Much ado has been made about Kamala Harris, her Tiffany earrings, and her custom Chloé suits. Can you blame us? It feels like the closest we’ve ever come to having a fashion person on the ballot. Close your eyes and consider the implications: There is a world where we, as a country, come out of the 2024 election cycle—which ends tonight, Nov. 5—with a president who (among other qualities) wears Christopher John Rogers.

Even as a district attorney in the ‘90s, Kamala Harris was a stylish woman. But particularly since July—when the vice president launched her 2024 presidential campaign—Harris has been gradually stepping up her work wardrobe. So far, the narrative arc of her campaign wardrobe has been subtle but impactful breaks with tradition. Whereas Hillary Clinton chose to almost exclusively wear Ralph Lauren, an American heritage brand, during her 2016 presidential campaign, Harris has been tapping the likes of women-led French label Chloé and Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung for her campaign’s key moments. (She has reportedly hired stylist Leslie Fremar to pull each look.) She's also explored fresh colors, from powder blue suits to black sequin gala dresses and varying shades of purple. And in the final stretch of the campaign, Harris traded her full-on suits for relaxed flare jeans with her strong-shouldered blazers. (Relatable!)

What Harris is serving, in other words, is an eclectic mix that more closely resembles the way women actually shop and get dressed in their everyday lives—with all the formality and elegance the highest offices in the country demand.

At her final rally before Election Day—an event which drew thousands to Philadelphia's Center City—Kamala Harris took the stage alongside a star-studded lineup that included remarks from Oprah Winfrey and a guest performance by Lady Gaga. She wore a black jeans cinched with a black leather belt and a matching black blazer with gold buttons for the occasion.

The crowning jewel of her election eve look, though, was her trusty Irene Neuwirth gumball pearl necklace. Harris's penchant for pearls stems from her time in Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the sorority she joined at Howard University. The beads have since become the defining detail of her campaign wardrobe, drawing a clear visual line from her storied past to her history-making present.

On Oct. 29, in Washington, D.C., Kamala Harris delivered what she called her "closing argument" to win the American electorate's votes this November. Her remarks were staged at an oval-shaped park in front of the Washington Monument—the same place where former President Donald Trump gave a speech that incited the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. The moment called for styling that reflected all the nuance of the moment: her hopes for the future of the United States and her concerns should citizens cast their votes for her opponent.

Harris ultimately nodded to both political history and her campaign trail outfit signatures. Beneath a black blazer, she wore a draped, high-neck blouse in brilliant white. Her white top evoked the tradition of suffragettes, and then female politicians throughout history, wearing the same shade while campaigning for equal rights. Meanwhile, her straightforward suiting separates matched the many blazers and trousers she has worn throughout her campaign.

After starting the day campaigning in Philadelphia in a coordinating coat and brown dress, Vice President Harris changed into a blazer, T-shirt, and flare jeans. Combined with her signature strands of pearls and a pointed-toe pump, these pieces were a more business-casual take on her election wardrobe. Fitting, for more down-to-earth campaign stops including a visit to a West Philadelphia barber shop and an address at a nighttime rally.

Kamala Harris attended a "Souls to the Polls" push in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 27, held at the Church of Christian Compassion. To respect the modest dress codes of a more religious setting, the Vice President went for a brown sheath dress with a coordinating, tailored top coat to match. Her signature double-strand of pearls and a pair of smart black pumps finished the look.

Oct. 26: Kamala Harris Campaigns in a Tan Zip-Up Jacket and Trousers

Kamala Harris campaigned in Michigan with Michelle Obama in a more relaxed version of her go-to tailored suiting.

The Harris-Walz campaign hit another style peak on Saturday, Oct. 26, when Vice President Harris campaigned in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with former first lady Michelle Obama. She chose a more laid-back take on her usual suiting separates, in the form of a zip-up jacket with a wide collar and matching single-pleat pants. The suit's tan colorway allowed Harris to present a sartorially united front with Obama, who wore a custom tortoiseshell print suit by Theory with the same shade as its base.

Oct. 25: Kamala Harris Joins Beyoncé in a Plum Blazer and Meaningful Blouse

What does a presidential candidate wear to accept an endorsement from Beyoncé? Kamala Harris's Houston, Texas, rally look met the moment with an eggplant purple blazer and a pussy-bow blouse. The striped shirt was a significant choice for a rally emphasizing women's rights and reproductive freedoms: In recent decades, tops tied with a long bow at the collar have been adopted by women politicians as a symbol of resistance and confidence.

Oct. 24: Kamala Harris Rallies in a Coconut Brown Blazer

Kamala Harris continued campaigning in Atlanta, Georgia, in late October.

With less than two weeks to go until the 2024 election, Kamala Harris decided to bring her greatest campaign trail outfit hits back out on the road. She co-hosted a rally with former President Barack Obama in Atlanta, Georgia, wearing a light brown blazer—most likely, the jacket from her previously worn Chloé separates in the shade "coconut," referencing the meme that ignited her early campaign.

Vice President coordinated the jacket with a pair of straight-leg jeans. She also re-wore a double-strand gold and pearl necklace. The entire look was polished and consistent, a sartorial doubling-down on the values she hopes to bring to the highest office in the United States.

Oct. 8: Kamala Harris Tapes 'The Late Show' in a Gray Power Suit

Kamala Harris stopped by The Late Show wearing all her greatest hits.

Kamala Harris had a busy day of press in New York City on Oct. 8. Her last televised interview was a stop by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she stuck to the comfortable classics she knows best: a gray suit, a black crewneck top, black pumps, and a double-layer pearl necklace with stud earrings to match. The Vice President's TV interviews sought to give more Americans a window into her personality and her policies. Naturally, her suit was tailored and polished without distracting from her messages.

Oct. 5: Kamala Harris Joins 'Call Her Daddy' in a Zip-Up

Kamala Harris visited one of media's most popular podcasts in a relatively casual outfit.

Kamala Harris sat down for an interview with Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper, which went live on Oct. 6. The Vice President defended her family and her stances on abortion access in a relatively casual zip-up sweater and slacks. Her outfit, like the interview itself, was an attempt to meet young voters where they were at.

    Sept. 20: Kamala Harris Rallies—With Oprah!—in Purple

Kamala Harris and Oprah Winfrey joined forces at the "Unite for America" virtual rally.

Getting Oprah's endorsement is a big deal in the world of politics: She's a registered Independent and does not often back candidates publicly. This year was an exception. Oprah and Kamala Harris co-hosted the "Unite for America" rally on Sept. 19, and wore coordinating suits to show a united front. Vice President Harris chose a dark eggplant purple, while Oprah chose a dusty orange, pumpkin spice shade. Mirroring one another's wardrobes clearly showed the two were on each other's side—even as Oprah asked tough questions.

Sept. 18: Kamala Harris Wears a Powder-Blue Suit

At the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., Kamala Harris returned to one of her all-time favorite suiting palettes. She chose a powder blue suit with a message. It signals her commitment to the Democratic party (in a take on its unofficial color) and her commitment to personal style (with its mixture of a romantic pussy-bow blouse and strong-shouldered suiting). Her signature fine jewelry also reappeared, in the form of a few gold rings.

September 14: Kamala Harris Wears LaQuan Smith

Harris rarely does full glam, but she pulled out all the stops for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 53rd Annual Legislative Conference Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 14. The Democratic nominee spoke to the rapt audience in a bespoke black sequin gown designed by the emerging Black designer LaQuan Smith. With long sleeves and an asymmetrical neckline, the floor-length dress made Harris shimmer under the stage lights. The vice president also wore a gold sequin button-down designed by Smith to see Beyoncé on tour in Maryland last year.

September 12: Kamala Harris Wears Platform Converse

Following her first debate with Trump, Harris drew upon her vast personal collection of Converse sneakers to create her look for a campaign rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Democratic presidential nominee matched her black suit and Irene Neuwirth double-strand pearl necklace to a pair of platform Chuck Taylor All Stars.

"I love my Chucks, " Harris once explained to Complex during a 2021 interview. "You know, I think it's maybe people don't expect it. But I think it's a statement about who we really are... And I think it just has to do with the fact that we all want to go back to some basic stuff about who we are as a country. Whatever your background, whatever language your grandmother spoke, we all at some point or another had our Chucks."

September 10: Kamala Harris Wears a Black Power Suit

kamala harris debating in a black suit

Kamala Harris wore a black power suit and a white pussy bow blouse with tonal stripes to her first debate against former President Donald Trump. It might seem like a predictable choice, but it struck exactly the right note in contrast with her opponent's cobalt blue suit and bright red tie. Harris accessorized the suit with a purple and silver ring, gold bangle bracelets, pearl stud earrings, and soft brown makeup.

September 7: Kamala Harris Wears a Purple Blazer and Jeans

Harris rarely deviates from a tasteful heel in professional settings. For a campaign stop at Penzeys Spices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 7, though, she swapped her heels out for a pair of burgundy leather loafers with chunky gold hardware from Tod’s, an eggplant-colored wool blazer, and dark wash jeans.

September 4: Kamala Harris Wears Jeans and Converse

    kamala harris clapping in jeans

Harris at a campaign event in North Hampton, New Hampshire on Sept. 4, 2024.

September 4 was a huge day for me personally. Why? Because Kamala Harris finally wore jeans on the campaign trail and looked incredible doing it. For a campaign stop at Throwback Brewery in North Hampton, New Hampshire, the vice president wore a camel blazer, dark wash denim, and black heels to propose a new tax cut to help small business owners.

August 23: Kamala Harris Wears a Navy Chloé Suit

kamala harris in a navy suit at the dnc

Harris accepting her party's nomination on the fourth night of the Democratic National Convention on August 23, 2024.

Harris looked positively presidential in the navy blue powersuit and tonal pinstripe pussy bow blouse she wore to accept her party’s nomination on the fourth night of the DNC. It was another bespoke Chloé creation for another pivotal moment, and the pussybow blouse was an apt choice given its long political history as a symbol of feminist solidarity. Nicely done, Madame VP.

August 19: Kamala Harris Wears a Coconut Brown Suit

kamala harris waving in a tan suit

And just like that, it was the first night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. Harris wore a “coconut brown” suit comprised of a single-breasted jacket, flared trousers, and a white pussybow blouse to deliver a rousing speech to fellow Democrats at the August 19, 2024 event. The look was made to measure for Harris by Chloé creative director Chemena Kamala, but there is a double-breasted edition of the wool jacket, a couple different iterations of the matching pants, and a soft rose version of the same silk blouse available for the rest of us.

Sure, a camel-colored suit might not seem like much of a departure for Harris, but the fit of her flared trousers is noticeably elevated. And for an added wink, many believe the look may have been an homage to the viral tan suit Barack Obama wore during a press conference in 2015.

August 16: Kamala Harris Wears a Bright Blue Suit

kamala harris in a cerulean suit

Harris appearing in Raleigh, North Carolina to discuss her policy platform on August 16, 2024.

On August 16, Harris wore her best and brightest blue suit yet to a speaking engagement in Raleigh, North Carolina. Instead of the pastel blue we’ve seen her sport before, Harris opted for cerulean to deliver her first major policy speech since accepting her party’s nomination.

August 10: Kamala Harris Wears Christopher John Rogers

kamala harris wearing a lilac suit at a rally

Harris loves to wear purple, the punchy color of bipartisanship. Remember the vivid grape-colored Christopher John Rogers dress and jacket she wore to be sworn in as vice president in 2021? Now, amid her 2024 presidential run, Harris is experimenting more and more frequently with lighter, brighter hues, including this lilac suit she wore to a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 10.

August 7: Kamala Harris Wears a White Blazer

With her freshly announced running mate Tim Walz by her side, Harris channeled rich Hamptons aunt energy in a crisp white blazer and beige trousers during a campaign stop in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on August 7.

July 30: Kamala Harris Wears a Powder Blue Suit

kamala harris in a powder blue suit

Harris’s style hot streak continued with the powder blue suit she wore to a campaign rally in Atlanta on July 30, where she was accompanied by rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo along with senator Jon Ossoff, Reverend Raphael Warnock, and former Georgia state representative Stacey Abrams.

Memorably, she wore a similar Michael Kors powder blue suit on her Vogue February 2021 digital cover. Here, Harris accessorized her 2024 take on the look with a white tee, nude pumps, pearl earrings, and her beloved Irene Neuwirth pearl necklace.

July 27: Kamala Harris Wears a Tan Prabal Gurung Suit

kamala harris in a brown suit

Harris returning to Maryland after a campaign fundraiser in Massachusetts on July 27, 2024.

The fashion gods must’ve smiled on July 27 when Harris wore a tan Prabal Gurung suit, white T-shirt, Tiffany chain, and nude pumps to a campaign fundraiser in Massachusetts. The sleeves on that jacket are chef’s kiss, and it’s merely an added bonus that Gurung is an independent designer of color with whom Harris has worked before. Gurung also designed the garnet dress and coat she wore to the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service at the White House in 2021.

July 25: Kamala Harris Wears a Plum Suit

kamala harris in a dark purple suit

Harris speaking at the American Federation of Teachers' 88th National Convention on July 25, 2024.

Unafraid to outfit-repeat, Harris wore her signature Irene Neuwirth gumball pearl necklace to another appearance in Texas on July 25. This time she paired the beloved accessory with a plum-colored suit, black T-shirt, a modest stack of gold bracelets, and a watch to speak at the American Federation of Teachers’ national convention.

July 24: Kamala Harris Pairs a Cream Suit and Gold Jewelry

kamala harris in a cream-colored suit

Harris after a briefing in Texas on July 24, 2024.

For a trip to meet with local leaders in Houston, Texas on July 24, Harris selected a cream suit, champagne-colored top, and the chunky Tiffany yellow gold link chain she’d later be criticized for wearing, after a group of disgruntled men discovered it costs $62,000. Of course, those of us who follow celebrity fashion know that brands regularly loan expensive jewelry to stylists and their high-profile clientele for press tours and shoots.

July 23: Kamala Harris Wears Navy and Pearls

kamala harris deplaning in a navy suit

Harris exiting Air Force Two at the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport on July 23, 2024.

Pearls popped up again in her wardrobe the following day, this time in the form of an Irene Neuwirth pearl link necklace Harris wore to a campaign rally in West Allis, Wisconsin on July 23. You might recognize it as the same double-strand necklace Harris wore in her official White House portrait, so the piece is likely part of Harris’s personal collection. In Wisconsin, she layered the piece over a black t-shirt and a navy blue suit—an outfit formula she seems to like for rallies.

July 22: Vice President Kamala Harris Wears a Cropped Black Suit

Kamala Harris in a grey blouse

Kamala Harris honoring NCAA championship teams on the South Lawn of the White House on July 22, 2024.

Our first glimpse of Harris in campaign trail mode happened on July 22, the day after President Joe Biden pulled out of the race. Harris was photographed on the White House South Lawn at an event honoring college athletes. Clad in a cropped black suit, a cloud gray cowl-neck blouse, and black pumps, the vice president’s look all but declared: “It’s time to get down to business.” Look a bit closer, though, and you might spot a personal touch hiding in plain sight: her pearl earrings. They're a subtle but important nod to Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the sorority Harris spent her formative years participating in at Howard University. To this day, the vice president continues to showcase her AKA pride on the campaign trail through her jewelry.

Editor's note: This post was updated on Oct. 24 to reflect additional outfit credits and the nature of Kamala Harris's outfit for her Atlanta rally. She was wearing her coconut blazer and jeans, not her full suit.
