Why Henry Cavill Left 'The Witcher,' Explained

Netflix's fantasy epic The Witcher returned for its fourth season on October 30, 2025, resuming the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan) after over two years. Though the TV adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's book series is six years into its run, season 4 marks a new beginning for the show. Netflix confirmed in October 2022 that The Witcher would return for season 4 with Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt, with both Cavill and Hemsworth sharing statements on Instagram regarding the recasting.

"My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4," Cavill wrote. "In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

While Cavill didn't give a deeper explanation for his departure at the time, rumors quickly swirled, with speculation ranging from creative differences with the producers to possible scheduling conflicts. In the same week that the news dropped, Cavill announced that he would return to the DC cinematic universe as Superman, after making a post-credits appearance in Black Adam.

However, just two months later, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was announced as the new co-CEO of DC Studios, and the company chose to reboot Superman rather than bring Cavill back. (Pearl actor David Corenswet took up the Superman mantle, with his film eventually becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2025 as of late October). Cavill's final appearance as Superman was a mid-credits cameo in 2022's Black Adam.

What has 'The Witcher' cast and crew said about Cavill's departure?

Following Cavill's final episodes in The Witcher season 3, part 2, showrunner Lauren Hissrich briefly opened up about the actor's departure while ensuring that Geralt would remain as a central character. "It was time for [Cavill] in his life to move on," Hissrich said in May 2023. "I think we’ve all been mourning this in our own way. We had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. [But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell."

"If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either," she continued.

In September 2025, Hissrich shared more context for Cavill's exit in an Entertainment Weekly piece, explaining that his departure had been in the works "for a while." She also dismissed the creative-difference rumors.

"He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to," she told the outlet. "And for us, you don't want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don't want to do. I think that's why it felt like a really symbiotic decision."

"I cried," star Anya Chalotra said of her reaction to the news. "I remember it so vividly. It really impacted me. We were so bonded to these people, and to lose such an important member of the team…I've put everything into this character. I started [Witcher] having not much work under my belt, and this show means the world to me. So it hurt."

Freya Allan added, "He was Geralt for Ciri for so long and that's sad to let that go, but I was also really excited to see what Liam's done with the role...Me, Anya, Joey [Batey, who plays Jaskier], we're all still here. Some of Ciri's most exciting storylines are really coming to fruition in season 5. It's good to remind people that there's still the original people, and there's something exciting to be able to see a new version of that Geralt character."

What has Liam Hemsworth said about joining 'The Witcher?'

The Entertainment Weekly piece also included Hemsworth's first comments about joining the fantasy series. According to the outlet, Hemsworth has been a vocal fan of source video games for a long time, and he was the first actor Hissrich spoke to about the role.

"It came out of nowhere," he said of his initial reaction to the job offer. "I was as surprised as anyone...I'm a massive fan of Henry's, and I'm a fan of what he did in the show."

He shared more of his thoughts in an interview with Radio Times. "When I first got approached, I was pretty reluctant at that point. [I had] a lot of concerns and questions about it all. I was a big fan of the video game and then I watched the series, and was a fan of the series, and I read the books."

"Just the situation [of] coming into a series that's already established a really passionate fanbase. I appreciate these fans, and I appreciate the fact that they care so much about it," he added. "I think if I wasn't a fan myself, if I didn't care about it, I wouldn't have come on board. The reason I came on board was because I was a fan, and because I thought that I could do justice to this character. I thought that could bring an interesting interpretation to this part of the story."

How does 'The Witcher' season 4 introduce Liam Hemsworth as Geralt?

Warning: Light spoilers for The Witcher season 4 ahead. The season 4 premiere of The Witcher introduces our new Geralt of Rivia with a bit of revisionist history. The episode flashes back to some of the series's iconic scenes—including Geralt's fight with the Kikimore monster in season 1, and the first group hug with him, Yennefer, and Ciri—with Hemsworth as Geralt in place of Cavill.

The premiere also introduces a new framing device. 100 years after The Witcher's main timeline, an old man tells a group of children the story of Geralt, but one young girl named Nimue (Sha Dessi) has notes about his accuracy. It appears that Hemsworth's Rivia is her version of the legend. Not only is she a superfan of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, but she also thinks that her destiny will intertwine with theirs. As fans of the books know, this hunch isn't too far off.

All this comprises the first eight minutes of season 4's premiere, where the show introduces our new Geralt, sets up some important plot points, and calls back to the importance of oral storytelling in Andrzej Sapkowski's original book series.
