As someone whose footwear collection is rooted in simplicity, I love nothing more than a pair of mules. Defined by an effortless slip-on silhouette, these streamlined shoes make my heart sing in ways that lace-up sneakers and zip-up boots simply can’t. Although I rely on mules practically all year, I look forward to wearing them most during the fall—sliding into the fall footwear trend is low lift but high-impact.

For guidance, I’ve called on Nordstrom Associate Fashion Director Linda Cui Zhang, who just so happens to know all about the most prominent mule trends on the market. “As we transition into brisk weather, it seems as though designers are embracing both elevated and casual variations,” she tells me. “For example, during the Fall 2024 Ready-to-Wear fashion shows, Chloé showcased chic wooden platforms while Miu Miu championed logo-embossed slippers.”

Beyond the runways, other trending mule styles deserve just as much attention. Brands like Jeffrey Campbell and Vince Camuto offer heeled versions with a sophisticated twist. Meanwhile, Madewell and Tony Bianco seem to favor mules inspired by dainty ballet flats. The backless loafers-style mules reign supreme at Rag Bone and G.H. Bass.

Zhang shares that whichever pair you decide on, you’ll be wearing them more often than not. "The versatility of mules makes them ideal for a range of occasions, whether you’re heading into the office or stepping out for a cocktail,” she says.

Keep scrolling for a categorized edit of easygoing mules that will fit all your styling needs this season.

    Heeled Mules

“A heeled mule is the perfect way to add a hint of polish to any ensemble,” says Zhang. If you want to take the kitten-heel approach, Manolo Blahnik, Staud, Black Suede Studio, and Jeffrey Campbell offer ladylike mules that convey a prim and proper message. If you want a bit of height, styles from Vince Camuto and Bernardo are equipped with block heels that take things to the next level. Enhance your look even further with a refined fall dress or a floor-sweeping maxi skirt paired with a cozy cashmere cardigan.

    Loafer Mules

According to Zhang, your rotation of fall work outfits isn’t complete without a pair of loafer mules. “These backless shoes strike the perfect balance between style and comfort,” she says. When you want to give your power pumps a rest, try out the corporate-approved selection below. 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rag Bone, and G.H. Bass lean into straightforward designs while Reiss, Miu Miu, and Tory Burch endorse shimmering embellishments by way of metal hardware. Team any of these slip-ons with a sleek blazer, a crisp button-down shirt, and sharp tailored trousers, and you’ll receive extra compliments from your coworkers.

    Platform Mules

Chloé, Gabriela Hearst, and Veronica Beard highlight ‘70s-coded wooden clogs within their latest footwear collections. “These retro platforms offer both a boost of height and confidence,” notes Zhang. If wooden shoes aren’t quite your thing, consider alternatives from Larroude, Pelle Moda, and Melissa (which still flaunts the same sky-high appeal). Allow these stompers to take center stage by teaming them with pared-down separates.

    Flat Mules

“Flat mules with feminine details are rising in popularity this fall,” shares Zhang. Jenni Kayne and Vince offer smart, streamlined options, while mules from Madewell, Tony Bianco, DKNY, and Jacquemus offer dainty bows and charming straps. “Often, I’ll wear this style with either a pair of laid-back boyfriend jeans or an upscale cocktail dress—you can truly go both ways,” says Zhang.

    Slipper Mules

When temperatures are too frigid to bear, seek solace indoors while wearing a pair of snug slipper mules. Slides from UGG. ROAM and Sorel are crafted with plush shearling that makes you feel like you’re walking on fluffy clouds. Birkenstock and Rothy's deliver similar comfort with cozy, cushioned footbeds. And if you’re in the market for a pair of slippers that cosplay as going-out shoes, Zhang suggests JW Anderson’s mules: “These slides add a touch of class with glossy leather and tassel adornments.”
