17 Black-Led LGBTQ+ Services and Groups You Can Support Right Now
Help create a safe space for everyone.
We've signed petitions, marched alongside members of our community, and demanded justice for those we've lost, but we must continue to ask: What else can we do as allies to support the Black community? In addition to reading anti-racism books, watching Black history documentaries, supporting Black-owned businesses, and much more, you can consider donating to organizations who have made changes in their communities and continue to do so.
In honor of Pride Month and in support of Black Lives Matter, here are 17 Black-Led LGBTQ+ services and activist groups you can help support right now through donations. These groups are bringing real change to their communities and across the nation, and they could use your help not just now, but always.
This is by no means a full list of all the amazing Black-led organizations out there, but we'll continually update this page with more, so make sure to bookmark it.
LGBTQ+ Freedom Fund
This organization helps LGBTQ+ people in jail or immigrant detention post their bond to secure release. They're also one of the leading groups when it comes to raising awareness about LGBTQ over-incarceration in our country.
The Transgender District
San Francisco houses the world's first recognized trans district. Their programs work to stabilize and economically empower the trans community by creating a safe and thriving neighborhood lead by trans people for trans people.
Black Trans Femmes In the Arts
If you're looking to support the arts, look no further. Black Trans Femmes in the Arts says its mission is to "connect the community of Black trans women and non-binary femmes in the arts and to build power among ourselves."
Anti-Violence Project
For over 40 years, AVP has pushed to end all forms of violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities. Located in New York, they support survivors through free counseling and other educational events.
SNaPCo
Solutions Not Punishment Co. invests in community support for the empowerment of Black trans and queer people of Atlanta. Their work includes seeking to end the mass incarceration of Black trans women and the larger Black community through keeping their local governments accountable.
Black Trans Travel Fund
In order to ensure the safety of Black trans women when traveling, the Black Trans Travel Fund raises money and provides safe transportation so they can travel without fear.
The Audre Lorde Project
Since 1994, this organization has offered a safe community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and gender non-conforming people of color in the New York City area. Programs offered range from support groups to community-based anti-violence programs.
Marsha P. Johnson Institue
In honor of the activist and drag queen Marsha P. Johnson, this organization focuses on protecting and defending the human rights of Black transgender people. They also provide fellowships to help supply income for transgender artists as well as ones to support community-driven projects in the Midwest and South.
TGI Justice Project
Located in San Francisco, the Transgender Gender-Variant Intersex Justice Project provides legal services for transgender and gender-variant/non-conforming people in California prisons, jails, and detention centers. They also help connect those who have recently re-entered society with housing and health services.
Voix Noire
This woman-run organization focuses on providing aid to Black women, their families, and other marginalized groups all over the country. Since March 29, they've given over $26,000 in relief efforts to those affected by COVID-19.
Brave Space Alliance
Over on the South Side of Chicago, Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center of its kind in the area. They typically host support groups and partnering with local organizations to provide free produce to its members, and they're currently providing COVID-19 testing.
Trans Women of Color Collective
This organization makes sure that trans people of color are the ones who get to tell their stories and aren't silenced. Trans Women of Color Collective creates a safe space for individuals to come and be unapologetically themselves with a community that overwhelmingly supports them.
The Okra Project
The Okra Project provide home-cooked meals cooked by Black trans chefs, teaches its recipients to cook, and provides other resources to Black trans people who are experiencing food insecurity.
Black AIDS Institute
Since 1999, this organization has worked to end the Black AIDS epidemic in affected communities across the country through advocacy and learning opportunities.
House of GG
Founded by Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, who was present during the Stonewall riots, House of GG is a safe and transformative space for southern communities of trans women of color.
Trans Justice Funding Project
This community-led funding initiative provides grants to support grassroots trans justice groups run by and for trans people. According to their website, over the last seven years, they've given away 903 grants valuing more than $2.7 million.
A New Way of Life
Since 1998, this organization has provided housing, case management, legal services, and other resources to women recently released from prison.
