If you have lifeless, pin-straight strands, then you know my struggle: I spend 30 minutes creating the perfect curls, only for them to fall flat before you leave the house or the second the wind blows. But after discovering sea salt sprays, I’ve found they’re one of the easiest ways to add texture and hold. The right formulas give my natural hair effortless volume and those post-beach-day mermaid waves that actually last—no curling iron, waver, or entire can of hairspray required.

So what exactly makes these sprays so effective? “Sea salt sprays are designed to mimic the look and feel of beachy, tousled hair,” explains celebrity hair stylist and Laced Hair Extensions founder and CEO, Lacy Gadegaard-West. “They work by depositing salt onto the hair, which roughs up the cuticle slightly and absorbs excess oil to create piece-y, defined waves without needing any heat.”

While you may be eager to get your hands on a bottle just in time for summer, not all sea salt sprays are created equal. According to Gadegaard-West, the best formulas strike a careful balance between texture and hydration. “Salt is naturally drying, so you want a spray that pairs it with conditioning ingredients,” she says. Look for hydrators like aloe vera, glycerin, and coconut water, as well as nourishing oils such as argan and jojoba, which help keep strands soft and healthy without the crunchy, straw-like feel some formulas are known for.

And because summer is in full swing and it's basically the season of the mermaid, keep reading for the 10 best beach-in-a-bottle sea salt sprays that I’ll be spritzing on my hair for Aquamarine-level waves.

    Ballin’ on a Budget

Good hair days shouldn't break the bank. The two sea salt sprays below may cost $15 or less, but deliver results worthy of a much higher price tag.
