During the Spring 2025 fashion week circuit, maxi skirts were seen on countless catwalks. Carolina Herrera showcased A-line silhouettes adorned with polished floral prints, Hermès embraced the naked dressing trend with sheer options for a bold take, and Fiorucci tapped into Y2K nostalgia by enveloping its version in dark-wash denim. While some might attribute the resurgence of the maxi skirt trend to a general interest in floor-sweeping designs, others might argue that these lengthy garments symbolize a need for some security in fashion and elsewhere.

Though it may seem far-fetched, Marie Claire’s senior news editor Halie LeSavage will tell you that there’s actually a tenable link between dropping hemlines and falling stock prices. LeSavage identifies maxi skirts as recession indicators, a term in economics that describes a measure signifying a potential or current financial crisis. She references the “hemline index,” a theory suggesting that skirt length frequently aligns with economic trends. Essentially, during optimistic times, mini skirts thrive, while during downturns, skirt lengths increase.

While the hemline index is highly debated, there’s no denying that maxi skirts rival thigh-grazing minis in 2025. Beyond the runways, accessible labels like Madewell, Reformation, and Aritzia are celebrating this elongated style. Meanwhile, celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Katie Holmes are already pairing maxis with breezy spring staples like sharp blazers and ladylike Mary Janes.

    Denim Maxi Skirts

Spring 2025 runway, denim skirtsamp;mdash; Acne Studios, Fiorucci, Opamp;eacute;raSPORT

Early aughts fashion took center stage at Acne Studios, Fiorucci, and OpéraSPORT, where ankle-length denim skirts reigned supreme.

Y2K style enthusiasts will be pleased to know that free-flowing denim maxi skirts are once again stealing the hearts of designers. Acne Studios, Fiorucci, and OpéraSPORT all appear to be enamored with the laid-back look, and now it’s your turn to give it a try. Opt for medium wash alternatives from Frame and Agolde, or choose dark with Madewell’s option saturated in a deep indigo hue.

Every year, florals make their annual appearance in the trend cycle, and this season is no exception. Moschino, Max Mara, and Hermès celebrated curves with tight maxi skirts crafted from luxe, figure-hugging fabric.
