Our favorite jeans may be wardrobe mainstays, but that doesn't mean we can't be tempted by something new. As we start reaching for early fall fashion pieces, switching up your denim is an easy way to get into the season—and right now, we're looking beyond the medium-blue jeans that anchor so many of our go-to outfits.

Color is an especially easy way to think more fall-forward when it's still a little too toasty for heavy layers. Ecru, brown, and gray jeans pair naturally with the first pieces we're bringing back into rotation, from lightweight jackets and button-downs to suede accessories, which make an easy early-fall swap for summer bags and shoes.

Barrel jeans remain the it shape, while baggier pairs feel a little more polished in darker tones. Classic straight legs and even slimmer straight fits are showing up again, and their cleaner lines look particularly great with loafers and flats before it's time to break out the boots.

Once actual layers become necessary, deeper denim feels right. Inky indigo and black are the tones of the moment, pairing perfectly with the sweaters we'll soon be living in, while rich colors like burgundy make an otherwise simple knit-and-jeans combination much more interesting. Wide-leg and trouser-inspired jeans are also leaning more elevated this season, with structured shapes and details like pleats that make denim a polished alternative to tailored pants for work.

Ahead, shop the fresh denim washes, colors, and silhouettes we're reaching for this fall.
