Ask me to describe my favorite season, and I’ll quickly tell you it’s fall. There’s an unmatched sense of joy that comes along with all of the quintessential autumn activities, like sipping on a tangy pumpkin spice latte while listening to the melody of leaves rustling in the breeze. But what I love most about the season is dressing for it, which is why I’m eager to wax poetic about the best fall work outfits.

Unlike putting together a nine-to-five look during summer—which can feel stifling with the heat—cooler temperatures in the fall invite a host of fresh styling options. Whether you throw a boxy blazer over a button-down shirt, pull a cozy cashmere cardigan on top of a fitted tank top, or wear a pair of stockings underneath a floor-sweeping maxi skirt, there are endless sartorial layering paths to traverse.

With that in mind, I’ve created a roundup of 12 fall work outfits to enhance your corporate wardrobe. Ahead, you’ll find a variety of looks that are suitable for any type of office dress code. If your workplace has a more formal policy, consider a sharp suit teamed with a flattering blouse. Or maybe your boss welcomes the idea of casual Fridays—if that’s the case, look no further than straight-leg jeans and a tailored jacket to round out your laid-back look.

Below, you’ll find everything you need. To make things even more appealing, I’ve ensured that no outfit exceeds $500.

    Suit Up

woman wearing suit and button-down shirt

For a boost of confidence, step into a straightforward suit that will give you a bold edge.

When in doubt, you can always depend on a classic power suit to get the job done. This sophisticated style has stood the test of time, and it will remain in your wardrobe for many seasons to come. Above all though, this outfit is beyond easy to assemble. Simply tuck a crisp button-down into a pair of tailored trousers, cover your shoulders with a coordinating blazer, and finish things off with black accessories.

    Conquer Your Commute

woman wearing dress and short-sleeved blazer

If you plan to be on your feet for hours on end, skip the heels and choose a pair of ballet flats.

As someone who travels to work every morning on foot, I tend to avoid sky-high platform heels. Instead, I opt for cushioned ballet flats that make schlepping through the busy streets of Manhattan a bit more bearable. Inspired by the sophisticated city dweller pictured above, I’ll dress up my flats with a luxe black midi dress, a short-sleeved blazer, and hints of gold jewelry. If comfort ranks high on your style agenda, I’d suggest you follow suit, too.

    The Monochrome Memo

Effortless and effective, the monochrome styling hack will never disappoint.

Allow me to let you in on a little fashion secret—dressing in one color is a low-lift way to instantly level up your look. You could try a neutral shade, but if you’re not afraid to make a statement, lean into burgundy. Not only is this deep hue undeniably captivating, but it’s also one of the viral color trends of fall 2024.

    Embrace Sweater Weather

    woman wearing sweater and skirt

Invest in a snug sweater, and your fall work wardrobe will thank you.

The time has finally come to bundle up in a fuzzy sweater. For work, elevate your comfy layer with a structured maxi skirt, a pair of glossy mules, and a leather tote bag that’s spacious enough for all your in-office belongings. Pro styling tip: Get on board with the double belt trend and cinch your sweater for a sculpted look.

For those who have a packed post-work schedule, you’ll need an outfit that can handle a double shift. Slip on a versatile work dress and a blazer that you can easily take from your desk to drinks (or dinner). Before leaving the office, swap your laptop bag with a smaller shoulder bag and accessorize your look with sleek sunglasses and pointy kitten heels.

    The In-Between Temps

woman wearing tank top and skirt

Don’t let transitional weather catch you off guard. Prep your wardrobe accordingly with lightweight pieces that still offer coverage.

It’s not rare to experience bouts of sweltering temperatures during the fall season. Beat the heat in a breathable work outfit that won’t cause you to break a sweat. A sophisticated tank top tucked into a flowy maxi skirt will fit the bill. Keep things cool with a pair of slingback heels that boast an open silhouette.

    Fall’s Favorite Color

woman wearing suit and button-down shirt

From bronze to mahogany, shades of brown are essential for your fall wardrobe.

While creating your collection of fall work outfits, you’ll want to prioritize warm, earthy colors. Go for a chocolate brown suit and pair it with a top that creates a bit of contrast, like a baby blue button-up shirt. If you’re feeling fancy, select a suit jacket stitched with satin fabric.

Anchor a collared top with a tie, climb into a lengthy bubble skirt, and doll yourself up in a cropped jacket. For extra style points, slide into a pair of studded ballet flats.

    Try a Trench

woman wearing trench coat, jeans, and loafers

Whether you’re dressing for the office or not, no fall wardrobe is complete without a staple trench coat.

As simple a trench coat might be, it’s an irrefutable hero item. This trusty piece provides enough warmth for breezy fall days without having the bulky quality of a puffer coat. To brave the brisk weather during your commute, pair a trench with a skin-tight turtleneck and straight-leg pants. Give your look a preppy twist by wearing classy loafers styled alongside white socks.

    Keep It Carefree

woman wearing blazer, button-down shirt, and jeans

Provided that jeans are allowed in your office, look toward this outfit for styling inspiration.

For a casual day in the office, style your relaxed jeans with an easygoing blouse and an extra layer. Looking to give your laid-back outfit a more upscale appeal? Choose a blazer. Aiming to stick with the casual agenda? A knit cardigan will do. Whichever option you choose, add a pair of work sneakers into the mix.

    Take the Direct Route

    woman wearing suit and top

Sometimes the best work outfits are those that are least complicated.

Getting dressed for work in the morning can be a chaotic experience, so why not make things a bit easier by styling a streamlined look? Perhaps the most uninvolved outfit formula consists of a black suit and a white top. It’s polished and doesn’t require any overthinking. You could always spice things up with a colorful bag if this look is a bit too pared-down for your taste.

    Sharpen Your Look

woman wearing blazer, t-shirt, and skirt

Once you discover how easy this outfit is, you’ll find yourself wearing it on repeat.

Searching for a sure-fire way to refine your work outfit? I’ve got two words for you: pencil skirt. This slim-fitting style is a standard workwear must-have that will match with practically any top. For a straightforward look that is guaranteed to succeed, pair your skirt with a basic white T-shirt, a slightly oversized blazer, comfortable flats, and chunky hoop earrings.
