These Black Boots Practically Style Themselves

Ask me which cold-weather shoes have a special place in my heart, and I’ll just as soon declare my enduring love for black boots. (In fact, I’m wearing one of my many pairs right now!) Like other fashion folks, I view black boots as non-negotiable wardrobe staples. Thanks to their flattering neutral shade, the streamlined style will anchor any winter uniform—from work outfits to going-out getups.

There are plenty of categories to consider, of course. You can never go wrong with the classics—like sleek knee-high boots, elegant ankle-grazing silhouettes, and practical lug-sole alternatives. And while I certainly cherish these essentials, I’ve also gravitated toward the latest boot trends. Grungy biker boots, rodeo-ready cowboy boots, and striking thigh-high boots have recently appeared on the runways of Miu Miu, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren. And now, these styles have made their way onto my wishlist.

Needless to say, I’m head over heels for black boots, and the same goes for my colleagues at Marie Claire. Ahead, we've curated a handpicked list of the investment-worthy shoes we can’t get enough of and those we’re coveting. There's something for everyone, from affordable brands like Sam Edelman to luxury labels like Khaite.

Knee-High Boots

While some shoe trends are fleeting, knee-high boots have always maintained an unwavering appeal. Staud’s Wally boots are among the fashion crowd’s most treasured styles, and I’ve recently acquired a pair (their blade heels and pointy tips add an irresistible touch of sophistication). Alohas’ Isobel boots also rank high on my must-have list, especially since I can wear these comfortable, secure square-toed boots for hours.

If I’m in the mood for flat shoes, I’ll opt for Reformation’s Franklin boots. Crafted with barely-there heels and supple Vachetta leather, these riding boots embody comfort to the fullest. The high shaft and side buckles offer an English country-style charm I absolutely adore.

As for other low-to-the-ground options, Fashion Features Editor Emma Childs recommends Khaite’s Marfa boots. “Every time I wear them—which is at least once a week, with everything from tailored Bermuda shorts to boho-style maxi skirts—they quite literally put a pep in my step,” she says. “Yes, these boots are an undeniable splurge, but considering they're feel-good empowerment in the form of a shoe, it's one worth making.”

Moto Boots

Decorated with edgy metal hardware and rugged leather, moto-style harness boots will shake up any dull outfit. Coach's take on the style is made from treated leather to give it that worn-in look right out of the box, while Tony Bianco's rise up all the way to mid-calf.

If you’d like to take things up a notch, try the 3.1 Phillip Lim and Frye versions. Designed with extra buckles, both styles are ideal for making a not-so-subtle footwear statement.

Ankle Boots

Black boots cut with ankle-skimming shapes often lend themselves to a variety of outfits. I’ve been religiously styling Other Stories’ best-selling ankle boots with relaxed trousers and upscale satin slip skirts. I've also got my eyes on Aeyde's booties, with their smooth buffed nappa exterior and thick block heel.

Meanwhile, Associate Commerce Editor Brooke Knappenberger recommends Sam Edelman’s Margo Booties. “I wear them multiple times per week, especially alongside denim bottoms,” she says. “I simply love the look of a chic kitten heel peeking out beneath a pair of straight-leg jeans.”

To top off her cold-weather looks, Fashion E-Commerce Editor Julia Marzovilla depends on Schutz’s Dellia Booties. “They have a slender fit throughout the ankle, so they pair beautifully with my outfits,” she notes. “Plus, they’ve held up for quite some time, so I would suggest these durable shoes if you’re looking for boots that will last for the long haul.”

Thigh-High Boots

Thigh-high boots really emerged across several Fall 2024 runways (including Chloé, Fendi, and Gucci), and they've continued their takeover in 2025. Marzovilla embraces this maximalist style with her trusty over-the-knee boots from Stuart Weitzman. “Not only are these leather boots trendy, but they’ve also carried me through plenty of bone-chilling winters in New York City,” she says.

Consider keeping your legs nice and warm with Larroude’s Bergen boots, made with suede panels and water-resistant leather. And if you prefer a bit of height, Tony Bianco and Jeffrey Campbell offer sky-high heels with a dose of drama.

Short Lug Sole Boots

Whether you’re leaning toward combat boots or Chelsea boots, there’s no doubt that durability defines both lug sole styles. Marie Claire’s former Junior Visual Designer Jonelle Afurong has held onto the same pair of Dr. Martens lace-up boots for nearly a decade. “They’re my tried-and-true black boots,” she says. “These hard-working shoes have remained intact through every kind of rigorous occasion—from standing on my feet all day while attending an outdoor festival to roaming around the cobblestone streets of Italy during a trip abroad.”

Expand your collection of combats with Red Wing's moc-style boots, which will also withstand wear and tear. If you wish to forgo laces, try slip-on Chelsea boots from Mango and Loeffler Randall. Both shoes flaunt standard features like pull tabs, elasticated side panels, and well-built rubber soles, all of which prioritize functionality.

Cowboy Boots

Western-inspired fashion is experiencing a modern renaissance, and cowboy boots undoubtedly lead the charge. Perhaps we can credit this comeback to stylish celebrities like Bella Hadid, Katie Holmes, and Beyoncé, who have all recently co-signed the resurgence of equestrian footwear.

Follow suit with horse-girl styles from Isabel Marant, DV Dolce Vita, and Raye, which showcase straightforward silhouettes and pared-down detailing.
