2, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen—and a lot of surprises as well."

Since premiering in late June 2025, Prime Video has offered hints that it was preparing for more episodes. While speaking with Variety in late July, Vernon Sanders, the co-head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, shared how pleased Prime Video has been with the show's performance—it quickly rose to the top of Prime Video's Top 10 list upon its release—and confirmed the series did tease at the plot of book two in the finale. He also revealed that writers were working on more episodes, which sounded very promising.

When will 'We Were Liars' season 2 be released?

There is no confirmed season 2 premiere date yet. But fans may have a short wait for new episodes of We Were Liars. Season 1 of the teen mystery series was reportedly filmed between June and September 2024, before it arrived on streaming in June 2025. With casting on the new installment underway, if the show goes into production in mid-2026, season 2 could arrive in early 2027.

What will 'We Were Liars' season 2 be about?

In the season 1 finale, all of the big questions of the first installment of We Were Liars are answered. Cadence finally remembers that she and her fellow Liars set fire to their grandfather's mansion, Clairmont, which they saw as the symbol of all the family's pain. Besides Cadence, all of the Liars died in the fire, with Gat running back into the mansion thinking Cady was in danger. For the entire Summer '17 timeline, whenever she was talking to the Liars, they had been hallucinations or ghosts.

It also turns out that her grandfather, Harris, the harsh and racist family patriarch, knew that the Liars had set the fire. He'd kept the secret to save face and was planning to name Cadence the heir to the Sinclair family if she kept the lie. However, Cadence decides to disinherit herself, leaving her family's lies behind.

In the season's final twist, viewers learn that Cadence wasn't the only family member who saw the Liar ghosts throughout Summer '17. The final scene follows her aunt Carrie, who struggles with her sobriety throughout the season, as she enters her home to see her dead son, Johnny. "I thought you left," she tells him, to which he replies, "I don’t think I can."

As book fans know, the Carrie twist sets up the plot of E. Lockhart's second book in the series, Family of Liars. The prequel novel goes back to when the Sinclair sisters Carrie, Penny, and Bess were kids, and centers on the young Carrie as she deals with her own ghosts. Family of Liars is also the first book to mention the fourth Sinclair sister, Rosemary, whose existence and mysterious death were referenced in the series's first season.

Prime Video has since confirmed that is the direction season 2 will take—while intertwining with the present—in a season 2 logline: "In an effort to confront her truth, Cadence returns to Beechwood. As she digs deeper into family secrets, she learns about the Sinclair Sisters’ summer of 1999—a summer rife with first love, rivalry, and even murder. In flashbacks, we see Carrie, Penny, and Bess navigate their own teenage summer, as they come to terms with their past in the present day."

Who will be in the new cast for 'We Were Liars' season 2?

Considering the amount of bloodshed at the end of We Were Liars season 1, and the fact that season 2 will be both a prequel and partially set in contemporary times, fans can expect major casting switch-ups. While we know Emily Alyn Lind will reprise her role as Cadence, new stars will bring the 1999 timeline to life.

Variety reported the first crop of fresh faces filling out the '90s cast in early May 2026, while Deadline shared even more names in late June 2026. Expect to see lots of younger Sinclairs, their friends (and lovers), extended family, and more. Here's what we know so far:

• CJosh Dallas (Manifest) stars as young Harris Sinclair, who is described as "charming, well-heeled, and dedicated to raising his daughters to honor the family name. While he has "command of a media empire," he still "finds himself cast in the shadow of his even more charming—and far more reckless—older brother."
• Costa D’Angelo (Tell Me Lies) will play Pfeff, a character who is only in the prequel and "a New England college kid with a mysterious edge." While "he doesn’t really intend to upend the Sinclair sisters’ lives," it's inevitable.
• Parker Lapaine (House of the Dragon) will portray young Carrie Sinclair, who is "sensitive" and "obedient," but finds her Harvard-bound plans derailed by a new love interest who "tempts her with a very different kind of future."
• Peyton List (School Spirits) is taking on young Tipper Sinclair, the picture-perfect matriarch with "effortless grace and old-money elegance."
• Elysia Roorbach (The Pitt) will be young Penny Sinclair, whose "Perfect Penny" mask hides her struggles with mental health and body image.
• Madison Wolfe (The Hunting Wives) will play young Bess Sinclair, who has big, artistic ambitions at 16. With new neighbor boys on the island, she will reportedly "do anything to impress them…including some things she’ll live to regret."
• The youngest Sinclair, Rosemary, will be portrayed by Layla Douglas. This summer is different for the whimsical little one, who feels cast aside as her older sisters and cousins become more boy crazy than ever before.
• Madeleine Arthur joins as the Sinclairs' cousin Yardley, who is "magnetic, worldly, and elegant-beyond-her-years," and brings boys in tow with her to Beechwood for the summer.
• Meanwhile, we'll see adult Yardley in the present as well. In the modern timeline, she's played by Riley Voelkel and is coming to "raise hell" after being exiled years ago.
• One of the boys Yardley brings is George Bryce-Amory, the son of a Texan oil dynasty, who is said to be entitled, though not quite posh, but still big-hearted, loyal, and a partier. Aidan Shaw plays him.
• Callan Potter plays Gideon, another charming young man in Beechwood: the islands' "sought-after tennis coach." While he has an in with the elite, it's said that "no one suspects his more sinister intentions."
• Jaelynn Thora Brooks has been cast as sweet, empathetic school friend Erin Riegert.
• And finally, Shaun Sipos joins as Dean, notably Harris' brother, who is "an influential Democrat with an eye on a Senate seat."

Who from the 'We Were Liars' season 1 cast will return?

As stated, Cadence herself will reappear—and E. Lockhart has confirmed a few other present-day names we can expect to see again. It's yet to be confirmed just how many fan favorites will return, but the author has stressed that "there will be new stories about our current cast." She said as much during a November 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Lockhard explained, "The prequel novel is a flashback to when the mom characters are teenagers. So you will see a whole story about that, but you will still see Cadence, you will still see Johnny, and you will still see all those sisters as adults, and the showrunners are cooking up new stories for them."

So, with that in mind, we can assume we'll see Joseph Zada as Johnny, and the adult sisters Bess, Penny, and Carrie, played by Candice King, Caitlin Fitzgerald, and Mamie Gummer, respectively.

What have the cast and crew said about 'We Were Liars' season 2?

As hinted by all of the Family of Lies Easter eggs that made it into the TV series, showrunner Julie Plec has teased big plans for We Were Liars season 2. In an interview with Deadline, the Vampire Diaries alum explained that the TV series's final scene leads directly into the start of the prequel book.

"If you take a look at Family of Liars, you will see in Chapter One that Carrie has all along been having conversations with her dead son, and it does beg the question, 'Is she too, just so psychologically damaged that this is how she hallucinates her grief? And is that what happened to Cadence?' or 'Are ghosts real on Beechwood Island?'" she said. "Season 2 dives deeper into that question."

Plec also explained that the show dropped ominous hints throughout the season, directing viewers to think about the mothers's pasts. "What’s so wonderful is by the end of the season, we’ve gotten to know these Sinclair sisters as moms and as grown women who are deeply flawed, and they keep hinting at tension and trauma from the past, all season long, up to and including in the end, when Bess says, 'Do you think this is punishment for what we did this summer I was 16?'" she said. "And lo and behold, if that’s not the summer that’s talked about in the prequel Family of Liars. So you can bide your time in between seasons reading it, and you can write Amazon letters about how much you need [a second season.]"
