A good book can whisk you away to a different time, far-off places, and even inside someone else’s head. And if that person’s perspective is clouded by bad judgment, warped by invisible forces, and/or downright unreliable, you've hit the jackpot: That's a psychological thriller just waiting to be unraveled.

Though there’s quite a bit of overlap between mystery thrillers, suspense novels, and psychological thrillers—which typically revolve around some mysterious event or circumstance—the latter is usually defined less by the mystery and more by the inner instability, fear, turmoil, or paranoia experienced by the characters. That makes for incredibly gripping, twisty, and often unsettling stories where you simply can’t trust anything you read until you’ve made it all the way through. So, consider it an absolutely perfect genre to explore as spooky season approaches.

Here, we’ve rounded up some of the very best psychological thriller books out there, from all-time classics (Gone Girl, anyone?) to newer offerings that have already shaken us to the core. Enjoy the ride, and remember: Trust no one.

Classic Psychological Thriller Books Worth Reading

Before I Go to Sleep: a Novel

'Before I Go to Sleep' by S.J. Watson
    $19$12
    $18.99 AT AMAZON

Every morning, Christine wakes up with no memories and a man next to her in bed who claims to be her husband. As time goes on and she pieces together snippets of her past life and current circumstances, she begins discovering inconsistencies that point to a more disturbing reality than she realized.

    Gone Girl

    'Gone Girl' by Gillian Flynn
    $19$11
    $19 AT AMAZON

If time travel ever becomes real, I’m going straight back to read this book (and feminist favorite) for the first time again. It starts with a woman going missing from her idyllic suburban life, with all the evidence seemingly pointing straight at her husband. From there, the tangled web of lies, high drama, and deceit keeps unraveling.

In the Woods: a Novel (dublin Murder Squad)

'In the Woods' by Tana French
    $19$9
    $19 AT AMAZON

On the surface, this 2007 novel seems like a standard whodunit, kicking off with a pair of police detectives investigating the murder of a young girl in an Irish forest. But it soon becomes much more complicated, as one of the detectives' own childhood friends disappeared in those same woods decades ago, and he becomes increasingly haunted by his memories—or lack thereof—while unraveling the case.

    Shutter Island: a Novel

    'Shutter Island' by Dennis Lehane
    $20$15
    $19.99 AT AMAZON

In the mid-1950s, a U.S. Marshal and his partner arrive at a psychiatric hospital to investigate a patient’s disappearance, but find themselves falling down a creepy rabbit hole of purported mind control and illicit drug trials. No spoilers, but let’s just say everything is not as it seems.

    The Silent Patient

'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides
    $29$13
    $28.99 AT AMAZON

Famous painter Alicia Berenson hasn’t spoken a word since she killed her husband and was locked up in a high-security forensic facility. However, criminal psychotherapist Theo Faber (and our narrator) is determined to get her to open up...while simultaneously detangling his own recent actions.

    The Talented Mr. Ripley

'The Talented Mr. Ripley' by Patricia Highsmith
    $17$10
    $16.95 AT AMAZON

Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel remains a classic of the psychological thriller genre for a reason. Decades later, it still envelops readers in the titular con man’s unnerving psyche, pulling you into his web of lies and along for the ride as he does just about anything—and becomes just about anyone—in pursuit of a higher-class life.

You: a Novel (the You Series)

    'You' by Caroline Kepnes
    $20$15
    $20 AT AMAZON

The basis for the hit Netflix series of the same name, this 2014 novel takes readers inside the mind of intelligent, funny, hopeless romantic Joe...who also happens to be a murderous stalker who will do whatever it takes to be with the woman he’s obsessed with. Pro tip: The book is written in the second person from Joe’s POV, so for an exponentially creepier, more immersive reading experience, listen to the audiobook.

New Psychological Thriller Books Worth Reading

Count My Lies: a Gma Book Club Pick!

'Count My Lies' by Sophie Stava
    $29$14
    $28.99 AT AMAZON

This story starts with Sloane Caraway signing on as the nanny for the wealthy couple, Jay and Violet Lockhart, and soon becoming irrevocably enmeshed in their lives. But Sloane is a pathological liar, making her a completely untrustworthy narrator—and that’s just the tip of the very twisty iceberg that is this unputdownable novel.

    Daisy Darker: a Novel

    'Daisy Darker' by Alice Feeney
    $12
    $11.99 AT AMAZON

Another psychological thriller posing as a classic murder mystery, this 2022 best-seller is a locked-room mystery, as members of Daisy Darker’s family begin dying one by one while they’re gathered on a remote island. But there’s more to Daisy’s story, as Darker family secrets threaten to resurface years after a horrific event.

    A Good Person

'A Good Person' by Kirsten King
    $15
    $14.99 AT AMAZON

The title of this book is very much tongue-in-cheek, as our narcissistic, maybe sociopathic narrator Lillian is really anything but. One of my personal favorite novels of 2026, it follows Lillian as she attempts to piece together the cloudy circumstances of her ex-situationship’s untimely demise, including whether she was involved. Inevitably, she makes reliably makes shockingly, hilariously awful decisions at practically every turn.

    The Housemaid

    'The Housemaid' by Freida McFadden
    $19$11
    $18.99 AT AMAZON

In this 2022 #BookTok runaway hit, after Millie takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Winchester family, she’s constantly unnerved by erratic Nina and irresistibly attracted to even-keeled Andrew. But the dysfunction in that house might be deeper than Nina’s unpredictable cruelty.

One of Us Knows: a Thriller

'One of Us Knows' by Alyssa Cole
    $19$8
    $18.99 AT AMAZON

Years into her career as a writer of contemporary romance and historical fiction, Alyssa Cole waded into psychological thrillers with the excellent (and excellently eerie) When No One Is Watching. She dove even deeper into the genre with this 2024 novel, in which a woman whose career has been derailed by a dissociative identity disorder diagnosis finds herself trapped on an island with a group of strangers. When someone from Kenetria’s past winds up dead, she’s the prime suspect, forcing her and her alters to come together to figure out what’s really going on.

We Used to Live Here: a Novel

'We Used to Live Here' by Marcus Kliewer
    $29$27
    $28.99 AT AMAZON

This horror-tinged thriller starts innocently enough: A family arrives at Eve’s door, claiming their patriarch grew up there and asking to look around. When they won’t leave, however, things take a turn for the creepy, with Eve trapped in a truly nightmarish situation that only gets more terrifying and confusing as time goes on. And if you don’t want the confusion to end, an entire Reddit community is dedicated to decoding the novel and its broader universe, spurred on by additional content from Kliewer himself.
